Grief and Recovery: Similarities and Differences between Substance Abuse and Gambling

This workshop compares and contrasts Substance Abuse and Disordered Gambling areas of grief. Participants will begin to understand the grieving process of disordered gamblers and how they also have a love relationship with their addiction. This presentation will discuss how the love relationship is powerful and can lead the gambler and the Substance Abuser back to their addiction if the person doesn't recognize the need to grieve this loss.
Participants will learn to facilitate this grieving process and what to look for in the "normal" grieving process vs avoiding or denying grief. Participants will understand the addicts love relationship with their addiction and how to begin to build a healthier lifestyle.
Jerry Bauerkemper BS, CDGC is the past Executive Director of the Nebraska Council on Compulsive Gambling. Mr. Bauerkemper was the first director of problem gambling(1992 to 1996) for the state of Nebraska where he created the Gamblers Assistance program and pioneered the treatment of gambling counseling in Nebraska.
