From what I heard, the imperium had an extremely hard time getting this information. Everyone that was sent never returned. Information relayed back was often hard to read due to it resembling the scrawlings of a madman rather then a formal report. Whatever they saw there clearly drove them insane. Some choice excerpts of these reports: "THE SCREAMS...THE SCREAMS...I CAN'T STOP HEARING THE SCREAMS!" "THE HORROR! THE HORROR!" "Let me return! I don't want to be here any longer! THEY'RE COMING FOR ME!" "I can't take this any longer! This will be the last report! THEY KNOW I'M HERE! HELP ME! HELP ME! HELP ME!..."

The things in 40k that are scarier than chaos, and weirder than....everything really. For when you wanna go full on grimdark...

I think these guys rival Nurgle in how disgusting they are. But I find them entertaining simply because the majority of 40k threats just want you dead. These creatures literally benefit from keeping you alive in horror and misery, it's a different dynamic but still grimdark as hell!

Well, while both are gruesome I think they are vastly different kinds of disgusting. Nurgle makes you wanna vomit, but these guys make you wanna pull out your eyeballs from terror.

On one occasion The Haemonculi of the Altered Coven, f*cked up Raven Guard Chapter pretty badly(Earlier, RG Astartes slaughtered The Altered during The Battle of Parocheus, M36)

Apart from the rare occasion when another one rises to the fore, the holy trifecta of assholery for 40k (to me) was always Lorgar, Erebus and Lucius. Of course, there's other permanent members in their clubhouse including Fulgrim, Fabius and Horus.
