A good tip is to get out your Christmas lights (battery ones), set them to constant and string them around the house, you can even put them on a timer. Bring solar lights in from the garden. I also have strategically placed push on/off battery lights. The type you get for a couple of quid. The best torch I have is one that plugs into a normal socket, it comes on automatically when the power goes out so I have immediate light to find the others. Yep, I live in an area that has a lot of power cuts!

We've just bought a light that has an 8 mtr string light that is the same idea as the Christmas lights and it is also a tent light or whatever that charges off USB C. I intend to use it for camping and using Christmas lights at campsites when fires are banned is what some people do. Might be nice to hang up in the Garden when we're out there in the evening as well.

Don't forget to add the Weltool LB03 304# Stainless Steel Strike Bezel on to a 6D 1200+ LED Lumen Maglite conversion for a tactical house torch. Lots of conversion additions such as a glass breaker and MagLite C/D Cell side Handle Baton Tactical are available for a customised Maglite.

The Acebeam Terminator M1 torch can be a quite effective home use torch for blinding the house intruder or invader with the LEP torch

The Mag lights are very solid you can get an led conversion for them so the battery lasts much longer. The old ones also should have a spare bulb in the back end. I have a selection of torches, oil lantern's and candles. All the best Jon

I use a LED Small Flashlight Torch Keyring,LUMINTOP EDC01 Keychain from Amazon in my EDC Altoid tin. One AAA battery last 24h+ on lowest light level. And in pitch darkness, it is plenty light.

I have ordered the ASF MagLite LED Conversion/upgrade bulb 5000 Lumen Torch/flashlight 6D Cell CREE, which is mostly floodlight and would also provide a strobe function for tactical home intruder use.

I would say, those Chinese, chargeable, super bright torches are rather sturdy, and could be very good at blinding a potential attacker so you can get away, so they have good self defense uses. I keep one in my bag alongside a head torch for that purpose.

Ive owned a few different flash lights from surfires to flash lights for a couple of quid from petrolstations. But the one ive used the most and has stood the test of time is a head torch from Aldi for £12.00 takes a couple of AAA and ive used it in all conditions and its never let me down.

The battery holder in the cheap torches is to put the cells in series to get the voltage high enough to run the LED's not to make them last longer.

You can also get adapters to put AA or AAA batteries in C and D cell devices. The AA and AAA batteries are truly a wonder of flexibility. The C/D adapters usually take 3 or of the smaller cells and put them in parallel.

Watch out for the frequencies of the led torches, as they can strobe Which you can only consciously see when you wave your hand in front of the beam, but they can cause headaches and disrupt your thinking processes.

if you're prepairing for a blackout then directional torhes aren't the best thing to only have to hand. a battery powered LED lantern will be better at lighting an area or a room.

I have a great torch i got from costco, the Usb c port has just gone belly up, luckily it takes c cells as well..... yes its a big heavy metal torch and i wouldn't want to use it as a club because it would be wrong.....so if i used it as such it would clearly be a spontaneous decision in line with the circumstances and no more force than would be necessary 😀

The Led Lenser P17 makes for quite a good quality and reliable house torch. D cells are more economic and LSD NiMh D and even lightweight USB rechargeable Lithium D cells are now available along with 3 AA to D cell Adapters so would use 9 AA cells. A block of VARTA Industrial Pro D Mono Alkaline Batteries LR20 - 20-pack costs around £22.50 and would provide around 300 hours use @ 450 Lumens.

You missed out the "wind up" torch's that use a squeeze action to provide light and to charge a small internal capacitor (that allows the light to run for a bit with no squeezing) Ideal for emergency kits as there are no battery's to check every few months. I would be very wary of using a plastic sweet wrapper in a bulb torch due to the heat of the bulb 🔥🔥

I've found the energizer head torches to be the best for value and they come with batteries .the blue 200 lumen range are the best for battery life and giving out enough light they can be bought for around £7 .For lighting a room the work lights that use power tool batteries are really good and give you loads of options .

I have torches and a lantern that I use with my 18v tool batteries and in spite of having lots of lighting options the one we always seem to grab is a very old Makita torch simply because it's close to hand. I like to dual purpose everything that I can and have said many times that using tool batteries this way is a great way to go.

I find being able to charge most rechargeable items in an ICE car or van is invaluable as our vehicles are generally used daily. Even in a shtf situation you could charge your items for days before having to start the engine. So to using rechargeable AA batteries you can get usb rechargeable chargers. It's good to practice as part of your daily routine. I have a hard wired dash cam that I can unplug for this use so not needing the ignition on and live on a hill so not bothered if the car battery runs down as can easily bump start also.

I used to like the idea of using disposable battery type lighting but not so much these days Throwing out batteries, yeah I know about recycling, is a waste imo and if you don't stay on top of checking them you can destroy gear if the batteries leak over time. I've lost a very expensive torch this way. I've found that rechargeable AA's etc don't seem to have the life of the normal cells and need recharging quite regularly. Also a rechargeable device can be recharged in many ways including small solar chargers that aren't very expensive and can be portable. Are you sure that torch you have with the USB micro can't have the battery removed and charged separately? The ones I have seen use the 1860 style battery and our charger can charge these and can also be used as a power bank as well. Another thing I would suggest is to try and standardize your charging types where possible. USB C seems to be becoming the standard now. We have cables that have 3 charging types to reduce the number of cables we need to have laying around. I often see preppers who have boxes of AA and AAA batteries and I think it's pretty wasteful and unnecessary tbh. Maybe the SHTF situation we will face will be due to waste and pollution?

Great flash light here www.bmstores.co.uk/products/eveready-rechargeable-led-torch-399537 - Great work torch, I love these & cheap as chips also bought www.ebay.co.uk/itm/312036524020 - The torch is ok, the battery is poor, but having the extra charging options is gold . 18650 batteries are cheap, last ages and can be re-charged via any USB socket. AA & AAA are useless as they don't have a useable run time.

Watch out for cheap rechargeable batteries as they don't last long. Do some research and don't make the same mistake I made when I spent £150 on rechargeables😡🤬🤣
