Wrestling Bios Presents - Shawn Michaels vs Bret Hart: Breaking Down the Iron Man Match
Shawn Michaels vs Bret Hart at WrestleMania 12 happened in Anaheim, California in 1996. Shawn's popularity in the WWF was through the roof, he had been pushed to the moon and his time to become the WWF champion had come. Bret Hart, meanwhile, still have a loyal fanbase who were not ready to see their hero lose the championship. This video takes a look at this very match from WrestleMania XII, a match that some consider one of the greatest WWE matches of all time while others aren't quite so sure.
One of the main talking points about Hart vs Michaels at WrestleMania has always been the amount of rest holds used in the match, along with the minimum use of high spots and exciting moments. In this video, I have counted every single rest hold, how long the rest holds have been put in place, and how many high spots the match actually had. So if you're curious about the actual numbers surrounding the match, make sure to watch!
Topics covered in this video include:
00:36 - The lack of consensus regarding Hart vs Michaels at Mania XII
02:21 - Shawn Michaels' main event push
04:17 - How the Iron Man match came about
07:45 - An in-depth analysis of the entire 60 minute match
12:10 - Final thoughts on the WrestleMania XII main event

I was 6 years old and I was at my grandparents house with my parents watching this match on PPV and I marked out so hard when HBK won, I was running around the house screaming and crying in joy. I will always love this match just for the great memories from it.

In terms of a realistic wrestling match that is exactly you'd expect to see, stalemates over big moves It resembled more of a shoot style Greco Roman match that emphasized who truly is the best

Right and that's what they wanted to put on, a real wrestling match, but fans and their tiny little attention spans, they want a high spot fest, it's the same in Chess, people don't like slow positional Chess, they want to see a quick tactical massacre. Honestly I don't mind the slow methodical style because unlike most I don't have the attention span of a fruit fly!

@@patrickperalta59 yeah it was well thought out, Bret prides himself on knowing him to wrestle but HBK understood the entertainment side of the business more then Bret did, so they were very different in some ways but both were great wrestlers as in men who can wrestle and maybe I'd even give the nod to Bret in that area since Bret grew up in the business and the business is or was in his blood, Shawn was just a kid with a dream, not that there is anything wrong with that. Any way I say all that to say that the two of them came up with a really good match, the first 30 minutes were the "Greco Roman" style of match that you spoke of with alot of "take downs" and "rest holds" and the last 30 minutes were more action packed, some high spots and a few top rope moves etc.

That's the problem looking at it now. Looking at it now it should have at least been 5 finishes. Two to Bret Hart, to the HBK & going into overtime with Shawn Michaels doing the super kick as to finish.

I feel that undermines the point of pro wrestling since whole reason pro wrestling broke away from shoots/MMA and Greco Roman style wrestling was to provide an experience unlike them. To provide moe interesting spots and storytelling that's only possible under kayfabe. To go back to such an old style isn't wise because it only appeals to a very specific kind of Wrestling fan that's used to this specific combination. Casual and even regular Wrestling fans won't enjoy it due to the lack of excitement. Shoot Wrestling fans won't enjoy it since the few high spots are unlike shoot wrestling. To use an analogy, it's like a video game that's basically 99% cutscenes and is trying super hard to be a movie. It's not going to appeal to video game fans due to the limited gameplay. It's not going to appeal to movie fans since you need a video game system to even access it.

@Telly Delucca well that's not nice. I'm a Bret Hart fan myself but being a sore loser never helps at all. Sesh misery loves company huh.. That's really mean. Can't win every match dude. Bret and Shawn squared up more than 100 total matches against each other, and Shawn only won 2 out of those 100+ matches.. How is someone gonna be that douchy to not let their friend or loved on enjoy themselves, pretty immature.. especially an adult throwing a fit over a "predetermined" event that his favorite wrestler willingly ALOUD himself to be pinned and lose in. It's comical.

To me this was a 5 star match. It's one of my favourite matches of all time. I wasn't the biggest fan originally and after hearing people call it boring I never bothered watching it again. However I recently watched a video about their rivalry and decided to watch it again and I loved it! One of my fave matches of all time. In fact I've just done a quick off the top of my head "Top 10 matches" list and this ranks at number 4.

I recently watched it and there's no boring moment. The psychology was on point. Why would they go full steam from the start if they knew they had to wrestle for 60 minutes? Of course they would pace themselves. This is tied with Bret-Austin in WM13 as my favorite wrestling match ever.

i agree, and the controversial ending made it even better. if i was Bret i'd love that match, i dunno why he took it so personal, it's a pretend title, and scripted match. that ending made it really unique, and the crowd was so into it, a nasty crowd to say the least. their best match for sure, and the most underrated match i can think of (cause you're not allowed to tell the truth of how great it is, cause it hurt Bret's wittle feelings. like Bret, get a grip, and be proud of the match, it's your match too, and it's awesome, made even better by the ending (but maybe one of the things that keep it awesome and controversial it's Bret's mental break down over it, lol)

@@only1icon1801 My mom had a boyfriend that was into it, and I started watching. My first Raw was the episode where HBK got his "concussion" from Owen Hart, and I had to see what happened next. I was hooked after that. You should check out Shibata vs Okada. It starts slow but ends up being one of the most insane matches I've ever seen. No weapons or cages or anything like that, just two guys beating the holy hell out of each other. One of them had to retire afterward, and you'll probably understand why when you see it.

