Grendel is by far my favorite tale. It has inspired and captivated me in many ways. Glad to see much more videos studying the devil's deeds. We're only scratching the surface of Mr. Wagner's work

Thanks so much for this. Matt Wagner was a huge part of my indie comics journey. My friend in middle school would bring in issues of MAGE and GRENDEL, and I was immediately hooked. We would scrounge through back issue bins at the local comic store to try and fill the holes in our collection, and it opened me up to trying out loads of amazing new books from indie publishers. I have committed to read anything Wagner has a part in ever since.

Grendel Is Really One of Best Comic Exist, Deserves More Attention
@devinphillips97042 ай бұрын
This is a good video, and thank you for making it, it's extremely well done. But I have to take exception to Grendel being described as evil. Matt Wagner has stated in many interviews that Grendel, whether it's Hunter Rose or the just the "spirit" of Grendel as it moves and grows, is not a force of evil, but aggression. Aggression has many violent and evil expressions, to be sure, and it can be argued that more often than not aggression tends to lean in those directions, but it can also have more positive, even more moral, outcomes. Grendel was intended as an exploration of the "shades of gray" of morality, in contrast to Mage's more good vs. evil binary, but because Grendel was in essence a tragic story (or a series of tragic stories, rather), those grays were always going to be pretty dark.

Grendel is my #1 favorite series, so this is right up my alley, and I really enjoyed it. Thanks for all your work on it!

Warchild was my first introduction to the Grendel saga, and the impetus for me to explore this fascinating character and all of the individuals that would follow. Wagner wrote many good stories, although I think Four Devil's, One Hell was exceptionally strong- fleshing out for distinct characters that carried the mantle of Grendel, each in their own unique way, and ultimately standing together to face the looming threat from an unseen quarter. Now I have to go to my collection, find this series, and reread it. Great video & thanks for sharing!

My favorite work by Wagner is Mage, which til today still holds up. Great story, awesome characters, and a new take on an old story.
@rutherfordappraisal2582 ай бұрын
I picked up Warchild issue #1 back near the end of my serious comic reading days and stayed with that series through its completion, even though I had no knowledge of the character’s background or history. It’s one of the comics I’ll still take out to this day and re-read from time to time.

Excellent video. I love Grendel. Hunter Rose was of course a master class in writing a villain, and to me Orion was the hard choices a leader makes. Of course the cyborg is so cool visually, but so lost and tragic. So many other great stories in between. As I grow older the more I appreciate this series and see things I never picked up on as a child.

I watch a lot of comics content e.g. comic tropes, comics explained, cartoon kayfabe (r.i.p. ed), etc. - this video was a stand out. You produced something truly special and I'd love to see more content of this quality. Thank you for your hard work, this was an extremely pleasurable watch 👍

I've followed Grendel since the first issue of the Comico series in 1986, and I'm astonished that he's still world-building in this exciting universe to this day. I hope that definitive collections (even beyond the omnibuses) will be in print indefinitely to show the growing ambition of those on the cutting edge of this medium, and how an individual talent can flourish by riding the creative tide over decades. It's really worthy of any level of dissection and analysis. What a legacy for Matt Wagner as a creator.

Very good but the original backups of Grendel in Mage were in color, not black white and red. They were put together in a graphic novel devil by the deed in color, which I have both hard and soft cover signed by Matt Wagner. The impact with Wagner's black white and red anthologies was shown Over 10 to 15 years later. DC and Marvel started to do their own anthologies of antiheroes and villains using black white and red. Let's not forget also the Grendel series that was canceled before it was put on Netflix... hopefully one day that series will come out.

This was an awesome video, thanks so much. When someone asks me who my favorite is, expecting me to say Batman or something, I say it has always been Grendel since discovering it in the back pages of Mage almost 40 years ago. I even had the plan to invite Matt Wagner to my wedding LOL, but I never did. To this day, I will buy anything with Matt's name on it, especially the new Dracula books. If only Netflix had the balls to release the show they filmed, the world would be a better place!

I like the new Hunter by the Deed Master's Edition he did where he essentially just rewrote and redrew the whole original Hunter Rose story better than the original. I would usually hate the idea of an artist completely remaking his own art but in this case it really worked. He's in his own words learned the economy of words so no more walls of text.

By the way, the crossovers with Batman are canon in the Grendel continuity. The saga "Devil Quest", a collection of backup stories appeared originally in several issues of Grendel Tales, is the prelude of the second Batman/Grendel crossover, with the confrontation of Grendel Prime with the Dark Knight of Gotham City. Regards from Lima, Peru.

There is a very different feel color wise with the Pander brothers art when you look at the original floppies and the Dark Horse collection of it. I much prefer the original floppies' pastel coloring because it fits the era and tone of the story much better than the darker more traditional digital recoloring in the collected edition.

Does Grendel count as an Anti-Villain?
@bufordhighwater98722 ай бұрын
It would really depend on which Grendel. Hunter Rose was without a doubt, a villain. No anti about it. He exhibits symptoms of both Narcissistic and Antisocial Personality Disorders (a high functioning sociopath). He believes that life is a game, the point of which is to dominate all those around for the sheer joy of it. He doesn't love anyone. He has a distaste for certain types of crimes, but not necessarily because he thinks they're immoral. Stacy was both a tragic villain and villain. Christine was a villain, but started off with good intentions. Brian Li-Sung was a tragic villain. Eppy Thatcher was a drug-addled anarchist, and probably an anti hero. Orion Assante was guilty of necessary evils. Various Grendels after Orion's rise and fall were portrayed as flawed heroes and villains. Grendel Prime was lawful neutral. A paladin slaved to his programming.
@allenrubinstein36962 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what an "anti-villain" is, exactly. Grendel is the disembodied spirit of aggression, violence, righteousness, vengence, and the instinct for survival beyond all morality. It's the part of all of us who would like to have poured a vial of poison in Donald Trump's baby formula to prevent the havoc he's visited on our lives. Each individual soul is dead certain (in our fantasies) that we know what is best for the path of humanity, and conceives extreme action to force our species to fulfill its flourishing destiny. Then the consequences come, and nothing arrives as we predicted. Then we start again, still certain we know the answers. That's the cycle of doom and delusion Wagner illustrates over and over again. Really, just read every single chapter. The grand tapestry is so worth the investment.
