From Greys Anatomy Episode 3x14 - Wishin' and Hopin.
ELLIS: "What happened to you?"
MEREDITH: "What do you mean?"
ELLIS: "You're happy? You're happy now? The Meredith I knew was a force of nature. Passionate, focused, a fighter. What happened to you? You've gone soft! Stammering about a boyfriend and saying you're waiting to be inspired. You're waiting for inspiration? Are you kidding me?! I have a disease for which there is no cure, I think that would be inspiration enough! Listen to me, Meredith. Anyone can fall in love and be blindly happy! But not everyone can pick up a scalpel and save a life. I raised you to be an extraordinary human being, so imagine my disappointment when I wake up after five years and discover that you are no more than... ordinary! What happened to you?!"
MEREDITH: "I'm not sure refusing treatment is what you want to do..."
ELLIS: "Apparently, what I want doesn't matter! It isn't even legally binding! So it's really about what you want, Meredith. You're in charge!"
MEREDITH: "You think that I like making these decisions for you? You think it's fun to get calls from the nursing home asking whether I was planning on giving the nurse, who changes you every morning a Christmas tip? But I do it. Because you have managed to alienate everybody else in your life and I am the only one, so I have to step up and do it. You wanna know why I'm so unfocused? So ordinary? You wanna know what happened to me? You! You happened to me!"
ELLIS: "Then let me refuse the heart surgery."
MEREDITH: "No!"
ELLIS: "Why not?!"
MEREDITH: "Because killing my mother is not gonna be another thing that happens to me."

Considering how bad her Alzheimer’s was when she was introduced, the writers might’ve realized they couldn’t really use her without making her a complete shell due to the Alzheimer’s or overuse the excuse of her being lucid whenever she would appear, which would make the disease feel pointless. They kinda wrote themselves into a corner by giving her such severe Alzheimer’s at the start

I agree and disagree in a certain sense - Meredith is certainly extraordinary but she also talks about feeling complete as a whole person which is also key...Ellis never felt happy about having a family and resented her obligation to them much the same way Cristina would if she had a child...Meredith is clearly in a much healthier frame of mind when she has her own family which is why she can be a great surgeon AND have her happy-ever-after

You can hate Ellis if you want. But that woman brought the passion and precision to this scene that is so very critical to understanding how Meredith has both survived and accomplished so much. Yes, Meredith is a more traditionally likeable person. But make no mistake about it, Meredith has that Ellis fire 🔥 in her belly.

Sara lee fuck off about it. She has Alzheimer's, you think it's her fault. Alzheimer's doesn't just take your memory. It takes a every bit of you away piece by piece, they stop knowing how to swallow, how to talk, how to even move and then stop breathing. It makes your attitude turn mean and it's not something someone with Alzheimer's can control. My grandmother almost killed me a while back when she choked me and now she loves me again. It's just the disease that makes you like that. Do research before you say something.

Does anyone else ever feel like that she was upset with Meredith because she didn’t want what happened between her and Richard to happen to Meredith? She loved Richard (another doctor) but she became blinded by love and then he left her and all she had was her career. She didn’t want Meredith to fall into this relationship and loose her career the one thing she thought would be there over a man who could leave her at any minute.

Looking back at the scene and seeing all the Greys episodes, you realize why Ellis was trying to keep Meredith from going through the pain of losing your true love and giving up you me own child. Then you also realize how strong Meredith truly was. Through all the tragedies in her life, she raised 3 children, owns and runs the hospital, is a gifted, innovative, and pioneering surgeon; and is the best friend you want to have when the chips down. Definitely not ordinary! Almost immortal? Lol

This is a rare instance of a perfectly scripted and acted scene with immaculate character/dynamic exploration. In the beginning, Meredith is sitting, her knees tucked up (embryonic, but also child-like position). Her mom is standing. Meredith is looking up to her while Ellis is looking down, creating a sense of their power-dynamic, no words needed. Ellis opens the conversation once. Meredith tries to answer but doesn't get to a full reply and stops with a nervous laugh. So her mom has to give her another question with a full direction of what Meredith should tell her. When Meredith tries to answer again, every single one of her answers is interrupted by a follow-up question, indicating that either her reply wasn't good or interesting enough to her mother, thus bringing back old feelings of insecurity and lack of self-esteem that was induced by her mother's absence and disinterest in Meredith as a person. From her mom's perspective, Ellis, who feels like she's made bad choices after having a family she didn't really care for and investing feelings into another man who let her down before she focused solely on her career, the only thing she had left to redeem her self-esteem, is instantly worried when she hears about Meredith focusing on love for now. Of course she feels like that is a mistake she herself has made in the past, and we can collect all of this through the hints that were placed throughout the past two and a half seasons. I also love how as the intensity of the scene grows, as Ellis gets more and more angry and projects her disappointment in herself onto Meredith, who starts feeling hurt by her mother, there are only really tight shots of their heads/faces, reflecting how they are pulled back into old patterns of intense emotional conflict. Before this episode, their interactions in all scenes have been sort of 'skewed' by Ellis's Alzheimer's, but now, in this moment of clarity, we get such a clear-cut instance of what their dynamic was like Meredith's whole life before the illness. And it is not a pretty picture, but such a raw, fleshed-out and relatable one, expertly put to the screen. To the writers, directors and actors of this scene: hats off!!

This is literally my relationship with my parents. Although it’s not just my mom, it’s both my parents. And also my parents would never waste their breath so long on me to say complete sentences. I’ve never had a conversation with either of them that lasted the length of this clip. They’d just passively judge and insult every microscopic thing I do, and if I dare respond they would scream and slap me before calling me the most disrespectful piece of shit they’ve had the misfortune to meet. Then they’d leave before I can say anything since they can’t afford to have a whole 3 min convo with me or else the world will come to an end. Watching this scene actually made me envious of Meredith bc at least her mom says full sentences to her and called her a disappointment. Mine just hates me and want nothing to do with me. Any reminder of my existence sends them into chaos

As a child with parental issues myself, I always have to step back and look at Ellis point of view. She made a lot of mistakes because she was so blindly in love and unfocused from her own career choices. Richard hurt her a lot because she had fallen in love with him despite her marriage to Thatcher and their shared daughter Meredith. Meredith is right. She hasn’t been so focused because everytime she’s upset over her mother or father is dawns on her pretty hard. I feel then she should start to fumble or become not as good at her job. Meredith would talk about Derek when he would hurt her, but I felt she would still go into medicine with drive, at least for the first few seasons, however, it never really made her stumble or fall too out of line like her parental issues would.

I know that lots of you in the comment section are going to hate me for saying this, but Ellis is right about what she said to Meredith. At some point, Meredith lost focus of her career as a surgeon and Ellis was simply calling her out on it. In the beginning Meredith was all about being a surgeon and she was determined to be great. However, as time went on she started to settle for less until eventually she was more focused about what was going on outside of work. I know it was pretty brutal, but she was being honest about it. I’m not saying Meredith isn’t great because she is, but she definitely could have been better if she had stayed focused. FYI I’m a Cristina, so maybe that’s why I see it that way. Please don’t hate me for it.
