I tremble with excitement every time I listen to this. My daughter played this for her diploma. At the age of 16, the piece must feel like insurmountable at first sight. When I played this version to her, she was so stressed that she cried. But in the end she did it and got a distinction in the exam. Excuse my bias as a proud father, I think she played just as well as the great Sokolov :-)

This 5:49 alone is a perfect illustration that Sokolov that his being left out of "Great Pianists of the 20th Century" 200 CD set when pianists like Previn, Magaloff, and Eschenbach were inlcuded among many other grossly inferior choices.Sokolov's ability to capture a moment and an audience is breathtaking. There is so much more to Sokolov, but this video clearly shows that he was one of the greatest pianists not just of our time, but all time.
@Walter509 жыл бұрын
classicalalways I think that the omission of Sokolove has contributed to make "Great pianists of the 20th century" obsolete, not to say ridiculous, more than anything else.

As an amateur musician, I wonder how it must feel to so skilfully play the most beautiful music known to man. I wonder, is it immensely pleasurable, more like the more biological pleasures, or does the intense concentration and skill required, prevent a true ecstatic experience. I suspect it is a mixture of extreme pleasure and discipline - this also seems to me central to Bach's music (often incorrectly described as 'rational' music in my opinion), a rollercoaster that balances extreme passion with extreme thoughtfulness (without either of the two getting dominant and suppressing the intensity of the other, resulting in a constant high intensity presence of both ratio and emotion, an intensity unparalleled by any other composer )
@davidschestenger73503 жыл бұрын
Jorge, I totally agree with you, at the length of your entire concept about the music sokolov and Bach, all the feelings converge in Bach music, intellect, passion and the human part in its highest degree, one thing that’s make it look cerebral is the deepness of concept, Sokolov is one of the privileged that where able to grasp it and bring it to us, also Sviatoslav Richter was another one I’m also an amateur musician, and discover musicality in the most innocent line of music is intoxicating Music is my favorite country, thank you for sharing
@patrickfraser53982 жыл бұрын
I have often thought of Bach's music in this way but never been able to find the words. You express it perfectly. I hear a deep and pure emotion of the spirit in the music of Bach.

As a pianist you can feel the music vibrating, i feel the pleasure in Bach's beautiful harmonies and my ears enjoy the beautiful melodies. I believe it is necesary to really understand a piece though, only then can you truly experience it 100%. I had my piano exam not long ago, and I could truly sing along in my head while playing, it does require immense concentration but you're also almost directly forced to feel the music, that way you can make it sing towards the audience
