A friendly grey whale calf approached a boat so one of its passengers could pet it.
While Christian Miller was on a ‘Snotbot’ expedition in San Ignacio Lagoon, Mexico, on May 20, an inquisitive whale came to say hello.
With its mum by her side, the baby giant shot her huge head above the water and, chin first, approached the boat.
Obviously unperturbed by the incoming vessel, the mum let both Christian and one of his colleagues stroke the underside of her baby.

Other side of the coin is that we have such very superb gifts to comfort all creatures and they understand it with gratitude. I was raised on a small farm, learned that most all creatures were "hands on" for the betterment of both.

@@whalesong999 Not trying to be mean here but this is a projection of what our image of petting is. Do we really know what's in an animals mind? Called anthropomorphism and it's interesting behavior in humans.
@whalesong999
@whalesong999 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-ie5sc5ur2v To me, over the years, it's been an ongoing learning, both from wild creatures and domesticated ones. I have no concrete opinion, just go by what I sense on an individual basis. Putting our words to it is often spoiling something that really can't be simply explained. I feel an itch, I know the relief that comes from a good scratch - don't have to run to anthropomorphism to understand that an itch is pretty much the same with them. Given to precise examples, I've given baths to rid wild opossums of lice and fleas followed by worming them for internal parasites - the feedback from them showed ecstatic relief after a few hours to calm down and sense the situation. Whatever it is, I don't have to give it some scientifically approved word name to know we both benefited from an event only we can carry out with our fellow living beings here. I worked as a ranger at a drive-through exotic animal park and watched how the workers related to caring for the captive animal inhabitants and the reactions back. It adds up over time to form a moving sense, not some absolute construct. Edit: In the old testament, we are referred to as custodians of the earth. Perhaps it's part of that which guides us when we don't stop at only being charmed by the willing behavior of any other animal. If this is just about our trait to "pet", it must be partly the fulfillment of our senses, like a child first experiencing the world by putting things in the mouth. It perhaps just fans out from there but purpose is in there to not be stolen by rationalizing to take it away when one really doesn't know any better.

I like to think we have our intelligence for a reason (a selfless reason) we are a part of the ecosystem, and every creature has it's part to play. We have ours too. We are in a very unique position where we literally have the ability to "fix" problems in the ecosystem, or fill in the gaps. Perhaps that's one reason why physically speaking we are quite flimsy, otherwise we would probably be way too dangerous.

No, this is not a once and a lifetime experience. A once and a lifetime experience would be if the whale had accidentally swallowed a civil war era mine which didn't explode hours before only to breach the water over the boat triggering the mine to explode and splatter the whale all over the people and surrounding areas around the boat, while sinking the boat. Then as the people keep themselves above water a bunch of great white sharks come to feed in addition to a pod of orca. Both groups arrive at the same time and have a West Side Story singing duel w/ the winner taking the dead whale remains. The result of the singing duel is still up to determination so the humans ate the whale remains instead.

They're not actually parasites as they don't damage the whales nor do they suck their blood or anything like that. They are barnacles and itch but don't harm the whales though I'm guessing they probably would like them gone. I once suggested to a marine biologist that someone should install scratching posts where whales can rub against to scrape off the barnacles but he game me some lame reason why it wouldn't be good for the whales. I didn't buy it but I'm not wealthy enough to build one to find out.

@Logic Police scroll up to the comment from Gowri Preetha titled "Apparently animals are informed of the petting issue we have.. "must pet"", there's a good discussion there about anthropopmorphising but also that animals intelligent enough do appreciate and have some sense of enjoyment. I find it annoying too but u can't neglect the fat of how many animals do show genuine enjoyment when being around caring humans and/or being pet, even when they're not genetically engineered to like domesticated animals.