While I agree the first half of the match could have had a quicker pace with a few more high spots, overall, I think this match is an absolute classic. Two legendary wrestlers in their prime giving their best. It's the crowd's reaction that hurts this match. Too many fans nowadays lose their patience for slow, methodical, technical matches. They were telling a story with this match, and I enjoyed the story, though I wasn't happy as a kid when Michaels won. Hart was a better champion.

It’s a great match. So called “rest holds” used to be a part of the psychology and pacing... you don’t blow you’re load you take the audience on an adventure and a story... you’re not gunna win a match with a drop kick either does that mean they should be a thing of the past, and OMG ONLY 45 minutes of moves in a 60 min match that’s it I want my money back. Your comment on the subjective nature of wrestling is spot on fella. The reason why I moved away from many wrestling channels is that they present their opinion as fact and sometimes outrightly insult the opinion of someone else. not suggesting we should all agree on anything but respect opinions because when you look at the facts. Wrestling is a very silly thing indeed and the best sort of Storytelling out there.

Fair point on bringing up the short attention span of LA crowds, as opposed to the old NWA regions. Remember also, Bret had said as part of his build up promos and training montages that his strategy was all about getting "that crucial first fall" and then continue pressuring Michaels. A lot of the way the match played out had to do with this and we might see it under a different light when re-watching it with that in mind.

I remember watching this match from beginning to end--though I understand this "breaking it down," I was definitely not bored. Being a Bret fan, I'd hoped that Shawn's entrance was nothing more than a display of inflated ego(having met him personally to realize this)and not a sign of who'd emerge victorious. I have to credit both Bret and Shawn for providing this match during the days when wrestling kept me engaged in the matches. Sadly I can't say this for today's matches--they just don't provide the "magic" to keep me engaged.

Cool break down. I was one of those people that felt like this match was all rest holds until I saw this. I hated this matched btw. If you can break it down like this and show that there is more action that people remember, and they still feel like it was mostly boring rest holds, something went wrong.

For the modern wrestling fan, this was a new thing, but, as you’ve said, it wasn’t a new style of match. It was meant to be a passing of the torch and..... well, that didn’t work and that’s life. Part of a great era, the Hart Vs HBK, style Vs style.

When I was a kid me and a friend ordered this PPV. We were both super excited about the iron man match, and talked about what we thought would happen. We predicted that both guys would be gasping for breath and barely able to move by the end, and that there would be perhaps a dozen pins within the hour. When we saw the match we were both really impressed, feeling they kept a much better pace than we expected. Nowadays I don't watch pro-wrestling, but I do like MMA. In MMA there are lots of boring spots, but if you get invested the tension before something happens can be a very pleasing experience.

I love this match those little details something a lot of people don’t mention that also help this much in so many ways was the commentary. Vince with the boyhood dream you know everyone always mentions that, but King commentary throughout the match was the actual best commentary is ever had seriously he’s amazing in that much no one mentioned that, and I just love the sport feel of the match, and I truly Love the Ironman part of the match it really creates an interesting dynamic Brett perfect for these kind of matches with more focus on submission wrestling, and not inserting much energy against Michaels high impact style Michaels has, and like hitting his big moves really quickly, and runs on a lot of momentum, and having to figure out a way to go 60 minutes with the most patient the most technical wrestle in the company. I just love that kind of stuff, but it’s not for everyone, and I can see the criticism for this match.

I loved this match at the time and I used to watch it on repeat. As a 9 year old I had sided with HBK in this era - and the match was clearly a celebration of his brand. The first time I watched it (the morning after it happened) I cried happy tears in front of my friends. I think Shawn going in number 1 and winning the rumble was the thing that won me over to Shawn, but I was a very fickle fan back then. Also, before hearing these criticisms, I just always saw the holds in this match as an opportunity to take in the spectacle. All the holds looked legit and both guys had a good pump on and were selling well. They looked exhausted and intense... Using submissions on an opponent in an iron man match is extremely good psychology/common sense also.

Incredible match. One of my favs. The only thing I can say is I think they underestimated themselves as far as the pace they could go at. It was the first 60 min match for them & the first iron man match in WWF. They planned rest spots they thought they would need. If you watch the the HHH/Rock or Angle/Lesnar iron man matches, they went full speed the entire hour. Still this was incredible!!
