It was intentional, all the crowd cried out 'Eh Oh!" at the end with him, but then only the sex workers sang 'She's a hero' with him, and then no one sang anything else with him after that.

In the first verse, he speaks from the pov of a client, in the second one the pov of a pimp, and in the third one the pov of a cop. While in the chorus, he speaks from the pov of the son of a sex worker. You should definitely check him out, he is a true genius (and I bet you heard some of his songs in the past without knowing it was him, especially Alors on Danse).

He's the most famous artist you've never heard of if you're in Britain or the USA. In many countries around the world he is a superstar (a term he actually doesn't like as he looks on his work as a job). Stromae who is Belgian, invented his own music genre. I highly recommend you go back 12 years to his Leçons, they were his innovative way of getting himself heard and look it worked as he became famous practically overnight with a song called "Alors On Danse" (so we dance). Stromae is known for his catchy tunes, serious and multi layered lyrics, genius theatrical designs for the performance of each piece on his tours (you should watch his "Racine Carrée" live from Montreal concert which was filmed by his brother Luc and is available on KZbin. You won't regret that 1 hr 57 minutes. Stromae also designs clothing and is a cinematographer. I've been a fan for 12 years and missed him so much that I spent all last year listening and rewatching his videos, live concerts and interviews in French and English. Miraculously on Oct 15 2021 a countdown clock appeared on his YT channel and Sante appeared. Then earlier this year he was on the prime time French tv news and answered a question in the interview by suddenly singing L'enfer (Hell) while still sitting at the interview table. L'enfer is about suicidal thoughts. This goes back to his adverse reaction to the anti malarial drug, Lariam, which was given to him as a precaution while on the African part of his Racine Carrée concert tour. But as usual Stromae makes his lyrics so they apply to anyone rather than just himself. I highly recommend you look up Stromae (pronounced StroMy - it is Verlan, a French slang which reverses syllables, so it's actually Maestro in Verlan). He is Belgian, his Mum is a white Flemish lady and his father was a Rwandan Tutsi who was in Brussels at uni for architecture when he met Paul's mum (his real name is Paul Van Haver). Unfortunately, when Stromae was only 2 his father was pressured by his father who had financed his education in Belgium, to return to Rwanda to help build up the country. Tragically, in 1994 Stromae's Dad was murdered along with one million other Tutsi in the genocide there. He didn't know what had happened to his father for a some years as his mother didn't know how to tell him. That's where the song "Papaoutai" (Dad where are you " came from, though Stromae, ever humble, changed some of the lyrics so anyone who grew up without a father would identify with it. I highly recommend watching his evolution going back to his brilliant Les Leçons" 11 or 12 years which led to his first album "Cheese", then "Racine Carrée" and now "Multitude" Though he stopped his Leçons years ago I enjoyed your review very much. It's so great to hear someone new discover the magic of Stromae. I was involved in Classical music, Jazz, ballet and rock n roll. Never a rap fan really, but he isn't a rapper. Somehow a KZbin rabbit hole led me to Stromae when "Cheese" was released and I couldn't be more grateful. I never tire of his music or his visuals. He really is a genius and his performances are unbelievably brilliant. He is very charismatic and charms any audience. This song is from 4 points of view the three verses are from 1. A client 2. A pimp, 3. A cop and the chorus is the son of the sex worker. Hope this helps.

At first, he reproduce the typical speach of a customer, then of a pimp, then, of a cop. Between each verses, it's the point of view of a son who defend his mother to have the right to be respected. I never usually watch reaction videos, but Stromae has a special place in my heart. Loved this video, particularly how you paused and replayed every bit that intrigued you and explained your thought process as you went. This will probably get lost in the comments, but just in case you find it useful: Fils de joie is pronounced 'feece duh jwah'. Literally, 'son of joy'; it's a play on words from a euphemism commonly used to refer to prostitutes ('fille de joie' = girls of joy/pleasure).

More than "girls of joy", fille de joie could be translate by "daughters of joy". So "son of joy" is a dobble play on words on his statut of son of (daughter of) joy. At the end of thé song, Stromae says "Je suis un fils de pute, comme ils disent" it's translate by "I'm a son of whore, as they said". "Pute" is an other french word for sexual worker, so Stromae says again he's e son of a sexual worker but "fils de pute" is also a injuring expression translate by "son of a bitch" ! In the french text, Stromae use this play on words to express the two sens of the expression. Worderful song ans worderful artist

I don’t know if a similar comment has been posted about this before but I feel like one of the most impressive things about this song (and all his songs tbh) is the emphasis Stromae puts on pronunciation. Even though I’m French, it took me a couple of replays to really notice it. Take the French lyrics, and you’ll notice how harsh the pronunciation is when Stromae speaks with the voices of the client, the pimp, and the policeman. When he speaks to the people who look down on his mum, the tone is still harsh, but as the son talks to his mother, everything is much softer, smoother. Anyway, I loved your genuine reaction to this incredible song!

