The government is reallocating tens of millions of pounds from the controversial Rwanda scheme to establish a new Border Security Command (BSC) as part of its strategy to address illegal migration.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has announced an audit of funds previously sent to Kigali, aiming to identify ways to save or recover money allocated under the previous Conservative administration.
Ms. Cooper also plans to discuss the issue of illegal migration with her European counterparts at the European Political Community Summit on 18 July.
Before the general election, Sir Keir Starmer stated that his party intended to allocate around £75 million annually to the new border scheme, redirecting funds from the now-scrapped Rwanda deportation program.
Earlier this weekend, the Prime Minister declared the Conservative-era plan to deport asylum seekers to Africa as "dead and buried."
Kevin O’Sullivan and political commentator Benedict Spence discuss Labour’s plans on border control.
