The firefighters were faced by a fire for which they had received no training and which was supposed to be impossible. The big mistake on the night came from the people answering the emergency calls with the advice to 'Stay put'. Only today have I learned that the actual full advice is 'Stay put UNLESS AFFECTED BY HEAT AND SMOKE'. So who made the decision to abbreviate it? The blame lies elsewhere, with those who made the decision to clad the building on the cheap, therefore creating the conditions for the fire to happen. I was pleased to hear that the inquiry has already ruled that the building was illegal, those truly responsible for this tragedy should be quaking in their shoes at the prospect of part 2.

it seems very unfair to blame the fire brigade, especially when they undoubtedly worked so hard to extinguish the fire. it sounds like semantics, but they believed they were dealing with a fire in a building, not a building on fire. that cladding should never have been fitted - it shouldn't be legal for it to have been fitted. according to a sky news documentary on here, in scotland it would have been illegal to fit that cladding to high-flats, but england never brought in such a law. years down the line, that cladding's still legal and still fitted to god-knows how many buildings. and we're blaming individual fire-fighters for not saving enough lives.

What we should be doing is blaming the fire brigade as a institution for it's failures that night lack of proper training in regards to highrise fires, lack of proper equipment, failure to enforce fire safety standards and failure to learn from past events among other things as well as the other organisations and companies that have a part in this chain of events, its like blaming the builder they just got paid to build it you need to blame the people in a position to do something about it. How dare these Bastards hang our brave firefighters out to dry, if cheap flammable, untested cladding hadn’t been used, all in the name of saving money, then normal firefighting protocol would have been sufficient, you cannot have a hundred people clambering down flights of dark, smoke filled stairwells, choking to death and falling on top of each other, when firefighters are trying to go up, dragging hoses and other heavy equipment with them, that’s why people are told to stay put, tower blocks where designed to keep residents safe until the section where the fire had taken place, could be extinguished and bought under control, those that brought and had the cladding installed on Grenfell, tower are guilty of murder, not our brave, heroic firefighters, but as usual, the dirty cunts in suits will walk away, having blamed somebody else, they, along with the BBC are despicable beyond belief !

If you separate the cladding issue, as that is not what this part of the report is about, the fire service response was terrible. How can the chief say that she would not have done anything differently? Take some responsibility for the part your department played in not getting people out of there and changing the plan! I live in a 20 floor apartment block in Sydney and we are ALWAYS told to evacuate, no matter what, I don’t know how looking at that fire and the way it spread you could ever tell people to stay, it defies common sense...

So when you have a fire on the 1st floor, you want everyone to be subjected to having to evacuate past the fire. I don't think that is a good idea. Also, in the UK the government as systematically taken away responsibility from firefighters to inspect buildings and shops, so we now have fire wardens who go to the fire scene and report rather than sending out fire engines. All to save money of course. We are the 5th richest country in the world yet we try to cut back our emergency services at every point.

When these tower blocks were built they were designed for a 'stay put policy' during a fire. Trying to evacuate everyone during a fire is difficult. It was the refurbishment that made Grenfell Tower a tinder box. The cladding, pvc window frames and replacement of fire doors with non-fire resistant ones was the fault of the Local Authority and their contractors. Trying to blame the LFB for this is disgraceful.

I would like to stand with LFB captain on what she said: BASED ON THE INFORMATION THAT FIREFIGHTERS HAVE UPON ARRIVAL AT SCENE THEY DID EVERYTHING THEY COULD TO SAVE LIVES. THE TYPE OF INSULATION USED SHOULD NEVER BEEN USED. They wouldn't have any way to know that the building was covered in highly flammable material. They got dispatched to a small fire, got a quick knockdown of this fire, but the exterior was engulfed in a matter of minutes. In a ‘’normal’’ building exposure would be limited to 2-3 floors above and in this case holding back an evacuation makes sense to avoid accidents in the staircases, prioritize people from floors near the fire and keep clear to emergency personnel. The renovation process, certification of the building (with private inspectors) and the lobby of plastic industries that made this type of material legal to use in buildings are the real criminals. This insulation should never be on a building, there are way better and safer alternatives overthere, but not as profitable to some industries/politicians. LFB can learn a lot from what happened and make improvements, but at the moment they couldn't do much more with the information they had.

The fire fighters on the night are NOT being blamed. Everyone, including the Chair of the Inquiry Moore-Blick, acknowledges that firefighters gave their life’s blood that night to save everybody but were defeated by the fire spread via cladding. In fighting this fire using their high-rise procedure, they were trying to do the impossible. But senior fire managers are being castigated for sticking to the “stay put” policy for this building for more than an hour after it was clear that the building was effectively lost. Had they abandoned “stay put” much earlier more lives would have been saved. When they did change approach at 0247 another 32 were saved who would have been dead if “stay put” had continued. Pity they didn’t do it earlier. And these managers are paid enough to take responsibility for their acts and omissions.

