The 2003 version is just a whole different animal. It was made to fill in some of the gap between the outbreak of the Clone Wars, all the way to the surprise attack on Coruscant, fleshing out in vivid detail how the Jedi were caught off-guard and Grievous just outsmarted and overpowered them. Compared to that, the Disney Clone Wars is exactly that: _DISNEY_ . The inconsistencies around Grievous are very jarring. One minute he's a badass who's personally slaughtered dozens of Jedi Knights, the next he's losing one-on-one lightsaber duels to Padawans. One day he's the best strategic mind the CIS have, pulling Alexandrian battle tactics out of nowhere, the next he's an idiot who couldn't organise a drinking session in a brewery. I think it is the conundrum between "He is a military genius, which implies being able to win" and "but he is a villain and therefore has to lose." Grievous is an interesting character. He claims (and seems) to be a fairly competent Military leader (maybe even one of the best). But his downfall are his crippling obsessions. He desperately wants to kill Jedi in 1v1's (with limited success and only winning by cheating). If he had taken the more aggressive and attacked the Venators+ Escorts, he could've easily beaten the entire fleet, Kenobi and Anakin included.
@priscyllathewitch2984 жыл бұрын
The problem is he usually faces plot armour in the show. How many of his fights are between him and Kenobi or Ahsoka, for instance? As far as cheating goes, you can see a very clear pattern in most of his cheating, that being that it always happens after the force is used against him. As far as strategy and tactics go, clearly he's great at what he does to even have his position, but obsession and overconfidence are his primary character flaws. Canon Grievous clearly isn't as effective as Legends Grievous, but no Canon character is as good as their Legends counterpart. But Grievous being incompetent is a gross over-exaggeration, probably only there because of his 2003 debut. But you don't see anyone saying Canon Windu is bad because he can't punch Super Battle Droids to death. Maul's got the same flaw of obsession, but it rarely hinders him to the same degree because the writers went out of their way to try and make him as cool as possible to the point his flaws mean nothing. Like, Maul being a competent leader is counter to his characterization prior to The Clone Wars, but of course he becomes the competent leader of a group of thugs and then Mandalorians, the "cool soldiers" of Star Wars. Stuff like that. But the presence of Grievous' flaws actually meaning anything is a reason that 'Grievous is a Hero' meme account exists.

@@nfldend501 except the Jedi were not particularly good leaders. Why would they be Jedi training prior to the clone wars had nothing to do with military tactics, they were peacekeepers at that point. Just look how often they are the senior commanders but are fighting in the front lines, that's a terrible place for them to be as they have no tactical overview and no way to actually control the battle and respond to what is happening outside their immediate vicinity. Then the tactics they employ frequently consist of heaving infantry advance across open ground under fire despite clones being a valuable resource.

6:20 ; One error with that statement Eck. I think you may have forgot that the large dorsal hanger bay doors arn't the only way for fighters to exit the venators; There're also two side hanger bay doors of decent size which have been seen/used throughout the clone wars, a hanger bay door on the bow as seen on the Battlefront II 2017 GA Kashyyyk map, and a ventral hanger bay seen used in S1E14. All but the bow are well protected and together can still launch more fights than their munificents counterparts. Other, quite the excellent battle breakdown per usual. Hope your voice continues to recover.
@thenightman78794 жыл бұрын
Your right in your point that it can launch fighters from the starboard and port hangars but (And im bringing this up using a reference to Battlefront II) if you recall from those maps those hangars are decently big but still fairly small. only able to hold i'd guess around 10 star fighters or so in total so using both of them that gives you 20 maybe 30 if some are held in reserve suspended over the rest of them on cranes. on the other hand the dorsal hangar can hold over 3X that amount so it would be more logical to use that one over the side ones. Regardless its a good point none the less and i was thinking about it too.

True, but the galaxy isn't 2-3 planets. They can't concentrate everything in one battle. Also, if they wanted they could've waited for support, but by then Grievous could've escaped. Meanwhile a battle for the capital will obviously involve enormous forces, even more with the chancellor at stake.

@@godji9396 Even so, a battle will incorporate far more than three capital ships and four smaller ships, this is something you'd expect out of a skirmish. The moment you mentioned the hanger doors as a vulnerability I started thinking about a minor redesign. The first would be to add 20-25 point defense turrets on the edge of the dorsal side to protect ships as the leave and enter the hanger from enemy fighters. The second would be to add 2, preferably 3, layers of ablative hull armor on the ventral side. Third would be 20-25 turbo lasers on the ventral side. Fourth, adjust the primary attack angle when attacking head on to 15-20 degrees so the ablative armored ventral side is taking the hits, exposing the enemy to additional firepower, and protecting ships entering and exiting from turbolaser fire until they have decent maneuvering room.

Great job as always Eck! I do, however, have points as far as the Venators go: They didn't just have the ONE hangar opening, having port, starboard, and ventral hangar access. They also could have made swiss cheese of the Munificent frigates with full power to the weapons and shields, and heavily damage the Recusant's shields with their pinpoint accuracy (which you said they have mind you). On the other hand, Grievous doing what he did was actually smart in the beginning, trying to lure the Republic into attacking his fleet, though that isn't what happened, as the Venators have superior range to all the CIS ships (ten-light minutes or 1.799 X 10^8 [179,875,474.8] kilometers at maximum range).

