As the State of the Nation Address approaches, we appeal The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa to recognise and protect the rights of the LGBTQI+ community! Greyson Thela from Access Chapter 2 shares their hopes for this year's SONA.
This year's #QueerSONA aims to highlight Sustainable Development Goals which South Africa undersigned in 2015 as part of Agenda 2030. Agenda 2030 does not explicitly include the LBQTI+ community, which often leads to a lack of commitment towards allocating state resources to ending discrimination and violence against LBQTI+ people. This needs to change!
In his State of the Nation Address, when the president addresses all three arms of the state and the rest of South Africa, we want to be included in that speech. We want our voices to be heard. We want to be addressed as part of South Africa and for the President to live up to the constitution that he helped draft and has sworn an oath to protect. This land belongs to LGBTI people too.
