Gretsch Filtertrons are the classic sound, but they aren’t the only sound. Dynasonics were the original Gretsch sound after all! Which do you prefer? My Tv Jones or Gretsch / De Armond Dynasoncis? I give you a run down of my thoughts then give you 10 minutes of uninterrupted playing, with a good few minutes on each before adding some slap back so you can let your ears sink in!

Adrian, you've verbally summed up and then demonstrated the differences between the two perfectly! There's certainly no mistaking one for the other; while each has a great sound, I prefer the Dynasonics for that hard-to-tame quality. ... I wouldn't be averse, though, to adding a Flitertron-equipped model somewhere down the line.
@AdrianWhyte

Thank you!! Yes, hard to tame quality is a great way to put it too, I love the filtertrons and they are much easier to get a sweet sound, but I’m drawn to the dynas more often than not! If you can I would recommend it though because it is nice to have the Filtertrons too! Great to hear from you!

Great playing! I’ve always thought Gretsch nailed what they set out to do which was to take the sound of the dynasonic and make a hum cancelling version of it. The sound is remarkably very close. Where as if you compare a Gibson single coil p90 with their paf humbuckers they sound nothing alike.
@maxpeck4154
@maxpeck4154 19 күн бұрын
I would argue that the p90 and the humbucker sound almost EXACTLY alike... at full volume. Where a p90 shines is when you roll the volume down halfway - tons of sparkle and spank, whereas a humbucker gets buried in mud.

One of the few videos on a subject important to us Gretschies 😊. Well done my man. I have dynas in a Duane Eddy sig (in white pearl 😁). Got it because I thought I’d prefer them, then quickly realized I’m probably more of a filtertron guy. Whoops. I’ve learned to like them though. I did replace the bridge PU with a vintage dynasonic, one of the wacky ones with the trapezoidal case like from an old Martin acoustic. The stock bridge PU from Gretsch wasnt hot enough to keep up with the neck. I even had to have a tech fabricate a shim to raise the body of the vintage pickup to balance the output and get the sound right. Anybody else had this issue with the Gretsch version of dynas? I write this as if anyone cares… I will also say that the bridge dyna takes gain surprisingly well. I rarely use it on its own clean though.
@AdrianWhyte
@AdrianWhyte Жыл бұрын
Hey man, sorry for the delayed response - I reckon that’s similar to how I got into the dynas. I didn’t love them at first but over time I came to like the notchy, complex tone - they can really sing sometimes but they can also get dizzy with the wrong amp. Not the easiest pickup to work with but you can get some insane tones out of them! You’re also right about the output and the need to shim them. If I had have thought to shim my Orange 6120, I may have kept it but as it happens I sold it. I still use my duo jet a lot through, but interestingly I’m finding myself playing on a tele a lot more, but I do rotate for videos. I also found a bit of dirt really livens up the dynasonics! Anyway thanks for contributing!

Another nice presentation and I wonder this: back in the early rock n roll years, did companies who made electric guitars, even Gretsch, fully intend to wind pickups with different responses? Did the factory simply wind ‘em up and mount them… In all of my years of playing these early ( they weren’t vintage then …haha) and later instruments, there were never any considerations for pickup response. In other words, it had what it had. The last 25 years of so, this has become a more significant discussion
@AdrianWhyte
@AdrianWhyte 2 жыл бұрын
Great question, I kinda wonder the same thing- and did they wind them the same or have variations depending on the day or material or how drunk the pickup maker was then night before? Etc that’s something that could be explored more!

On Georges Most famous Gretsch guitar : The Gretsch Country Gentleman tereis filtertron Humbuckers. So Filtertrons is What George Harrison is famous for. Although he never ever wanted a Gretsch. His favourite guitar from 1957 untill he died was the Fender Stratocaster. He tried to buy one in 1957 but there was not one Fender Stratocaster in the whole of Liverpool so he ended up with a Stratocaster copy called Futurama. In Hamburg later he was to buy a a Stratocaster. He made the deal with the seller but the guitarist from Rory Storm and the Hurricanes got there earlier and bought the guitar before George got there. That scarred George for life. George had been painting Stratocasters for hours in School instead of listening to the teacher. In December 1964 he finally got his belowed Fender Stratocaster and from Help to Let it be about 90 % of all electric guitar work is Done on a Fender Stratocaster by George Harrison. In his solo career he only recorded with Fender Stratocasters. Even his guitar parts in Travelling Willburys ( Where They pose with Gretsches) are recorded with a Fender Stratocaster.

The guitar George called ” the worst guitar I have ever played ” was the Fender Rosewood Telecaster. The least used Beatle guitar of them all. Only famous for the rooftop top concert. George gave away the guitar the same year he got it in 1969 to Delany Bramlet. George was never again in his career seen with a Telecaster. 2 years after Georges death Olivia Harrison buys the guitar George Harrison called ” The worst guitar I have ever played” The Fender Roosewood Telecaster from Delany Bramlet and lets Fender produce the guitar. George would have been spinning in his grave to See the guitar he thought was the worst guitar he had ever played being sold by Fender. But Olivia has Done a lot of things George would have not had approved of after his death. He promised to pay a pension to his sister for 2000 USD for the rest of her life. The month after Georges death Olivia stops the pension payments to Georges sister. George was very private with his guitars and would never had allowed Fender produce a guitar in his name, let alone the one he thought was the worst guitar he had ever played, the Fender Rosewood Telecaster. He was approached 1974 for a Fender Stratocaster George Harrison edition 14 years before They started with artist editions but turned Fender down. They asked him every year after that but he always turned Fender down even though The Stratocaster was his favourite guitar. Now They sell his favourite guitar The Fender Stratocaster Rocky for between 25 000 to 32 000 USD. Something George never would have allowed Either. A run of 100 limited Fender Rocky Stratocasters became 215 guitars sold instead of 100. Then after the rich buyers ended, They made a Budget Fender Rocky Stratocaster limited to 1000 editions. Fender will probably be selling 7090 or 8000 of these instead of 1000. After that They Will issue another Fender Rocky Stratocaster with some kind of change from the previous 2 guitars and after that They Will make yet another Fender Rocky Stratocaster with something different in it and so it Will go on forever. Thats How Fender Works these days. Easy money all the time. The Stratocasters made by Leo Fender up untill 1965 are a lot better than the Fender Stratocasters They make in 2022. But Leo was interested in quality. The New owners only in money.

