Everyone and their daddies had a crush on Phoebe Cates in the 80s. It was crazy. She infected all of us like it was Cates Covid. About carolers, we had them in my neighborhood. I didn't want to open the door but my little niece who could barely reach the doorknob at the time did. So she opened it for them. And listened for a bit not knowing what to make of it. Before promptly closing the door on them mid-verse.

I think Ms. Cates caught a lot of attention from her first film, "Paradise," because she was willing to play some of it in just her skin. Later she sad she regretted making that choice, and I don't blame her, but it sure got her a lot of attention, despite the fact the movie wasn't much good.

Something I never realized until Joe Dante told me in the DVD commentary: They never disposed of the gremlin at the school. They had a scene filmed, but when they put the film together, they couldn't work out where to put it (because there's the phone call from Billy that triggers him to run home, and the scene would've come after that, but they needed Billy to get home faster).
@samtaholo20 күн бұрын
I think it's safe to assume that the school gremlin ended up in the cinema with the others.
@shainewhite27812 жыл бұрын
This movie is so cute and funny and also very scary! The original script was a lot darker and more violent than the movie itself: Billy's mom was going to be decapitated by the Gremlins and they were going to throw her severed head down the stairs after Billy comes home. The gremlins were also going to attack a McDonald's restaurant but instead of eating the hamburgers, they were going to kill and eat the customers. The ending was a lot different as it involved Gizmo turning into a Gremlin in order to stop Stripe, but Spielberg rejected this version of the ending and instead have Gizmo be the hero at the end.
@andrewft312 жыл бұрын
Gizmo turning into a Gremlin wouldn’t fit his nature though since he rejected it most of the movie. He is suppose to be the oddity of their species, the others are how they usually behave, Gizmo is the black sheep of the species so to speak. So him turning into a gremlin wouldn’t make sense.

Gremlins was filmed on the Town Square set, on Universal Studios backlot. The same set featured in To Kill A Mockingbird, It’s A Wonderful Life & Back To The Future. Also, the cinema the gremlins gather in, is the same cinema that Marty crashes the DeLorean into when he returns to 1985. Yes, it is the Time Machine from the George Pal production….& there’s also Robbie the Robot from The Forbidden Planet.

Fun little fact this movie and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom were the reason why PG-13 was made, and the fact that the movie was actually supposed to be way darker the mom was supposed to die (death by decapitation and her head chucked down the stairs)as well as the dog, and it was actually a split personality between stripe and Gizmo
@jonadabtheunsightly5 ай бұрын
The PG-13 rating was invented principally because of parental backlash over Goonies (which almost everyone felt should have been R, by the standards of the day, but was rated PG because the ratings board apparently watched the first 30 minutes of the movie with the sound muted, or something).

Fun facts about the movie: The Gremlins were animatronic, and cost over $30,000 each. Security searched people's cars every day to make sure they weren't stolen. The original idea was to use stop motion animation for the gremlins. Special effects wizard Chris Walas wanted to use puppets. Someone at Warner Brothers thought it would be a good idea to use spider monkeys dressed in gremlin costumes. They tested this in director Joe Dante's office, and it didn't go well. For some reason, the test monkey didn't like being dressed as a gremlin, and it went nuts, destroying Dante's office. After the animal trainer got the monkey back under control, Walas said, "So, puppets?" When Warner Brothers received the first cut of the movie, they sent a note to Steven Spielberg and director Joe Dante complaining there were too many gremlins. Spielberg suggested cutting them all out and renaming the movie to "People." At least one of Phoebe Cates' screams was real. In one scene, a big cockroach crawled out in front of her, and they used her reaction in the movie. Gremlins and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom inspired the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. These two movies were too violent for PG, but not enough for R. The original script was very violent, but Joe Dante and Steven Spielberg wanted to make it family friendly, so they changed the more violent scenes. Contrary to popular belief, there is no secret R-rated version of this movie. Near the beginning of the movie you can see a wrecked AMC Gremlin (back then, "AMC" stood for "American Motors Corporation," not "American Movie Classics.") These cars are scarce and collectible today, and are now seen as the beginning of the end for AMC. The company renamed itself "Jeep Eagle Corporation" in 1988, and merged with Chrysler in 1990, six years after the release of this movie. The dog's reaction on seeing Gizmo for the first time was genuine. It was truly startled by the appearance of the puppet. Keye Luke was 78 years old when filming began, but he looked so good they had to rely on makeup to make him look old.

There was a line of toys called "Furbies" that were furr-covered electronic devices that could 'hear' sounds, and respond with 'singing' (a high-pitched trilling chirp). Though ostensibly birds, they bore a strong resemblance to Mogwai in their size and facial features, which would move when they sang.

