The teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg has set sail from Plymouth on board an eco-friendly yacht, bound for UN summits on global warming in New York and Chile. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
She admits the voyage will be a 'huge challenge'. The 16-year-old will make the two-week trip across the Atlantic on a zero-carbon racing yacht, which has no kitchen and the toilet? Well, it's a bucket.

Michael18599 I am not against green activism in moderation, and I have a pretty carbon clean lifestyle myself , but the problem they majority have is that they are from the privileged classes , and most of them ( not all) lecture others and call for sacrifices from others that they don’t want to suffer themselves, they have their middle class privileges , where they can afford to travel, and they DO , despite at the same time calling for a Climate Emergency ! What kind of emergency is needed before THEY personally make real life sacrifices? Now I DO have friends that live the life they call for others to lead, and I DO have friends that lead a poor carbon lifestyle, but the latter DON’T lecture like the hypocrites do. The weakness of (the majority of ) these people - in my experience- ( as you have pointed out) is the actuality of their lifestyle does not match their deafening rhetoric . So it’s so EASY to defeat most of them with a couple of questions about THEIR lifestyle. I do recommend it , it is very satisfying to see the hypocrites melt away, with just a mild challenge (, as they know cannot defend their own position. )

The people blaming Greta for the people who owned the boat deciding to fly out and retrieve it are ridiculous. Greta was given a ride on the boat, she has no control what they did with it afterward, for whatever reason they didn't want to wait to take her back. They needed two additional crew members (to essentially replace Greta and I guess her dad) to fly there to bring it back. I think it could have been thought out better but it's not Greta's fault, she merely wanted a ride to the US with the lowest carbon footprint.

There is nothing complicated or nefarious about it except that it has the word "tax" in it, but you have to pay tax for something. Good taxes get rid of things we don't want instead of suppressing (like Income Taxes) the things we DO want. With a Carbon Tax, we could reduce the Income Tax & CO2 at the same time. Not very well thought through, and shows that it's all about getting attention. Me, me, me, me..... And yet there are millions of humans going about their day to day lives, making changes to their lives for the good of the planet and the good of themselves, who never say anything. They just do it.

Ronald Broersma - So what? According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (www.transtats.bts.gov/), a total of 631,939,829 passengers boarded domestic flights in the United States in the year 2010. That averages to 1.73 million passengers flying per day, which I'm sure has gone up in the last nine years. Three people flying or not flying will not make a big impact on that. At least Greta is trying to decrease her own carbon footprint. Have to admire her for that.

The contentious, multiparty, Mexican Senate passed a bill committing the country to a 30% reduction in "greenhouse" gas emissions by 2030 without a single dissenting vote. Will it be done?