for me it's really hard to judge. I had to play both myself. unfortunately I can't get a Gretsch bar, and if so I can use an electronic art. I toy with the idea of just buying the pickups and building them in my Ibanez Artcore. All the best from Germany and thanks for the motivation you give me through your videos

No worries Dennis, appreciate your thoughts as always! I’ve seen a few people make the mod but never really be happy, if you can wait, get a Gretsch!

I think you sounds better through the Dynasonics. It's buttah (butter). A little tape delay is my favorite sound ever. It's very traditionally though. I love the Filtertrons as well. I have a less expensive Gretsch now with the blacks in it and they seem great to me too but I'm sure I get myself disgusted with these with very little effort. Lol. Pickup envy! Lol

Your tastes sound similar to mine! Yeah I think I’m just used to the dynasonics, I like that little bit of breadth i allude to! I actually think the blacktops have a great vibe unto themselves, it’s almost this rich harmonic and slightly trashy / sensitive / chimey vibe, maybe a video closely comparing them would be good!

Absolutely love the Dynasonics sound here! Longtime Filtertron player but I just (a few days ago) got a Red Sparkle Duo Jet with TV Jones T Armonds, but struggling a little to balance volumes and get the best tones. Essentially what ever I do, one pick up is louder than the other, and neck is not twangy enough. If I put a spacer under neck pickup it's louder than bridge and neck is too "wooly" with not enough twang, if I remove spacer it's quieter, and still a bit too wooly for me. Lots of advice online, but conflicting about how to get best sound. Your Dynasonics above have EXACTLY the sound I'm after, I know this is a year old video so hope you are still monitoring comments!? So just asking for your Dynasonic sound, how are you set up? Firstly what is string to pole piece distance for bridge and neck, and also do you raise poles, or pickup body to increase "twang", or lower them, and so you adjust pole pieces to string radius? I know this can be trial and error but having a head start from someone who already has the sound I want has to be a good idea! Simple answers are fine eg: Neck 3/16. Bridge 5/32. No spacer. Raise poles for twang - that's fine as an answer! Oh, not just the sound but great playing by the way!!!😀

Hey man, always here on the comments! I don’t have that guitar anymore but I can tell you the pole pieces were pretty low and the pickups weren’t shimmed. These are standard dynas which are a little different to the t-Armonds, the tv jones ones are a little more telecaster like, easier to pull a sweet tone from but less acoustic sounding, great pickups but different! For now though try lowering your pole pieces a little on the neck pickup, it should at least prevent it from being wooly- couldn’t tell you measurements, never taken a measurement on any of my guitars settings!

@@AdrianWhyte Many thanks for the reply. I never measured my pickup heights before, but never had this style p/up before and I got so many conflicting bits of advice, I thought I'd try and copy the settings of people who's sound I liked to see where it got me! I've got them sounding quite a bit better now - thanks again for your tips! I can see from the video that your neck p/up is sitting a little bit higher than mine - even though mine's got a spacer, just different body types and/or pickup covers I guess. Great work all round in this video !😀

Both have there place, dynasonics have that 50s rock n roll sound from older records, filtertrons more modern and chimey, more ‘setzer’ thing about them

I try to listen to an even amount of both with Gene and Eddie being the Dynasonics and then Malcolm Young and of course Brian Setzer with the Filtertrons. I quite like both. I lean more FT for versatility. Anything form the jazziest of jazz to the dirtiest of rock. I love it.

Okay well first off, the orange guitar sounds like an old guitar, the other one doesn't. That's making a big difference. If you want the old 50s and early 60s sound go with the dynasonics, if you want more of the overdriven rockabilly or Malcolm Young stuff then filtertrons. Also..... This guy needs to stop practicing scales, random scale sequences are good way to immediately sound like a fifteen-year-old.
@AdrianWhyte
@AdrianWhyte Жыл бұрын
That’s fine man, can’t please everyone! In regards to the pickups, filtertrons were put on production guitars since 1959, so that’s a fair point as the dearmonds were around earlier in the rock and roll explosion

So, I really got the typical adjectives used to describe them, ie, the filtertrons were very bright and chimey and the dynasonics sharp and twangy. The fact that you're such an amazing player certainly helped to highlight it as well, no doubt. I've got my heart set on a pair of Hi'Lo-trons next. One question, do you think contemporary pickups have the same tones as the earlier ones? I had a 1970 Superchet that I'd swear sounded better than anything else I've ever played, it mighta been in my head.

Hey Chuck, apologies for the delay - oh man there are some great sounding later pickups, honestly - I think people get stuck in believing the first ones are the best, but yes I love the later Gretsch pickups for different reasons! Thanks for the lovely compliments and I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Stick around here!
