|| GREY CONSTRUCTION SAND FOR SUCCULENTS || DIY SUCCULENT SOIL MIX ||

Finally find someone other than me using construction materials for growing succulents! I live in US and have been testing cheap medium for growing hundreds pots of succulents. Recently, I landed at a similar solution as you do: I use paver base + peat + perlite. I did not filter the paver base in the past (given they feel gritty instead of dusty) but may be a good idea to start doing so. The paver base I got is more of a sand mix of various grits and crushed gravels (and may have some clay). I figured one reason to use these materials as paver base is it’s drainage property which is also what’s needed for succulent medium. And it works very well for me at least in a short term. Paver bases are supposed to solidify under pressure which makes me a bit unsure if it will cause problems over a long terms.

oh wow yes ….this has been so far the cheapest option hahah …hmm I have been using this over 1 year let’s see so far it works well …yes this make the mix super porous and help in drying the mix faster considering I have rains almost 5-6 months in a year this has saved my succulents…. thank you so much for watching 😊🪴

What about using compost or other organic matter with the sand and dirt? Will that help create a good drainage balance?

The sand that our friend shows here is quite different than what most building supply stores sell in the U.S. There are always going to be differences depending upon the region of the world that you live in. The U.S. has many different kinds of gravel and sand depending upon the region as well as depending upon what you need it for. The sand that the road workers place on the icy roads is definitely lower quality. Many places sell sand just to put in the back of a back wheel drive truck to weigh it down! Don’t know how well that would work for planting material! The There are people who have reptiles as pets that buy smaller bags of sand for the habitat that they make for their pets. When reading reviews I have seen that many of those people do rinse that sand before putting it in their aquariums. I would advise rinsing any gravel or sand before adding to your soil mix, especially if you have never used that type before. Most of the larger building supply stores have several types of sand. Sand to put on the ground to produce borders in the yard or garden. Sand used to make cement. Sand for other construction uses. Right now our local building supply store only has large amounts of sand that is bought by the truck load. I don’t need that much. 😂….yet It is difficult to know what you are buying when you buying sand or gravel online, especially with so many imports that are not totally honest about what they are selling. I have decided to bypass the sand for now. I am using Bonsai Jack’s Gritty Mix for cactus and succulents. There are other brands that make gritty mixes. I know what I am getting with Jack’s though. I add a more organic succulent soil to the gritty mix along with some other soil amendments, depending upon which kind of succulent I am potting. It has worked well so far. I am still experimenting with the correct ratio of organic to mineral content for a few plants. I guess we all have to do the best with what we have available to us.

thank you so much for watching and for the beautiful detailed explanation….you correct soil texture and type of soil differs a lot …..we don’t have much option here when it comes to cactus nd succulent mix ….online seller add a lot of cocopeat in the mix and sell it as succulent soil me finally decided to make my own mix 😊 yes the construction sand or soil tends also differ a lot 😊

Hello Sir, Filtering out the finest soil dust from the garden soil was an eye opener for sure 🤩🤩..... till now I didn't actually figure out why the soil tends to become so hard that it doesn't even allow water to pass through, I have used this principle for our normal plants as well.... I have seen hundreds of videos but you are the first one sharing it 👌👌👌 I just ❤️❤️ your soil mix because I have all of the constituents ready and start right away😁 . But I see that you have not added any fertilizer or compost to the soil mix, so from where will the succulent get food? or if we need to spray any liquid fertilizer to it?

yes actually This was also an experiment…even after use sand and gritty material at times my succulent soil used to still get compact I was like what’s wrong then once I decided lemme filter the soil and see what happens and there was the answer…the new filtered mix turned out to be even more better …so I think one should always experiment a little bit never know what might work out …probably there is some mix out there which we haven’t thought of 🤭… regarding fertiliser I have never used any …not sure why but I never felt the need to add any …succulents always grew well infact they even bloom and there is no added fertiliser in the soil apart from the regular garden soil …you can use freshwater aquarium…coz once in three months I use pond water but very rarely…after shifting to the new place I haven’t used any but the succulents still bloom

no avoid it in the mix but you can use those pieces at the bottom of the succulent pot

no it’s not really soil it’s more of granular sand when washed completely

Thanks for the information sir. Instead of mix you used, i tried with construction material calld aggregate (mix of gravel, sand, cement etc.) I used the same filtering technique you shown. It has dust which i discarded and has alrge, medium and small sand/pebles. I used medium and small. Hoping to see good results. Any suggestions? 😊
