Your honesty and thoughts tipped my decision. I gave one of these a try at the local music shop when I went in with thoughts of getting a Thinline Tele. After coming back to the conclusion that I am not a Fender guitar guy, I looked at the semi-hollows they had. A mate of mind has an Epiphone Dot that I have ambivalent feeling toward. I do like the sound she can put out. The first Gretsch I tried was the Center Block Jr with the humbuckers. I played for a good while and wanted to sleep on it. And watch videos….Watched this and decided I should give an P90 Center Block a try. I went back and the shop had a new shipment and sure enough the had som P90 equipped Gretsch’s in. I tried the Humbucker Jr again and the P90 Jr. When I tried the 2622, I was hooked. The larger Gretsch has a lush, full sound to her and the P90 do a wonderful mix of timbre. I’m hooked and happily so. Thanks for your reviews. You go into detail like few if any others do here on the web.

Quite a surprising guitar from Gretsch ! As far as I’m concerned as when I think of single coil pickups on a Gretsch I think DeArmond, or Hi Lo Tron ,( okay Eddie Cochran had a P90 in the neck position of his but it wasn’t original). Having said that the guitar sounds excellent both clean and distorted and looks cool. I’m unable to judge if it’s good value for money as I’m old enough to remember when Top Gear would sell you a good used ES330 for £125 or a 335 for £135 but it doesn’t seem expensive by today’s standards. Once again a very good demo with some nice playing, good to see the subscriber numbers going up, you deserve it.
@theguitaristas3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Henry! I’d say it’s definitely good value as it’s an original (not a copy of anything) by a leading historic brand... but it’s unlikely to be as good an investment as one of those old ES’s you have stashed 😜😂🎸

Hey, it's an old comment, but I honestly think that you'd be hard-pressed to find anything better in the price range. Without Bigsby, it's $550. Sounds killer, and fit & finish is better than the Epiphones & Squiers I've tried. It's $90 more expensive, but it sounds & feels like a $300 difference. If you're comparing to a USA guitar, it's obviously going to be a step down, but it rips and plays great. For the price it completely surprised me. Buying it tomorrow.

I think this is the best unbiased review I’ve seen on this guitar. I’ve got one of the 2622 hardtails - same walnut stain colour as the one you previously reviewed, but mine has the first generation ‘Broad’Tron’ pups rather than the BT2s. I gather Gretsch revoiced the Broad’Trons for 2019 and renamed them BT2. I really like my guitars Broad’Trons with some gain, and they’re great for a bit of Alice in Chans, Black Sabbath or ‘Pistols:) , but played clean they lack the clarity of the humbuckers in my other guitars. I recently tried one of these 2622 P90’s in a shop and thought its pups maybe covered cleans and gain better than the first gen Broad’Trons. However, I know what you mean about the cheapo control knobs - and I wasn’t too taken by the Bigsby on the guitar I tried either, as it’s not a string through design. I’m now wondering about swapping out my Broad’Trons for either some of the Fidelisonic 90’s or some Iron Gear P90’s…Hmmm. If anyone else has upgraded the pups in their 2622, I’d be interested to know what pups you chose and how you find them.
@theguitaristas2 жыл бұрын
Hey Amanda, I was definitely planning to change the BT2's in the other 2622 so will be looking into what fits. I have some Seymour Duncan Phat Cats which I thought would work but I'm not so sure now, but we will look into it before too long! I do agree though these guitars love gain.... hey do we even need clean when they sound this good?? 😎👍

I bought one of the early G2622Ts in Walnut Stain and was never very happy with it. The pickups sounded dark and muddy, and the bridge had an irritating rattle in it. I traded that guitar for a Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster. Lately, I have acquired the new G2622 P90, and it's a completely different entity. The fit, finish, and fretwork are excellent. It stays in tune for ages, and the P90s are unique, not sounding like anything else I've ever played. I agree that this model "feels cheap" but when you get down to it, the finish, the binding, the tuning stability are all exceptional. It is very light, however, which is partly why it feels less substantial. The control knobs do feel "plastic" and look a bit cheap. Gotoh locking tuners are a direct refit (no drilling required) if you want to replace the stock tuners. So far, I've not had any issues with the stock tuners, though. I'll not bother replacing any of the hardware unless it fails.
@josephduchene58492 жыл бұрын
The stock tuners are actually Gotoh tuners produced for Gretsch, 16:1. I think they should have advertised that, since it's definitely a plus, rather than Gretsch branding them. I played this guitar today on a whim when testing a Strat and was blown away. Taking a guitar in trade and buying tomorrow. Just a great sound and feel. So expressive.
@aitken19652 жыл бұрын
@@josephduchene5849 Ah! That would explain why the Gotoh locking tuners are a direct replacement if you wanted them! It’s a fantastic guitar for the money, and it plays like a more expensive instrument.

