Pianiste hypnotique.

Why would someone come to this recording and spend all his time tearing it down? If one doesn't like the performance, an adult would just move on to other listening. It's a very special type of immaturity that drives one to go to another pianist's posting and trash the playing. Jealousy? I suggest there's a strong chance of that with someone who simply cannot bring himself to limit his *attitude*. But, of course, he knows better than all of us, doesn't he? (By the bye, last time I checked, the name was Ivo Pogorelich.) The pot *really* calls the kettle "BLACK!", here, n'est-ce pas? The irony of his flinging the term "snob" at others is deliciously lost on him. Why stay here to pick and pick and pick? It suggests an infatuation. Because, in the end : De gustibus non disputandum est.

Chopin had a strong rebuke for his students, most were aspiring professional musicians, who couldn't produce the cantabile playing he emphasised in his teaching : "He, or she (add name) can't put 2 notes together !!" Ouch !!!

Have you heard Moravec, Pogorevitch, etc, etc, etc? And among younger pianists Avdeeva, Trifonov, etc, etc, etc? If not, I'm confident that your ears will be opened to another universe of musical expression. Sokolov is a competent pianist at best. Beware of hype in this "group think" age, it will cheat you every time, as it does in this case. Being famous because one is famous is no good thing.

+limitattitude I agree and one of the best JS Bach pianists I have heard and seen, is Jill Crossland from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. The populist hype says that Glenn Gould is one of the greatest, and yet I find for example his Goldberg Variations to be hurried and boring. Each to their own of course.

+limitattitude Yes, people are snobs very often but this recording is extraordinary. I listened to some of the pianists you refer to above and in case of these preludes for me they don't compare. And even other Sokolov's concert recordings of the preludes do not match.

+Leonid Polonsky Well, yes, actually - Sokolov's a competent professional pianist. The best I've heard is his version of Bach's Art of Fugue. However, listen to Gould's recording, and hear for yourself how where Sokolov's interpretation is not merely different, but actually lacking. Devotees sometimes claim that the bad placement of microphones, etc creates the harsh sound we hear. Perhaps so. I'm sorry if you are offended by my opinions. However, I love the piano but hate the group-think on which I think Sokolov's inflated reputation depends.

+limitattitude LOL If you don't like him, why do you put so much effort to explain us that his music is crap? And what evidence shows what? Are you talking about music?

nbharakey To be honest, I'm really trying hard to understand the phenomenon - not of Sokolov, but of his fame. That Sokolov frequently bangs the notes irrespective of the musical line - unlike the majority of professional pianists, let alone the famous ones - seems obvious to my ear, one devoted to the piano. The emperor has no clothes. I'm 100% open to being corrected - I'd learn more that way - but so far respondents have mostly resorted to knee jerk "how dare you" comments and some just abuse. This suggests 'group think' rather than informed opinion. Are you any different? I'm open ears, if so please let me hear your views. Thanks.
