This was the beginning of Bret Hart's 'justified heel' phase. His kayfabed complaint actually rings true. "60 minute iron man match". The challenger had 60 minutes to score more falls than the champion. He did not succeed. Bret was the "new gen" champ, even though he won the title close to WM9 after being in WM2. He probably kicked off the attitude era with his post-Sid match promo, but never gets recognized as AE performer. He seemed like his character was "Cause Vince has no else place to go," and that should have been his WCW character. Although I think they tried making him a "no label" type, but it was put over poorly and confused.

I actually think Shawn's message to Earl was directed at Jose Lothario, who stepped into the ring to celebrate with Shawn after the pinfall. You can see Earl go directly to Jose to relay the message after and he gets out right away. It's been revealed that Shawn during this period was against the idea of having Jose with him at all, but Vince thought it would help his babyface image to have his trainer by his side. Shawn was so paranoid at this time that he was even afraid of Jose stealing his shine, so it only makes sense that Shawn would tell Earl to get rid of him because I'm certain that the whole title celebration moment was planned out in his head.

Just rewatched it, it looks like Shawn starts talking to the ref as Jose is climbing in the ring, and the ref goes first to Bret and says something to Bret. @@EGarrett01My theory is that he was telling Jose to get out but Earl assumed that he was talking about Bret, as Jose was Shawn’s manager and he probably thought Shawn wanted him in the ring. So he goes to tell Bret this, and Jose can be seen in the ring now. Shawn goes to tell Earl again, and he finally goes to Jose and tells him to get out, which he does. Either that or he was telling both of them to get out. But looking closely it seems like a misunderstanding.

To be honest I think a LOT of the Bret Hart/Shawn Michaels feud was just theater. I don't doubt that they didn't care for one another or sometimes fought, but too many of Michaels' A-hole moments on television have turned out to have been planned for me to think he wasn't playing to the camera just a little bit when he cussed out Bret, and according to Bruce everyone was yelling at Bret because the PPV needed to end with Shawn's celebration and Bret's dejection. People cuss like sailors in the entertainment industry and in sports, including WWE, and I think that was just "communication" back in the day. I don't entirely trust Bret when it comes to him saying that people stiffed him because he also didn't trust guys like Flair and Malenko to not try and take liberties with him, and I think he's either still trying to keep the Hart/Michaels feud alive or his health problems have affected his mind over the years to the point he mixes up kayfabe and reality (no offense meant but even Jericho has talked about Bret being "odd" sometimes). Overall, I didn't care for the match and I think a lot of what Bret wrote in his book is either sour grapes, him sticking to kayfabe (partially), or him mixing the two together.

There should have been couple of pinfalls going on in the match. Like come on. At least a 4-4 before sudden death overtime.
@quikdeath1004 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Back then Bret and Shawn weren’t losing matches so it be weird for them to be pinned 8 times in a 60 minute match. Combined they probably didn’t even have eight losses between 93 to that match.
@oneshotperrotte15414 жыл бұрын
I thought the ending was great! Bret thinking he won the match and having to return to the ring! Bret was visibly upset and the story told in the ring was great! I think having multiple pin falls could damage both wrestlers moving forward in there carriers and there rivalry. Bret had said that he wanted to work with Shawn for many more years. So if Bret and Shawn beat each other in multiple ways in one match it would kinda dilute there rivalry for the future. I respect your opinion sir. Just wanted to give you mine.

He is married to Flair's not-Charlotte daughter, so that's how he has the connection to synch up with his partners (he has 2-3 others). The material is mostly just Dave Meltzer write-ups, which he knows will sufficiently piss off all of his broadcast partners for one reason or another. Sometimes Meltzer was way off base. Other times he was a bit too on the nose. In any event, that he wrote it is enough to get the subjects hot under the collar.

I apologise if this has already been mentioned but the focus on michaels telling earl hebner to get bret out the ring is a fucking work! There was supposed to be a rivalry created between shawn and bret and bret had already told shawn he wont shake his hand ! so to build the work and rivalry shawn tells hebner to get bret out of the ring, I really dont see the problem here, also bret and shawn were amicable back in those days .

I love their rivalry but the Ironman match was a lot of time killing necklocks with action every 5 min or so. The last few minutes were good but for me personally their ladder match in the early 90s is their best. The first ladder match in wwe BTW...not WM 10 🤨

People talk about how great Shawn Michaels was but they forget that his run the in the early to mid 90s was the company's darkest times and according to alot of the guys WWE almost didn't make it so yeah he might have been a top guy but does it really matter if buisness was in such dire straits
@ninetimesaday4 жыл бұрын
The business being in dire straits is not a good barometer of what a top guy could do, as who the top guy is rarely affects outside forces affecting a company, especially the WWE in the 90's.
@randomthoughts45692 жыл бұрын
That is why the business was in such a state because of Vince’s decision to turn undercard talent into “top guys”.How do you go from guys like Hogan,Warrior,Macho Man,Andre etc to Bret Hart,Shawn Michaels?..Highly underwhelming.