Appreciate the review, didn't realise you did this one! The smaller version in mint metallic has mahogany back and sides which I'm hoping has that less plastic all over paint feel... I do like the look of the cream knobs with the mint though but might change to aluminium arrow knobs depends on the feel. If you ever have a recommendation for a roller bridge replacement for this one, would be interested as had many suggestions but either cheap and wobbly with wrong dimensions to very expensive! P.S - you playing this is heavenly with and/or without gain. I can't sleep and I'm listening and it's making me smile 🥰

They need to make one of these in the 2627T format with three Fidelisonics and the Bigsby. I have an Epiphone Riviera Custom P93 and that model would be the ultimate Riviera P93 killer at its price point. Gretsch are owned (though not operated) by Fender - which is why Fender doesn't produce hollow body models anymore - and that would be a strong challenge to Gibson. Not to mention it would sound incredible and look like a heavenly combination of a classic Gretsch Rally and a Rickenbacker!

You were complaining about the plastic mountings the pickups were on. Two thoughts: Maybe if they were black or chromed they would look better? Secondly, my vintage,1975 hand-made custom made electric guitar (Murphy/Shaw) with custom wound super Humbuckers, there's black plastic pickup mountings about the neck and bridge chromed metal pickup covers. Maybe if the pickup guard was cut away to fully reveal the pickup surrounds it would also look better?

I can see where they were going with the plastics, and it is kind of cool, but the bottom line bit it them the rear. Better built knobs might have made all the difference in your initial opinion of the guitar's quality. Having a messed up knob straight out of the box would definitely have soured my impression of it.
@theblytonian3906 Жыл бұрын
Plastic knobs on the 2xxxx series are currently in line with Gretsch's Streamliner, Electromatic, Professional segmentation policy. That said, those Cream retro knobs are aesthetically more attractive than the tacky black plastic ones Gretsch have taken to putting on Streamliners which really do look cheap and do nothing to compliment the look of the guitar IMV. On some models they (Cream retro) are actually as tasteful in theme as Electromatic chrome ones. e.g. G2622-P90 Havana or Claret Burst. The other thing which irks me my sense of justice & logic. People will pay out on Gretsch for having plastic knobs on their cheapest segment, yet have absolute brand blindness when Fender and Gibson do it on $3k guitars!

Are you sure that's a Gretsch G Something-or-other? I'm only asking because I've got a Gretsch G Something-or-other, and it doesn't look like that. 😊 Actually, I've got five Gretsches now, running from a Rat Rod up to a Billy-Bo, and one is a white Jet with P90's, which I got thanks to your review! You know that thing when you see a guitar, and you think 'oooh'...

I'm not a fan of the tuners or the knobs... Other than that, it sounds good! I've got a Torino Green 2622T streamliner from a few years back, and besides the bigsby creaking and groaning (I need to fix that) I really like it.

I got one the other day and love it but the knobs need upgrading and the tuners

I enjoy your reviews for lots of reasons, not least that increasing age has made me more and more aware of a guitar's weight.
@theguitaristas3 жыл бұрын
It’s true for me too... if I am going to go anywhere near a Les Paul these days I ask the store to weigh it first and if it’s the wrong side of 9lb forget it! 😂 oh dear what happened to us? Cheers mate and thanks for comment 👍🎸😎

Sounds really good, looks good too, reminds me of a Harmony meteor(hollow) . You could take it out gigging as its light weight will make it fun to play. Good machine. Thanks.

Very cool guitar and thanks for the review. I don't believe those are actually P90 pickup though. Wouldn't the P90s have adjustable pole pieces (screws). Those pickups on that Gretsch almost look like the old Gibson AlNiCo 5 Staple Pickups. EDIT The Gretsch FideliSonic™pickups do seem to be constructed like the Gibson Staple pickups. P90s pickups use the dual bar magnets under the bobbin with the pole screws up through the center. The Staple pickups do not use bar magnets under the bobbin but instead use the rectangular pole piece magnets. The Gretsch FideliSonic™/Staple pickups are constructed more like a traditional Fender single coil pickup with a massive bobbin/winding. Either way, myself being a big fan of the Staple Pickup I'm gonna check one of these guitars out.

Oh man I just love Gretsch guitars. I bought a now discontinued Electromatic G5426T (I think that's the name) with the DeArmond Dynasonic type of pickups and I love playing it. I've commented on loads of videos that my dream guitar is a Gretsch Penguin in Cadillac green and gold hardware. I'll never have 3 grand spare though, plus they don't make them in that colour anymore so it'll have to remain in my dreams 😒 Unless anyone reading this has this guitar stashed under the bed and wants to sell it? I would also quite like a guitar with P90s so I might keep an eye out for one of those Streamliner P90 guitars, I thought this sounded pretty good for a cheaper Gretsch model 👍

I have a very nice Tele Squire Affinity from Indonesia...has Fender Pickups in it. It was a limited run, so I got lucky on that CHEAP GUITAR. P-90s RULE! That's the real point here. I have a cheap laptop from China with a P-90 in it and I LOVE IT!!!! 60's Gibson 125T with a P-90 LOVE IT!!! I also got the Epiphone Gold Glory with a P-90...talk about a FAT NECK MONSTER!!! I also want to put a P-90 in my Epiphone SG Junior

Any of you folks have horribly microphonic pickups? I picked up a demo unit and it was terrible it squealed with moderate gain at moderate levels. It took the pickups out and wax potted them and it took care of it 100% but is this how they all are out of the box?

Sounds good but no sale with it's "make it fit" looks. The plastic looks cheap, especially the cream or aged color. Why not just use metal parts or flat black plastic parts. I would want a roller bridge & locking tuners with the Bigsby.
