The rules should be changed. An interference call to start off a heat should be a 2 point deduction from the surfer's overall heat score. Griff absolutely circumcised a few of those waves and the penalty was too steep given the circumstances. They could also make it so there's different tiers of interference penalties. Griff was the far better surfer that heat and deserved to win. He could've had two 9.43's and still lost the heat because of a paddle battle for a mid wave with over 32 minutes left to surf. To me, that was just two guys fighting hard for a wave and it could cost Griff a shot at a world title. WSL should definitely take a hard look at this. The ramifications are far too costly for such a small incident

Joao's post heat sounds like he planned that heat start, he knew griff was gonna go for her first wave and his only way of winning was to give colapinto an interference. Played the game like he says

In my opinion it wasn't an interference. Not much Griff could do in that position. Joao turned to go for it last second and when Griff saw he was going for the wave he was trying to go the opposite way of Joao’s right (as you should in any lineup) to get out of the way and let joao through but griff got turned into as joao was trying to make it last second trying to get more into the peak. I'd say kind of a poor call

Joao just got smoked in this heat and I think knew he couldn’t beat Griff in a fair battle but bad judge’s call.

When the wave was rolling in, griffin had the right of way laterally, however chianca was further out. Chianca used the depth he had to ride the wave to the side and steal the lateral priority. Strange ruling, as a surfer shouldn‘T take of side ways to the breaking part of the wave. Unfortunate cause griffin was absolutely shredding

You obviously don't surf or haven't watched the full heat replay. If you watch from the 3 minute mark you can see that Joao was further out and closer to the peak and Griff clearly tries to snake Joao by cutting across to the inside at the last moment but completely fks it up and deserved the interference for such a dog move. With Joao wearing head gear his peripheral vision wouldn't of been great and wouldn't of really known where Griff was.
