The iron nuggets are going to be really useful. If you smelt them again, they turn into wrought iron nuggets which you can compress into wrought iron ingots. They are used in certain places, but I use them for tools because they have a lot higher durability.

Definitely stick 1 lapis on your pickaxe, the fortune level will level up as you mine. Fortune is good for small silver ore. Also you can repair and modify tools with just the tinkers crafting table. Bronze is the best tool material until alumite.

I usually do some drawers for cobblestone and dirt. Less space and more stacks FTW!

About smelting some crushed dust to 10 nuggets - its intentional for basic low-tier ores, you losing some valuable byproducts (like cobaltite) accessible by further processing otherwise (and they are much more valuable than basic ore) so it's kinda balancing you being upset by losing possibility to get it when smelting in the begining. It's old original GT thing nooone bothered to rebalance.

There is also a toughness modifier for tinkers, making your tools unbreakable, eventually

the ore veins in GTNH are build up in a few random rolls, and i only have surface level understanding. Basicly, every other chunk has a ore vein rolled when generated. it rolls type, this dictates the possible brackets for height and width the height is the center block, the ore vein will span 4 up and 4 down from that the width is rolled for all 4 directions ( some of those brackets can roll 24+, creating ore veins to reach into neighbouring ore chunks) then the distribution is done by rolling a chance based on distance from the center, creating a spherical feel again, surface level knowledge, please correct me on things i got wrong on this.