@Phil Sophia you are mixing it up with residents and the work place, in areas of residence it is the responsibility of the fire service to help evacuate members in the building and ensure their safety this responsibility also falls on the owners of the building as they should ensure that there are fire exits for people to escape and your presumption that 300 people will be squeezing through the doors is inaccurate as with the fire brigade a perfect system implemented would prevent such a disaster evidently faults are on the company that made the building and the LFB where the chief herself said the stay put policy used was wrong in this situation

In a properly designed building, in most cases, staying put may well be the safer thing to do. With fire doors and sprinkler systems and ventilation systems and so on, the amount of time you can safely stay in place with a fire in another area of the building (like not inside your actual flat) can be quite long, long enough for the fire to be put out. By contrast people opening doors and so on as they try to leave can actually increase airflow to the fire and make it worse, plus people can get hurt on the stairs trying to evacuate. The trouble here is, of course, that Grenfell was not at all a properly fire safe building by modern standards, and pretty much every single element that makes it safe to stay put was defective (like the automatic closers on doors) or simply missing (sprinkler system.) The fix is really to not have buildings so poorly done, and perhaps in the interim have a list of buildings that are not properly fire safe so the emergency services can change their advice for people in those buildings until those buildings are fixed.

I think the only things the fire brigade really did wrong is evidently not adequately preparing for a major building evacuation situation, and then on the night failing to decide in a properly timely manner to change the instruction from stay put to evacuate. The first is on them entirely - it’s not common but in a city like London it is a real possibility that you’ll have to evacuate an entire large building, you should prepare for it. The second it’s easier to understand - the people on the ground that night had no way of knowing that many of the fire safety elements of the building weren’t working properly. Fire doors didn’t close, the ventilation system didn’t work, the windows didn’t keep the fire out as long as they should have, meaning it wasn’t safe for people to stay as long as they could otherwise. So it would take some time to understand that and change your approach. But that goes back to the lack of practice somewhat - they may have had better communication on the night if they’d practiced such a large scale event.

Liability lies with the Manufacturer of the cladding and developers clear and simple. No one else really is to blame. The firefighters were caught off guard as a typical building usually won't spread so quick. Firefighters shouldn't be blamed on evidence and reactions based on hindsight in which the cladding was found to be so volatile. Yes, lessons in better response and organization can always be learnt from this but blame shouldn't be put on the firefighters on the ground unless there was complete negligence.

@Phil Sophia I still feel manufacturers are still the ones to blame (there are the ones that introduced the product). I would say the certification of the product was not robust enough. The certification may be ratings based but I am sure it was not really known that during such a situation that the cladding would be so voilatile. Building control inspectors in their scope ensures the buildings fitness based on product certifications/spec, installation QCs conforming to current building regs/standards. Product wise its very similar towards the treatment of asbestos products in Buildings. It was once deemed appropriate for installation once. Who bared the cost of replacements. I am sure the government took a fair share of the cost as well as building owners. How much liability was actually put on the manufacturers of the asbestos that supplied and introduced the product (which was later deemed illegal and unsafe).

@Phil Sophia it gets even worse, Commanders failed to spot the compartmentation had failed meaning “stay put” policy should be lifted. it's even crazier to know that the inquiry also states that the stay put policy caused more deaths

@Phil Sophia and don't start brining in legislation as some form of defence or justification, no english law holds a major precedent in cases especially when they are constantly changing we have had judges making such modifications and parliament making many reforms that its come to the point that using legislation as a defence is pointless and holds mo weight and no placing responsibility and setting out the public service duty isn't me getting people killed but further ensuring their safety and wellbeing i find it interesting that you focus on them losing their job when the cost is someones life lool, it's people like you why this country falls back the ignorant the ones who can't face such truths and prefer to ignore and defend it as much as they can, it's pathetic and funny most of the time well the truth hurts but it's clear the LFB hold some responsibility and hopefully justice will be served and the victims will find peace

@Phil Sophia actually the stairs were not fit for people to go through around 2:47 am as stated in the inquiry in fact the inquiry themselves found the time you specified was exactly when they should have been cleared and gone had it been 'unsurvivable' why would they reach such a conclusion in fact its all the result of lack of planning and training there were firemen who went in first which was before the fire spread but there was evidence of the stay put policy to be dropped since it was evident in the inquiry that the fire had spread to other compartments, whats your next excuse.

@Phil Sophia no one said it's unusual but its clear as a result of the stay put policy as a result of the chief neglecting the fire fighters telling her to repeal the policy as ppl were getting killed yet she ignored it the statement from the inquiry provides reasonable grounds for liability had there even been an obstruction on those stairs no fire fighter would want the policy repealed and the fact the fire was breaching other compartments on those grounds alone the stay put policy would need to be removed, whats your next excuse