Loved this film since I saw it in '84. It used the same Universal backlot set as "Back to the Future". Joe Dante, the director, likes to put nods to, and in-jokes of other films onto his. You did notice the time machine from the classic film, Also, the big robot in that scene is Robby from the film "Forbidden Planet". That is just a few of the easter eggs in the movie. The sequel is also fun, a lot crazier and not as dark. Dante also directed another sci-fi/adventure/comedy in the '80's called "Innerspace" that is worth a watch as well.

An all time classic and one of my favorite movies. Not to mention the movie that introduced me to Phoebe Cates who I've had a crush on for over 20 years now. Hey Jen, I remember the day that I rented "Gremlins" from a local video store (those small local rental places that existed long before Blockbuster Video and Netflix). It was in the wintertime of 1984, half a year after the film came out in theaters. The film is considered a black comedy or a horror comedy as we refer to them nowadays. "Gremlins" was produced at a time when combining horror and comedy was becoming increasingly popular, such as "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and " The Evil Dead" films. You might not be aware of this tidbit but the notion of gremlins was first conceived during the 1920s when mechanical failures in RAF (Royal Air Force) aircraft were jokingly blamed on the small monsters. A Bugs Bunny cartoon, "Falling Hare" (1943), has Bugs battling a gremlin on an airplane. Director Joe Dante had read a book titled "The Gremlins" (also in 1943) and said that the book was of some influence on his film. Gizmo was definitely a huge hit with people (especially women) who wanted one of their own. They are adorably cute. It is definitely a Christmas-themed film and many people enjoy watching it during the holiday season. The sequel is definitely "different" and you will get mixed reviews from commenters below. The tone of "Gremlins" was considered to be a bit dark so the sequel is very lighthearted and outrageously comedic. I'll leave it up to you (or your commenters) to see if you'd do a reaction to it. I'm not sure if you were aware but at the very end of the closing credits, once the theme has ended, you can hear the sounds of gremlins laughing. This is to say that some gremlins may have survived to lead the film in having a sequel. 📽❤️

"those small local rental places that existed long before Blockbuster Video and Netflix" the apropriate term is Mom and Pop movie Rentals. and yeah till about 89" those were the bread and butter of movie rentals . in the 90's big cahins swooped in to try and be the "walmart" of movie rentals (namely blockbuster) and well we see how that went for them in the end.

indiana jones yes, gremlins no. the PG-13 rating , came out on june 1st 1984 , gremlins released june 8th 1984. however spielberg wanted gremlins to slot in at pg-13 . but the movie didn't cause the rating to be created. more impactful to the rating's creation was the home VCR and a slew of 1970's movies like Porky's or animal house , that had previously been rated PG , despite being filled with drug/alcohol use and brief nudity of variious degrees. the rating allowed them to re-classify the VHS releases of those movies so that young kids wouldnt have "direct" access to them.

fun facts. mogwai is a chinese word for demon, or devil . the genius of this movie is so in your face but so few people (today) catch it because the ww2 stories of gremlins is distant . but the father is an inventor of inventions that always break down after a short time , he then gives his son a present that kinda "breaks down", by birthing creatures whose myths suggest they were the cause of ww2 machines breaking down. the 2nd movie continues this theme by taking place in a high tech building that is also always having break downs. furbies were influenced by gizmo. they actually had a line of gremlin stuffed animals in the 80's. i had both gizmo and the gremlin version of stripe. i lost them to a house fire in 1993.

Hes also a walking movie encyclopedia like Tarintino, so he puts references to tons of movies in his films. I saw this movie over 10 times in the theater in 84. 2:40 - Doctor Moreau is a character in the H.G. Wells novel The Island of Doctor Moreau, where the doctor creates animal-human hybrids to disasterous effect. It's been adapted into at least three movies. 10:00 - I can only remember carolers coming around once, many years ago. Maybe it happens more in small towns, or more tight-knit communities. 12:24 - Most reactors cut out the father's phone call from the convention, and the time machine (from the 1960 movie) in the background. Also the robot that's walking around and standing behind him, is Robby the Robot from the movie Forbidden Planet (1956). He's appeared in movies, many TV shows and even commercials. If you have a spare $20,000 (give or take) you can buy a full-sized, official replica. As for Gizmo, there are stuffed versions that you can buy, and back when Furbies were big, they made a Gizmo Furbie. You can find them on eBay. There IS a sequel, but it's really silly. Before the days of cable television, Christmas caroling was very common in our neighborhoods. Kids could make a few bucks spreading Christmas cheer. And if you were a kid that couldn't sing, like me, you could go around and shovel peoples sidewalks and driveways. Many would gladly pay a buck to get their property shoveled. Beats getting into trouble with boredom. Fun times.

