This is a great video. A month ago I installed a grey water system from my washing machine and it was good timing because we have been getting 20 degrees above normal in the South end of the San Joaquin Valley in California. California needs to do this throughout the State.

Thanks for the video. In South Africa we are facing droughts and it is essential to reuse water. We do currently reuse water and have had problems in the past with the chemicals we have been using to clean either laundry or dishes. I am currently using the EMO Eco friendly products that's available on takealot and have seen improvement of crops.

Good video (but needlessly alarmist in my opinion -- careful and intelligent water-recycling is not harmful, especially for people with a good amount of land, like the old quarter-acre block, or a country property. But as you said, it is useable even in the city if done carefully. But then, city people need to learn to reduce their ridiculous levels of consumption first, and start collecting your own water, instead of taking it from the bush ~ where we are on permanent water-restrictions while you dingbats keep hosing your driveways! *And* needlessly turning-on taps for videos like this ~ thus _wasting_ yet more water!? Because, strangely enough, you actually _don't_ need to show us what a running-tap looks like ~ we've all seen it). Only thing to add is that one shouldn't use heavy detergent-laden grey-water on Australian natives as they generally contain too much phosphorus. The water from bathroom sinks, showers and baths is usually okay, but save your laundry grey-water for your non-natives ~ especially lavender, established non-native trees and shrubs - roses love it! - and so on. That said, you can buy low-P detergents especially for Australian native garden grey-water systems -- anything septic-safe will usually be okay, but do read the label. And most detergents are saline, so running them to salt-loving plants, like Old Man saltbush, first is the best idea (or filtering it through a constructed wetland area, or other natural salt filter, like a multi-level 'hanging' garden), and alternate your grey-water use with fresh (like the rain-water from the tanks you installed!) where your salt-table is high and your salt-loving plants sparse (that said, most coastal plants will do very well with grey-water, even natives, especially pig-face and coastal salt-bush). Do have a care on clay soils, however, as most households today will have far too much daily grey-water for use on a clay soil, unless you have acreage. But if you're serious about water-recycling - which you really should be - you can always use your excess grey-water to flush your toilet (assuming you haven't yet installed a composting loo). And please people, don't bitch about the costs or effort involved in installing a grey-water system -- the simplest only require a bucket or two, and getting off your arse.

It's great to read the comments of someone who knows what they're talking about. Thanks! Though it may go against the purpose of using grey water (as possible evaporation would result unless it's a sealed system - see below) but how about exposing flowing grey water to UV in sunlight for a short period? Would this reduce the count of harmful pathogens? Could flowing grey water be run through shallow tank (say 1cm depth) with a glass top? Could storage be longer than one month, especially if a solar powered recirculating pump was used?

A family of four in the U.S. can easily use 200 gl. A day on showers, brushing teeth, washing their hands etc... My washing machine discharges 55 gls. For a large load. A family of four with children can have as much as three loads in a day (I know not every day but...) Checked and double checked friend.

In most "Western" Nations. The average house hold of 3-4 people use about 200 gls. a day in showers and personal hygiene. About 50 to 100 gls.for cooking drinking washing dishes. Between 100 to 300 gls for washing clothes alone. The average full size clothes washer use 80+ gls of water for a large load of laundry. This doesn't even account for the 1 1/2 gls per average toilet flush.

Well actually, clean healthy urine is quite good for your garden -- especially for nitrogen-poor soils, or plants that require a lot ~ like a lemon tree. As for faeces, equally so if properly composted and processed. These wastes are considered 'black' water, not grey, but nature uses them too ... after all, what do you think fertiliser is?

Yeah,it will....but.... a word of warning. It works better after enchilada night,but avoid it after a lot of cheese or peanut butter,as a big ol' Moosehead is harder to wash down the drain.

@Loribyn6 жыл бұрын
Oh for crying out loud! Just where do you think your 'fresh' water comes from mate? :\ You don't actually think it rains directly over and into the dam ... do you? No! It's probably from a constructed reservoir of what is already naturally 'grey' water ~ water that's already run-off from forested and farmed land, that's had birds and animals drinking it and swimming in it, fish and frogs defecating in it, leaves, molds and fungi dropping in it, bacteria and algae breeding in it, farmers, cows and sheep traipsing through it; and so on. And every time you consume it, you - ultimately - are drinking-in history's sweat, blood, tears, urination, secretion and excretion from everything that has ever lived on this planet. You even, statistically, get a few molecules of the sweat your parents produced while they were creating you... Do enjoy that image, won't you!
