Excellent review and demo. Also love the tones you focused on. So many other demos stick with the standard old p90 options but you went a more aggressive route and I applaud you for that

I bought one of these new for $600 liked it so much I bought another or $400 used. I put a black Lollar staple P-90 and a gild super filtron plus in one and they sound great. But definitely needs an upgrade on the tuners and that's how I found this video is looking for tuning pegs, but now I'm gonna do some of the other mods, and add a gold spaghetti arm to the Bixby. It would be nice that some of the parts were listed.

Yes, it is the V4. I remember thinking it didn't fit at first either! It was like a year ago, but I think I removed the tuners and realized it would work by lining up the u-shapes with the empty tuner holes, and then pushing the tuner thru the u. It is probably a tight fit. I did have to leave off the washers on the E strings, top and bottom, to expose the locking tuner holes so I could string it - the u part is as thick as a washer and so you can't have both on a low-post locking tuner like the Hipshot.

Actually, TonePros TPFR-G Metric Bridge with roller saddles would be my first mod if I could only do one thing (not shown in the video, but added a few weeks after I posted). I would look at gold Wilkinson Eazy-lock tuners for under $30. You can also soften the stock spring by stepping on it 20 to 30 times. Good luck!

No, but now that I've looked them up I can hear what you're hearing - it's the kind of stuff I like for sure. It's just something I made up quickly to demo the guitar - not a lot of thought went into it to be honest. I heard an interview once with Joe Henry where he explained he wrote Don't Tell Me only to demo his new studio equipment and then his wife out-of-the-blue suggested sending it to her sister, Madonna. I liked the idea of making something up just to demo equipment, but still have parts - I call it "Gretsch song," though it's not really a song.

@@jeromespiritcontact4434 Thanks! Got one. In fact, I’ve decided to do most of the mods from your video but I ordered incorrect sizes for some parts. Can you tell me what size or model number you used for the rounded switch tip and the knobs? The ones I received don’t fit.
@jeromespiritcontact44344 жыл бұрын
@@TheLadsBandLive You've got to get Metric parts for import guitars. The control knobs are for 6mm Metric posts - the switch tip is 3.5mm I believe, but as long as it say's Metric in the listing it should the right one. If you get new tuners, it's for a 10mm hole.
@TheLadsBandLive4 жыл бұрын
@@jeromespiritcontact4434 - Had no idea. Man, I'm such a guitar-modding noob. Hope I can return the knobs (they weren't cheap). Luckily, I ordered 10mm tuners. On a related note, No one, not even Gretsch, could tell me what case fits this guitar. I went through three different models before finding the right size. Everyone promised their case would fit a G2655TG. To be fair, Gretsch doesn't make it easy with all their crazy codes. What's wrong with just a good old fashioned name?? Oh, well. Thanks again.
@jeromespiritcontact44344 жыл бұрын
Yes, the case is tricky. I had to go with Sweetwater because they're the only vendor that specifically lists it as the G2655 case. I ended up ordering 2 more parts since I made the video. The String Butler V4 Black Aero Premium (from Ebay), which took 2 months to come from Germany. I had to ditch the washers on the 2 bottom tuners (because the posts are short on the Hipshot tuners and the string hole was blocked by the washers), but the String Butler V4 takes the place of the washers and works really well. It pulls the strings straight across the nut - I was still having tuning issues with the G and D string. And, I bought a TonePros roller bridge that should arrive in the mail today. They're pricey, but I found a vendor on Reverb who was reasonable. I measured the diameter of the bridge post as 6mm, and the dealer assured me that it will be a drop in replacement. It was the only Metric for imports roller bridge I could find that had large 6mm post holes as well as a 12 inch fretboard radius - everything else was 14 inch. Would it really make a difference, 12" or 14"? Probably not much of a difference, but I would rather get the correct part because the action on this guitar is fantastic and I don't want to mess with it. It's kind of an experiment. Tuning stability is really good, but you still can't dive-bomb the Bigsby and have it come back to pitch. Not that's what a Bigsby is for, of course. But, I couldn't leave well enough alone and wondered if I put on a roller bridge if I could achieve ultimate tuning stability. As well, a couple of the saddles move back and forth when using the Bigsby - you might be able to see it in the video actually. I'll let you know if it works, or if it was a waste of $.

