Ummm Dylan...those are not "fake" FilterTrons...they a "real" BroadTrons...Gretsch is very clear on their site that the B'Trons are DIFFERENT than F'Trons...they are not trying to scam anybody by using those toaster top covers...just trying to preserve the Gretsch heritage... And G&B do build some very good pups...just my 2 cents :)

Why do you call them 'fake Filterl'trons? They aren't. They are completely different pickups with a completely different name, Broad'tron. There's nothing fake about them. I listened to a bunch of demos and they are very good humbuckers with very good articulation. Update: I actually bought a Gretsch G5220 with Broad'trons and I LOVE THEM. They are by far the best modern humbuckers I've heard.

Assuming these are the same or similar to the Broadtron pickups on the Streamliner series, I can say that removing half the pole pieces adds lots of definition and makes it sound much closer to a filtertron and less muddy. Worth a go y'all.

Possible video idea: What are the differences between the Gretsch Filtertron variants? They have the Filter'tron, the Full'tron, and the Broad'tron, apparently with slightly different designs to aim for different characteristics. So, it would be interesting to compare the tones on those, dissect them, and learn what makes them different from each other, as well as different from the PAF-style humbucker (which you've already done).. Also the Hilo'Tron and Dynasonic, on the list, but they might already be covered. That relatively recent video on Filtertron differences with a PAF-style humbucker briefly mentioned that the HiLo'Tron was a single coil with a big magnet. And the Dynasonic is a single-coil, so maybe they don't belong in a *Tron video.

What you mentioned at 11:15 about someone commenting on a video having trouble finding drop in replacements for their import Gretsch - The earlier Electromatics (5120s for example) came with 'Vintage Style' tuners with an 8.5mm bushing rather then the 10mm hole that came on later electromatics which were equipped with Grovers. Just a note that Grovers will not be a 'drop in' for all import Gretsch models.

Do you remember if the BT-2s Filtertrons had ceramics or alnico magnets? I've looked online and can't find anything definitive. I know some people say they can be muddy, which to me tends to mean it has ceramics, as well as having higher output. But I don't know.

Great video. I like the way you savagely dissect the pickup. I really think you should change the switch tip to the metal Gretsch version so you can injure your hand if you do the Townsend windmill and miss!. Great info on the pots. I was playing my Electromatic G5220 last night and it has the same crap pots. I like how you and Philip McKnight both justify locking tuners for easy string changes only! I must admit those tall posts on those locking Grovers looks a little weird. I seldom break a string and use a thin pick and long-life Elixirs, so I don't mind taking the time and do a minimal-wrap self-locking string winding technique to stabilize tuning. Fine tuning the nut slots or replacing with a Tusq is what I do always.

I put G&B pickups in my Strat from Stewmac as Golden Age PU's and @6K they're similar to Fender Tex-Mex pickups. They supply a lot of company overseas like my Tradition CAB10 Tele and all I did was swap out the cheap electronics for a premium wiring kit that came with a 4-way switch and those pickups are so on point to me especially the bridge that's P90 hot @8.5K after swapping out the old Alpha pots for CTS 250Ks that sounds way better than before the upgrade... good luck to the winner if it isn't me!😁

I got one of these a couple weeks ago and think these pickups are actually quite good. Better than alnico classic and alnico classic pro i have had in my Epiphones imho. Just removed stock volume pot with resistor and cap and put in a big size alpha B500K pot and put on speed knobs with numbers wich makes it easier to find the right position. I think the pickups clean up quite a bit, maybe not as much as other pickups, but they do clean up and it is a lot easier to adjust that with new pot and knobs. Tuners are better than on the really cheap guitars, but not as good as Grovers found on many Epiphones, but I think they are on par with the kluson style that Epiphone has on many of their guitars. Lot of guitar for the money. Don't think I will do much more with it at this point. Thought of replacing the tuners with Gotoh SG301 as they seem to be a drop in replacement, but not necessary so I'll just keep the stock ones for now.

Question: What are the "Blacktop" Broadtrons and Filtertrons? These show up on the line above the Streamliners, the Electromatics. I imagine that the Blacktop Broadtrons are just like the Streamliner Broadtrons, except with a piece of black plastic in the pickup cover, which is not something I would be interested in. However, I really like the Gretsch Electromatic G5420T and G5422T for the price, and they come with "Blacktop Filtertrons." These are advertised as being modeled after pickups taken out of Baldwin-era Gretsch guitars. So what is this construction? Moreover, what is this tone like?

I'm a big ACDC fan and love Malcolm Young's tone and was going to purchase this guitar, now after I heard it I was like..nah..sounds totally different from what I'm looking for. My question is, I have an EVH 5150 III 50 W 6L6 and use a Gibson Les Paul Studio, is there any way to get that sound on these? Such as changing the pickups? Or do I need a complete equipment change? Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Dylan and keep up the amazing work!! Cheers 👊😎⚡

so how about Fender Fidelitron then? I own one, well it doesn't sounds like filtertron but it just close IMO. Does it a gimmick too?

those are actual filtertron copies. way better than the broadtrons he took out of this gretsch.

Do you use Bourns for push-pulls too? Unless there's something I missed, they're not full size pots, does that change anything?

That thing looks pretty damn slick for a budget variant! Though I find it Kind of strange Gretsch would mess with their own image by putting regular PAF-style humbuckers into their guitars

Some people like humbuckers but still want a Gretsch. Broad'Trons are still Gretsch pickups and aren't PAFs so it's not like they're totally bastardizing their product, image or whatever. And with the different scale length and pickup placement, it's still going to sound completely different than a Les Paul. It's just another option. That's like asking why Gibson would make a Les Paul with PAFs instead of P90s and vice versa.

Real FilterTrons are around 4K with an alnico 5 magnet that’s 1/4” thick..

Hey Dilan, what pickup height you suggest for Broadtrons in hollow body guitar?

I had a Gretsch with the broadtron pickups in it, they are not even close to a filtertron.

There not supposed to be like a filtertron they tried to make it sound inbetween a single coil and a humbucker basically.

That's why they're not called filtertron....and they're not trying to be filtertrons. Very simple.

what is it about the new pickup that will allow volume cleanup the stock pups didn't have?

Way less resistance, less capacitance and a different frequency response

This thing was already nice by my standards, but it is going to be awesome when you are through with it. I'm excited to see the final product. If you are going to put different pots in it anyway what about coil splitting? Nevermind, I just heard you say "push/pull" is going in.

Omg that guitar is a fake Gibson!! Oh it’s not a Gibson. You are a fake Bob Dylan. Oh just a guy named Dylan. Fake Filtertrons,? NOT filtertrons.they sound great. You are doing a huge disservice to people putting them off great pickups.

Was used to seeing you on a patio or in a house what happened. You think Gibson will sue Gretsch over that guitar?
@redielg
@redielg 4 жыл бұрын
gretsch has been making a "jet" style single cut guitar forever, I doubt gibson would sue now. They don't own the single cut shape.
@spottedsaint957

A Telecaster is almost a single cut guitar and Gibson hasn't sued Fender that I know of. Although ,I believe that the Telecaster came out first before the Les Pauls (Juniors or otherwise).

The broadtrons in this are probably not that great as they are in a very cheap guitar. The BT65 Broadtrons in my MIJ PE Jet are however, very nice. You get what you pay for in this instance.
