The puzzles aren't THAT complex. The puzzle to get on the ship from Rubacava just takes proper use of the Communist Manifesto, a forklift, a matchbook, a metal detector, a picture of giant cats, a woman's coat, some messages from a skeletal pigeon, a broken fridge, a can opener, a scythe, a VIP pass, a bomb disposal unit, a crooked roulette table... Hey, where are you going?

Honestly this is the best adventure game I have ever played. I think the funnest part of the game is trying to figure out what you have to do. This game doesn't hold your hand, which is something most modern games seem to do. It makes every puzzle you solve much more rewarding. The story is very original. It almost makes you wish the afterlife is like this..... well minus the balloon animal dude! Seriously, if you haven't had the chance to play this game, please give it a shot. It will not disappoint!

***** Or from exploring the game. Like we used to...in 1999... I loved the game he used as Telltale's The Walking Dead, but that was just a completely different matter. The "problem" with the puzzles in games like Grim Fandango isn't related in any way to controls, like the "action" moments of The Walking Dead.

You do realize that even when we solved the puzzles back in the 90's we were still frustrated with the extreme lack of explanation or hints, RE1 remake has clever hints(except for one box puzzle from hell) but this "doesnt hold your hand" shit needs to stop, it needs to inform the player in some way, putting a random number word puzzle up front of me or chucking me out into legend of dragoon with zero direction is a negative

MM3D has an optional hint system. People say the notebook gives you hints, but it registers events AFTER you figure them out and do it, there's footage of that. But in some side quests, if you zoom-in on the map you can see a flag telling you where the person is if you made an appointment to meet somebody at a certain place. Which is funny because the game already told you with dialogue in the original, and characters like Kafei are hard to miss as you see his purple hair that reassembles the mask every time you reset. And the rumor mechanic is also optional (why would you talk to the Bombers anyway?) But people will cry about it because they think the original game was hard to figure out without a guide, because they are, well, stupid, and can't understand how game mechanics work.

I spent so much time figuring out each puzzle on my own when i was a kid, that all these years later, I remembered every single one! I still had just as much fun as the first time I played it though. Memorable characters and great story and soundtrack. Tried introducing my wife to this but she doesn't like the randomness of the solving of the puzzles. Once you know the controls what else do you need to know? You figure out what to do by exploring and interacting with the environment. That's the idea. Basically, what your suggesting is that today's younger generation don't have the brain power and intelligence to play these games like we had. That is insulting and not true. The problem is that today's games hold your hand to much. You mention Telltale's Walking Dead, that's a perfect example of a game holding your hand throughout. With each Telltale game there's less and less puzzle solving. They hardly offer a challenge at all. I'll take games like Grim Fandango over Telltale's later games every time.

The point of the remastered is to actually be able to play it, more specifically on PS4 but on newer PCs as well. There isn't much else to say about it. Why did you expect a remastered be different compared to the original? Because that's like expecting a remastered version of some album to be different than the original album when it really isn't, It's just there so we can experience it again and in better quality. And if you loved it, why change anything at all?

That section in the mining facility where you have to reposition the crane and then drop it down so you can detach the crane from the chain itself kept bugging out for some reason during my playthrough. Parts of the screen would blackout with an audio looping in the background for 2 minutes until I can control the crane again.

Really enjoyed this review, except for one thing. No offense Ryan, but I can't stand it when people complain about aspect ratios for remasters of classic games. The only way they'd be able to present this in true 16:9 is to either completely remake the game, or crop it which is a horrible idea because they'd literally be cutting out part of the picture to fit it. As much as I'd love true 16:9 for this game, it's perfectly fine the way it is.

I'm not happy with this remastered version of the classic game. There were lots of graphical oddities in places that featured animated backgrounds. Some of the still backgrounds showed obvious artifacts. There were also problems with animations all too often during my journey. All meshes remained intact (polygon-wise) but textures got reworked, although not for every mesh as some look even worse than they did back in 1998 (like Domino's headphones) because of some incorrectly mapped diffuse textures. In spite of all of this, Grim Fandango remains an exceptional title, but it's a shame that issues like those prevent this 'remastered' version from becoming a definitive one. I only feel the need to bring this things up, as reviewers seem to ignore them and I know it has happened too often before with re-releases like the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, where graphical glitches, missing textures, misspelled names and overblown bloom effects completely ruined some of the scenes. There were also major issues with the Silent Hill HD Collection, although I was spared from that since I wasn't planning on getting it after my experience with the MGS one. Major companies need to understand that remasters need bigger budgets and more time to be properly assessed in order for the effort to not be a complete waste of time! I understand it might not be economically viable, but I don't really care about that, I care about the game and would rather play the original version (which now will probably never be officially re-released digitally because of the availability of the 'new and improved' one) than one of this half-assed 'remastered' versions.

So....it's a negative to have the player figure out every puzzle? If you need help, isn't shared knowledge among players a good thing? Fromsoft seems to think so.

NightBot Ban It's not just the Souls series lad. Miyamoto made the original Legend of Zelda as complicated as he could so players would talk to each other and help each other out. It's not just Fromsoft that knows that shared knowledge is a helpful system. In games like Grim Fandango, the puzzles are what drive the gameplay along with the story, so I don't see why having the game not tell you how to do the puzzles is bad. It's up for the players to solve and figure out.

Have you actually played this game before? It's a fantastic game, but some of the puzzles can be really odd and illogical. A hint doesn't have to hold your hand, just nudge you in a direction. Without a hint, I imagine most people just resorting to online walkthroughs with the really frustrating puzzles.
@MandoMonge
@MandoMonge 3 жыл бұрын
Played it the other night and really made me think on how much more complicated games used to be. Had to resort to WAY too many walkthroughs because some puzzles required combinations of items modern games have taught me are simply not possible. Once finished I played fallen order and found myself exploring every nook and cranny of the level looking for secrets only to remember it’s a far more linear puzzle experience
@jmckendry84

But aren't these point and click games themselves very linear? Very often there's a specific combination of things you need to do in order to progress.
@sodvar5047
@sodvar5047 Жыл бұрын
@@jmckendry84 They're linear overall but what LucasArts often did is let you roam freely on a pretty big area full of separate puzzle "paths". Of course, in order to progress to the next big area, you needed to solve all of them because they were ultimately all interconnected, but this is how designers accounted for the possibility that players might get discouraged if they got stuck at one specific puzzle and weren't able to progress elsewhere.

I don't get why people are crying. They kept it as if it were new. The original. And I don't see a problem with that. The game was amazing when I was a kid and thinking abour getting it again. They seriously need new people at IGN to review games who know what the flying pancakes their talking about. Notice they downgrade every single game unless irs a Call Of Duty or Halo. What's that? I actually spelled it out instead calling it "COD"? But yeah.
