Grilse! Generally, they are smaller salmonids that have spent only one winter at sea. They are quite possibly one of the most frustrating of our salmonids to attempt to hook and land safely. Notorious for 'grabbing' at the fly rather than 'taking' it properly and when being played, they are renowned for their ability to 'spit' the hook. Even when they are apparently en route to the net with their head on the surface, one last tail flip can often see them prematurely freed with nothing to show for your efforts, not even a photograph! Visiting angler Ken provides us with a nice example of how gently these grilse can be successfully played, on a long double-handed rod. Happy days ;)