Great reaction!! Just a little info, after almost 8 years of absence, Stromae released a new album 'Multitude' with very interesting songs characterised with the use of all kind of (relatively) unknown instruments of all over the world. He wanted the listener not to be able to put a finger on what it is, and where the sounds are coming from (Asian, African, Latin American,...), a multitude of sounds... Concerning the vid, this was all filmed at Brussels (Parc de Cinquantenaire), with actually a big crowd and of course some CGI. He cooperated with the Belgian National Orchestra (leaded by Dirk Brossé) to have an original sound (cello, harpsichord), instead of all around synthesizer. The result is an amazing sound blend, like you say Slash/Slash/Slash composition. If you wanna listen and react to more (crazy) Stromae songs, try 'Quand C'est' (sounds like cancer, and talks about the disease), 'Papatouai' (about the absence of a father) and 'Carmen' (about social media addiction). I think this song is more about fathers who are absent, they make children and disappear, leaving the child with questions and an empty feeling of missing his father growing up. I am French and this is how we understand this song, the title actually means « Papa où t’es ? » which is a familiar way to say « Dad where are you ? » The lyrics explain « Everybody know how to make babies but no one knows how to make daddies » Stromae said he barely knew his father and this is not related to the genocide, even if he did die during the genocide.

Stromae is a genius, and I think the word you were looking for is Poetry. His music is nothing short of true poetry in music form. Tackling so many topics, from being the son of an immigrant to the loss of his father at an early age, he does it with such style and such art that I am always blown away, always! The different verses are from the perspective of a pimp, a cop, a john and so on. The refrain is from the perspective of the sexworkers son. Take a look at his songs " l'enfer" about mental health and "tous les memes" where he sings from the perspective of both man and woman with a amazing video. He always mixes amazing videos and music with real gritty lyrics

Verlan (verlan = l'envers = revers) is a type of argot in the French language, featuring inversion of syllables in a word, and is common in slang and youth language. so "stromae" mean "maestro" in verlan !!

so i'm french , so here some more context : usualy stromae is consider one of the greatest text writter in france (parolier in french , and when msot of your music cultur is based on the use of incredebly well put french , that is not a low think to say ) he praticly never directly talk of something always a perspective to play around words . the fiest part is a client , the chorus the son, the thuman traficker , and then the police man . on a note of the spacing , if u could understand french ,and have some kind of knowledge on how we write shit , the simple agencemnt and tythm will go from suepr cool , to a fucking masterpiece (the the rhyme in alternance to speed up without changing the tempo , the fluditidy of subject everything )

I'm a bit tired with reading all those comments (since 2009) about Stromae being Belgian and not French. 😅 I can understand it's very important for you, Belgian people 👍. It's just that sometimes I feel it's a bit too much 😅. Most of the people know about his nationality, and for those who don't know, well, I don't think they really care. To them it's just about enjoying his music. And when some say "French singer" (specially in English speaking countries), they don't necessarily mean French as a nationality but French as a language. I think Belgian people could relax a bit about that. 🤷‍♀️ Stromae is first a human being, an artist. He happens to be Belgian, yes, for sure, but also European, and some see him as a Rwandan (ask someone in Kigaki) and an African. It's like everybody wants a piece of him... I feel there's a lot of appropriation in all this... But he doesn't belong to anybody. He's mainly himself. 🙂

Nice video! Stromae is a brilliant artist, and for French/Belgian native speakers, one of his most precious talents is his lyrics. Yes, there are now translated in English to make them understandable to everyone and it is awesome. But the lyrics in French have such a powerful impact, because he uses sentences that common people use to hurt others. Like when the police officer in this clip says "Reprends tes papiers et ce qui te reste de dignité.... Pauv' femme, pfff... trouve-toi un vrai métier". That's really typically what a lot of people would throw to the face of these women and without really realising it, they completely annihilate the life that's behind this profession that they have to do. It is only one example, but Stromae does that in most of his songs. And by using these very common and stereotypical sentences in a context that actually shows that these words hurt and that they are wrong, and that maybe people saying these words should see things in another perspective, he actually brings these people in real life to maybe think about the way they consider others. And I think it is a kind of Soft power you know, it is a bit educating people who are sometimes not open at all to actually look at different perspectives.... Does it make sense what I am trying to say :D? Anyway... for French native speakers, these are jewels of hope that people would get more open-minded thanks to his music
