I so agree on the B to B tuning this thing came with. So, my story with it. I was in my local store, just kinda browsing. In a mood for impulse buy. And I see this thing. I never had a baritone, but always wanted one. Knew about them pretty well. So I thought why not. It's not expensive. Grab it, start noodling in the store. And it feels AGONIZING to play. It comes with stock strings of 14 to 72. Yes, seventy two. It was stiff as you know what. Grab my phone, google some alternative baritone tunings(remember, at that point I'm still clueless?). Decide to just keep going lower in standard. Arrive at A standard. And it was night and day. Suddenly it's agreeable, soft, pleasant. The lower you go the more comfortable these become to play. And that's coming from somebody who often finds 12s on a strat in E standard perfectly fine. Gorgeous cleans for massive deep chords. Great for texture work. Great for chugs. I ended up buying it, and exploring it a bunch more. So, my recommendation is if you grab one to try in the store - forget about B to B. It'll ruin your impression of how good this can feel to play.
@AdamTrain Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing, man. Exactly the kind of insights I was looking for before I bought mine, hopefully it helps someone else looking to get one!

27 inch and 11-54 is perfect for B Standard, and feels the same as 9-42 on a 25.5 inch in Standard. I can't even imagine 72s on a 29.75 for B Standard. That would be way too stiff.

Thanks man, I appreciate it If I'm honest there's nothing particularly special I'm doing with the guitar tone I'm running straight in to my iD14 then using a Klon plugin for some upper-mid edge and then into the Neural DSP Omega Granophyre and the GGD Zilla cabs Honestly, you could probably sub that out for any other high gain, but mids-forward, amp and cab setup (the album used the Archetype Plini plugin with the ML Sound Labs Mikko cab plugin) The biggest thing to get right is the overall mix and specifically the interaction between the guitars and the bass (the album mix has a TONNE of bass guitar... It's as prominent, if not more prominent than the rhythms in a lot of places) The guitars themselves don't have a tonne of low end, they're really focused on the mids

I am absolutely set with my opinion about this specific baritone model; I love it. I'm thinking of getting one soon, but I have one concern. Are the pickups adjustable? I could heighten them to adjust the output level for more sustain if so. And by the way, your playing is absolutely phenomenal, and inspired me even more. Keep up the good work!
@AdamTrain Жыл бұрын
Thank you! The pickup height as stock is not adjustable (I had the same thought as you!). It would be a pretty easy job to glue some foam to the back of the pickups and therefore make the height adjustable but not sure why they haven't done this as stock like most manufacturers do!

There's just something primal about those low tunings! Re: flipping the bridge saddle, I think you've just got to try it. Swapping it is a very quick job (just loosen the string enough that you can tuck it out your way) You can always try intonating it before you flip it. If it works, happy days. If not, you can flip the saddle to squeeze out a few more millimeters

Well done! Love the production. What's the bass setup/strings/tuning in this case? How did you manage to do it with only 4-string bass?
@AdamTrain10 ай бұрын
Thank you mate The bass is actually tuned in unison with the bottom 4 strings of the guitars When you tune down that low, having the bass and octave lower just isn't necessary (and even on extended scale basses I find it turns to mush in a mix) Even though they're in unison, the guitars still have a natural low end roll off and mid-push due to the way guitar speakers are voiced (and the guitar tones on this record are pretty mids forward!). It means there's still room for the bass to fill out the low end frequencies

just bought this guitar and slapped on the strings you recommended. it plays alright with everything else untouched but i'd like to try and give it a proper setup. you mentioned flipping the direction of the bridge, what does that do for intonation? also, with the 16 - 80 set are you able to have low-ish action without a ton of buzz? do you find yourself having to fret a bit hard? thx in advance!!
@AdamTrain Жыл бұрын
Flipping the saddle on the bridge just gives you a few extra millimeters to set the intonation correctly. In my experience, I got the 80 on the lowest E string to intonate but I had to flip the saddle to make it work perfectly The biggest barrier to low action, in my opinion, is probably the neck angle. There's a bit in the video when I talk about pickups and I show how far the strings are from the body at the top of the fretboard. You could adjust this with a neck shim (similar to what a lot of people do on Jazzmasters and Jaguars) I've not touched this because I don't mind the higher action up high but if that's something you're after, it's worth looking into
@paulbladder2 Жыл бұрын
@@AdamTrain ahh that's a handy solution, thanks for the tip!! one more thing... when using the NYXL strings did you find that the middle two were just barely long enough? switching out the V stoptail for a straight one would give me another inch of leeway but im concerned about the strings slipping
@AdamTrain Жыл бұрын
@@paulbladder2 I didn't find that but the set I'm using is for 8 string guitar, I wonder if they're a little longer than standard strings? (just a guess, I've not checked!)

This vid was a huge help. The only concern I have is the pups because I tend to use clean tones a lot with home recordings, but I think overall this guitar checks so many other boxes for me that I'm going to grab one. The scale length is a huge selling point for me, partly because I fuss over intonation more than most(also a consequence of recording with clean tones, because its harder to hide intonation imperfections). I'm also inclined to get it down to the octave E, if not F#, so I should get away with it. Otherwise, amazing job on the riffs/covers. Your recordings are very good.

This video sealed the deal for me picking one of these up, should be a good companion to my squier baritone jazzmaster. Does the 8 string NYXL set not feel a bit strange with only the high e string being unwound? I was looking at what strings would be best and I’ve noticed d’addario do a bass iV type set but it seems quite a bit heavier gauge compared to this. Not sure if you’ve tried it?

Glad it was helpful! Honestly, the unwound e has never really bothered me (other than the slightly wonky aesthetic!) I'm keen to try some heavier strings on this thing but it's such a challenge finding time to work on my own music these days... Such a boring, adult answer 😅

Awesome video man. I was wondering what you use to edit and how you get that look in the clips where you’re playing loathe? and in the last part where you do the cover?

Thanks mate! I use Davinci Resolve to edit Most of the look comes from the lighting. I'm just using a single light behind me to create a very dramatic look After that the colour grade maybe adds an extra 15% to the vibe

@@heavenly2k thanks man! I've not tried the Bigsby version so I really can't comment Love the look of it and I like the idea of it for that Kevin Shields thing but I was too scared it would affect tuning stability when the strings are this low

I'd buy two, probably my bassist wants to do something live too.

Bought some Gotoh SG381 MG-T Magnum Lock 3-a-side machineheads and ditched the very small buttoned stock tuners (fitted by guitar tech Andy Bunn) - 100% improvement with an F#-B-E-A-D-G tuning. Played it for a year (in this tuning) with the standard tuners and it always hurt my fingers - fully recommended.
