Belugas are incredibly playful. I had one swim by several times observing me while I was on a dock and then went by and blew a huge amount of water on me. I laughed so hard and he kept repeating that cycle of swimming by and then randomly blowing water. I love them.

About 30 yrs ago I was a diver at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. One day there was some maintenance to do in the big tank, so the whales were held in a smaller pen behind a grate. After we were done, the grate was opened and the belugas came in. At first they kept some distance because we were not recognized by them. One passed by slowly just out of reach eyeing me. I was surprised to see how big they are! Huge compared to dolphins. They could have flicked their tail and hurled me out of the water and through the ceiling. I was almost to the other side of the tank where we had entered when one got right in front of me and began shaking his head and making noise at me. I stopped, not knowing what to make of this. He kept moving his head back and forth, and I realized it was more to my right than left. I turned and looked behind me. The other two belugas were in the middle of the tank looking down at something dark on the bottom. I swam back and recognized a dive weight. Now, I had been a bit under weighted when I entered so had two weights passed to me and put one in each vest pocket. Feeling them, I realized one was empty. They were telling me I had dropped something! (“They were saying ‘Don’t be a litterbug in our home’” my girlfriend translated later). I retrieved the weight and swam to the exam shelf and climbed out. The exam shelf is a shelf area only a foot or two below the surface where the dolphins and whales were trained to slide in for examination. As I sat there in the water at the edge, with my legs hanging down, they would come and slide up between my lags and place their heads in my lap, mouths open. “They want you to stroke their tongues” a biologist said. So I sat there feeling their marshmallow like domes and reaching between their jaws with rows of sharp teeth to hold and stroke their raspy tongues. I don’t know who enjoyed it more, me or them! I will never forget that experience.
@BadFluffy7 ай бұрын
That is so cool! I wonder if that's what this whale was expecting in the video. I don't know how he would just expect a reward for bringing something back. But if he has encountered divers in the past who knew this, maybe he wanted his tongue petted :D

Hvaldimir is a tame beluga that was rescued on the coast of northern Norway, wearing some sort of harness with a mount for a gopro cam. The text on the harness indicated it was made in St. Petersburg. It is suspected that Hvalidimir was tamed and trained by the Russian Navy, but somehow escaped captivity. He was named Hvaldimir after Vladimir Putin and the Norwegian word for whale - hval.

I understand the urge to feed the whale and I would be tempted, too, but it's a bad idea. The Norwegian government was going to relocate this whale to a sanctuary because they feared he was becoming dependent on humans for food, which could lead to him becoming aggressive. They'd already issued an order for him not to be fed or interacted with. Feeding wild animals puts them in danger. They start getting aggressive if humans don't feed them and end up euthanized, or lose the ability to hunt and can't survive.

According to wikipedia- "Hvaldimir is a male beluga whale that fishermen near Hammerfest in northern Norway noticed in April 2019 wearing a camera harness. After being freed from the harness, the whale remained in the area and appeared used to humans. Speculation that he had been trained by Russia as a spy whale led to his being dubbed Hvaldimir, a portmanteau of Norwegian hval (whale) and Russian President Vladimir Putin. As of 2023, Hvaldimir's range appears to have expanded to include areas of the south-western coastline of Sweden."