Regarding your point about at 6:23 about the C.I.S putting pressure on the three Venator's Hangars i totally agree with that tactic. Also like you pointed out (And this is just my opinion.) I've always found the Venator's larger hangar to be a critical weak point on the ship as much as it is a invaluable strength. While not as vulnerable as the hangars located on its starboard and port flanks the forward hangar has two critical weak points: Point number 1 being (Facing). while the forward placement of the hangar allows fighters to be deployed incredibly quickly if the timing on the launch is wrong the entire squadron of fighters exiting can be bombarded with Turbolaser fire as they slowly rise out of the ship's hangar. As far as i can see there cannot be a deflector shield in place while the craft are launching so an enemy ship be it a cruiser or even a corvette has a straight shot right inside one of the Ship's most vital aspects. Point number 2 Id like to discuss is the size of the hangar. like with the first point this can be considered a strength allowing the Carrier to have a larger compliment of star-fighter's but the hangar is so large that it reaches almost straight back to the base of the bridge structure. If a very powerful weapon was to strike the back section of the hangar it could theoretically sever the bridge structure from the rest of the Star Destroyer. And those two points along with other faults like the primary weapons placement and hyper exposed bridge structure always make me second guess why it was used for so long in such an inappropriate role. I know that the Venator was designed to be a carrier, and I know that it was only near the end of the clone wars (Thanks to Palpatine wanting to drag the war out.) that the republic finally got better front-line ships. Even so. I find it strange that the Jedi. (wanting to save lives more than anything.) Didn't petition the senate for the funds or G.A.R command earlier in the war to either: Retrofit the Venator for a more wide role, or design a similar ship for a more (Battle cruiser/battleship) Role. Regardless awesome video. I love the effort put in and i always love seeing you talk about these battles strategically It really makes me think about how things would've played out if the faction in question used different tactics at specific battles.

I personally would have had a few vulture droids attached to the munificent classes, maybe even replaced the recusant with a providence instead. Sure I'd lose firepower but I'd gain much more fighters and bombers. I'd also keep my flagship pulled back a bit, call it cowardly but I'd rather not be at the front of the fleet where I could die first. Many people underestimate the power of a successful bombing run. Hell I would have had a lucrehulk as well, if I had a Jedi Master captive and knew another Jedi strike force were coming I'd make sure to cripple them even further. Imagine taking out General Kenobi and Skywalker, both great strategic and lethal minds.

“Grevious’ disadvantage was his lack of organization at the start, due to the fact that his forces were scattered and he could not organize, he became cornered, and could not maintain any semblance of good supply, since he usually has logistical support from droids and support ships. His escape was due to a critical misstep on our side, but our side won the battle and destroyed his force. I think if our side had another reconnaissance or patrol detachment, they would’ve found him faster. I’ve studied this exact battle for the event I would ever encountered him, and I’ve never encountered him. I’m a lucky clone, aren’t I?” -CS/CT-8711-12 “Cheng”, Captain and Scout of the 442nd Siege Battalion

#AskEck why do medical droids not appear to have more soft material on their figures? When Koth rests on one at 4:17, I can’t imagine resting up against a hard, metal robot would be very comfortable, especially after being tortured. Why were these fitted with some sort of padding, or even cloth at the more sensitive parts, like the arms, shoulders, maybe even the palms? I understand the fingers need to be dexterous and mechanically precise, but the arms? The shoulders? Never made any sense to me

One thing to bring up, while anakin and galilee could've destroyed the droid pilots, not just the commando droids and tactical droid in the rescue, that would've alerted droids on board that something happened in the ship, and the mission was supposed to be stealthy.

Clone Wars Grievous was such a chump. This battle breakdown was done spectacularly and it perfectly demonstrates how much the series relied on an incompetent villain for it to work.

Eckharts, I have a couple questions. Question 1: How would you build a fleet as a UNSC admiral, choosing ships pre, during, and after the Human-Covenant War. While I know you would prefer canon sources, I would also suggest that you look through this site "Halo Fanon". It contains fanon ships as well as ships used in Sins of a Prophet as well as some home drawn designs as well as using ships from other sources. Question 2: How would the Citadel species react to the history of the UNSC and the Swords of Sangheilos as well as the other species like the Unggoy and the Jiralhanae. (Post Human Covenant War)

After researching this again, I have just one comment. Your idea for what Grievous should've done is pretty spot on with my own idea but you said it yourself... The dude has a major problem with beating jedi in melee combat. I'm sure he knew what the best strategy was but time and time again he goes against reason just to satisfy his own ego

I feel like this really reflects on Greivous' warrior-like personality as he'd much rather face his nemesis face to face and kill him with his own hands. Man the Kaleesh are ruthless and I love them! I hope we see a bit more on greivous' past and even about the Kalee.

huh... a question that came to mind when Eck talked about blowing up his mostly automated ship: most CIS ships are crewed by droids. why do they keep them pressurised/filled with air?? it does them no good while wasting resources/energy and giving the enemy a tactical benefit... and even if you have fleshys on board, you only need to have the sections in question pressurised.

How would Star Trek ships by the end of the Dominion war fair in combat against Star Wars Expanded Universe and Warhammer 40k vessels since in Star Trek some of the less advanced factions like the Cardassians and Romulans had been able to significantly damage a planet's crust as seen in DS9 when the Obsidian Order and Tal Shiar had bombarded the entirety of the Founder's homeworld which would be in the teratons of explosive force. And we are talking about the Post Dominion ships where the Federation has militarized and has updated their ships quite alot. So it's likely we are seeing about the very least somewhere above a dozen teratons. And I thought the Expanded Universe 200 gigaton per shot statement was quite ridiculous.
