When a spouse or partner dies, life often turns upside-down. There’s no script for grieving, no schedule for “moving on”, and no one right or wrong way to do either. A Deaf gay man, Mark shares how he coped following his husband’s death. 🌈

Thank you Mark for telling your story. My partner and I have been together for 21 years and we are so entwined in each others lives that I cannot imagine life without him. Now we are getting older together and I just started my retirement, I guess we just have to enjoy our time together and make new memories while we can. My heart goes out to you and I hope that this message finds you happy and healthy.

We were together for 21 years before my partner / husband died from complications of COPD. After the first 6 months of living in a fog in which I couldn't remember one day from the other, I sought therapy. It has help me place my grief in it's proper place in my daily life. I am so very glad I took that step. I also had to face how to live as one instead of two. For me, I had to sell our home and start again. I sold or gave away a lot of things and replaced them with things of my liking and "taste". I still have many things we, as a couple, liked and bought together, they're part of the happy memories, but other things had to go. I still have a memory box with little things in it that remind me of him: his slippers, coffee cup, baseball cap, his wallet and the like. From time to time, I go through it and weed out the things I can't remember why I kept in the first place. This way, with the furniture and décor items, I'm not erasing him from my life, which is my biggest fear.

Mark...thank you for sharing your story...you appear to have a very positive outlook. I'm sure Ron would be very proud of you. I also lost a lover of only 10 years who was hearing impaired...he was teaching me so much. Every couple has a very special story and memories. Very glad to see you have made adjustments and continue to live your life to the fullest. Stay safe and keep sharing...you are a man of great grace and understanding.

One of my best friends just died. As a young queer person we always understood why there werent many queer elders left but to see it firsthand. To know someone who wouldve been a great elder and now will never get to be is an unimaginable pain. & i dont see enough ppl talking abt it.