"Billy’s mom is officially a better fighter than he is." To paraphrase another movie character, "Nobody beats her in the kitchen!" 😉 IIRC Phoebe Cates (*drool*) thought the dad monologue was a joke, or that they were pranking her. She delivered it so well though 😅

In Gremlins on his way to work William says hello to Dr. Moreau who just happens to be the towns veterinarian. In the movie 'The Island of Doctor Moreau', Doctor Moreau is a mad scientist who creates human like hybrid beings from animals. Making him a Mad Veterinarian, if you will.

I recently introduced my 9y.o. son, Kenzie, to _'Gremlins'_ and _'Gremlins 2: The New Batch'._ Just like you, he instantly fell in love with *Gizmo,* so I bought him a *Gizmo Plushie* 🧸🥰❤️ Bless his heart, Kenzie actually won’t bring the plushie into the living-room after sunset, "because the light would hurt him!" 😄 He hides *Gizmo* under his quilt, in his bedroom, in the evening, for the same reason; it’s truly adorable! 🥰❤️ *P.S. -* You, Jen, are most _definitely_ a *_DAME!_* 😍

"Is that a crossbow?! Is that a chainsaw?!!" Spike's escalation as he beats down Billy is hilarious! When he pulls out the pistol 🤣🤣🤣 It's such an American Christmas!

Glad you saw E.T. first. Gizmo was before elmo, it was a predecessor in the must have Christmas gift.

Wizard of Oz was "I'll get you my pretty, and your little dog too" but I think this was referencing that line.

You are correct Gizmo is a puppet, they had the small one for far away shots and then for those more detailed close ups they built much bigger models

Seeing this brings back memories of my 7-year-old self seeing it in the theater in 1984. Some great films came out that year. This was definitely one of them! Great reaction. Merry Christmas!!

Completely off-topic, but the mother of the actor playing the dad in this movie (Hoyt Axton), was Mae Axton. She co-wrote Elvis Presley’s first big hit song, Heartbreak Hotel.

Thanks for this reaction! Hoyt Axton (the father) is also the father in "The Black Stallion," a movie that I am confident that you would enjoy.

Classic comedy/horror film. I’d say the horror is really light but it uses the same type of techniques. It just doesn’t have all the gore that normally accompanies the jump scares. I’d say the sequel strays more into comedy, and is almost a parody in the vein of Airplane and Naked Gun with a lot of scenes being bits as opposed to scenes integral to the story.

Enjoyed this reaction. Appreciate your decision to give worst to the old lady, I'd half expected you to give it to the gremlins for the reasons you listed but agree, her threatening the dog was most despicable. Thanks again! 👌

Yes, that’s Corey Feldman in the Christmas tree. The Goonies features a Gremlins reference; when the police are reminding Chunk about all the wild stories he has told them previously, one of them is about little monsters that multiply with water.

Loved your reaction Jen! Yeah, there is a Gremlins 2, and it's awesome! Some say it's better than the first, and I ain't gunna argue with them. It ain't Christmas-y though. so you could watch it anytime. Fun fact: Chris Murphy references G2 in the Sloan song "Someone I Can Be True With" Lol.

Gremlins is a great example of the golden time before cinema died, which happened in 1993. Before then film makers put insane amounts of effort in, after, they didn;'t have to bother. Sure, you still get great movies after 93, but only a scattering. Growing up in the 80s you couldn't catch a break from amazing cinema. We'd go to the cinema without knowing what we were going to see because we'd know you'd be spoiled for choice. It is a kind of magic - genuinely. Magicians work because they put insane levels of work into making you think you're seeing something you're not, and that used to be true for cinema, too. Some of the Gizmo puppets had heads several feet wide so they could get the detail in. They'd have to build giant versions of baskets, and clothes and whatever was in the shot, just so you'd see a Mogwai not a desk sized contraption. At least you get to still have these works of genius - the cathedral hasn't yet destroyed them all.

There was an animated series and in it you find out that the old man, Sam Wing, found Gizmo when he was just a boy, and has taken care of him ever since. I can’t imagine how upset he must have been, after having Gizmo for most of his life, when he realized that Gizmo was gone.

A lot of the trivia stuff I was going to mention didn't make your editing cut, but I'll mention them anyway. The guy who commented on Billy's drawing of Mrs. Deagle as a dragon was the famous illustrator/director Chuck Jones, who did a lot of Looney Tunes (Bugs Bunny, roadrunner, etc.) The two movies shown on the marquee while Billy was running to work were "A Boys Life" and "Watch the Skies" which were the original working titles of E.T. and Closer Encounters, respectively. If you look closely at the scene in the department store where Spike is hiding among the plushy toys, one of the ones he's behind is an E.T. doll, which is especially funny given that E.T. did something similar in his movie. In a scene of the father calling from the convention, the guy riding across in the electric wheelchair was actually Steven Spielberg.

Mrs. Deagle's cats are all named after money. Kopek, Drachma, Rubel, Peso, Dollar Bill.