Liam, here is a complete list of all of the upgrades - starting with the Bigsby and moving up to the headstock. You can do a web search on each of these titles and it will point you to a number of vendors for the items. I purchased mostly on Ebay and Reverb to find the best price - except for the BiggsFix items that are only sold directly from BricksBiggsFix. Hope this helps! Vibramate String Spoiler BricksBiggsFix Bricks Super Squishy Spring Gretsch Gold Knobs - Electromatic series, 6mm metric posts Switch tip knob - 3.5mm metric thread TonePros TPFR-G Metric Bridge with roller saddles (not shown in video) String Butler V4 - Black Aero Premium (not shown in video) Hipshot Griplock open-gear locking tuners 3+3, for 10mm hole, large oval buttons - will come with Universal Mounting Plates. Finally, in the mail are new gold pole screws for import guitars from StewMac. These will replace the silver pole screws in the P90 and match the gold screws in the humbucker. I haven’t received them yet so I’m hesitant to recommend them, other than to say I don’t foresee a problem with fit (they sell one for USA pickups and one for import pickups). I will update this thread once I’ve actually installed them.

what do you lube the saddles with? and do you lube the nut also?
@jeromespiritcontact44343 жыл бұрын
Music Nomad Tune-it. I got rid of the stock bridge for a TonePros roller bridge (TPFR-G) - a huge improvement and the first upgrade I would recommend doing if you were only going to change one piece of hardware to improve the guitar. But, you know, it has rollers so having to lube the saddles is no longer needed - and, the new bridge sounds noticeably better unplugged, brighter (maybe because the rollers are made of steel). You must lube the nut, it's essential. Did I mention I installed a String Butler V4? Now the strings are pulled straight across the nut. This guitar really does stay in tune all the time now, even if I'm using the Bigsby constantly.

I tightened mine. You can still move it back and for though, so it's not clamped down as much as tightened but not over-tightened. The strings move across the roller, but the roller stays in place and doesn't move when using the Bigsby.

I know, exactly! You make a very good point. Gretsch saved $ by going builder grade on the hardware - but, things like the BiggFix (and String Butler and String Spoiler) were never going to be included. A 1k import would have had some of these upgrades already.The tuning stability and smoothness of the trem are night and day now. It was already a great player with very low action, velvety satin finish. I would never get my money back in a resale for the upgrades - that's reality, but the bones of this limited run guitar were great to begin with, so it was worth it to me. But, you're right.

I don't know, Rob, I could debate that - but, I see your point as well. I wanted a Gretsch and I like this body size and style, it's just more rock n' roll to me than the large body Gretsch guitars. I also wanted a very light guitar, under 7 lbs. I wanted a satin neck, and when I saw this model being advertised and sold in Europe I thought it had a cool "pirate" look about it. There are very few satin models in limited runs - and scuffing up a metallic gloss finish neck would never look right again, so I didn't want a gloss model. This one had everything going for it, except they had to cut costs somewhere and that was with cheapish hardware (besides the Bigsby, which is pretty great). However, since I really enjoy tinkering on my guitars this was really an opportunity to have some fun, as well. The guitar is a pleasure to play and it sounds good unplugged, too. I don't think I would want to mess with the pick-ups or electronics - it's kind of complex in there - and, I like the range of tones from this guitar, stock. You're right that I would never get my money back on the upgrades - unless I parted them out separately and put everything back to original. However, the guitar fills a void in my collection - having a hollow body guitar, so I don't have any plans to sell it. I also didn't have a guitar with a p90 - so, in the end it was definitely worth it to me.
