This song is about a violent encounter with a male and her fear of men after, her fear of being alone but the need to be for protection. Im thankful for her music especially this album helped me get through something similar. I think she stated this album was her least favorite. I disagree because this album saved my life and helped me in so many ways a few years ago, i listened everyday after i moved to a new town and felt so alone and vulnerable, and her music matched the energy i needed to feel in synch with the world, it helped me feel safe doing ordinary things without the anxiety of pasts pain. She is a gift and i hope she never forgets when she made this art and her heart in this time. she stated in an interview that she was assaulted, and this song was kind of her way of coping with the situation. She said she spent years paranoid and frightened, and finally opted to make a song that kind of subverts her assault -- it kind of fingers the line of sounding like SHE'S the one stalking someone at night and also being stalked. The first half of the song is very narrative -- walking around at night, musing about how she can just walk up to the man and snap his neck. Sort of a reversal of power. But then, she talks about how -she- fearfully walks, staring straight ahead, fighting the urge to glance behind her, etc. However, this is still sung in sort of an ambiguous way, like she's commenting on the man she follows glancing at her, and she's staring straight ahead, focused on him. Finally, the "See you on a dark night" is pretty literal but still ambiguous, both the statement of the stalker and the stalked -- they know they'll see each other on a dark night. It's both helpless and powerful, to fit both roles. The second half is when it seems to turn to self-reflection and her fear of men. She mentions her aloneness and how it's hard to have a relationship with a man again, she can't find someone to hold her hand. But, she doesn't enjoy her fear, and she really just wants someone to give her the kick she needs to grow out of it; to look into her eyes and tell her everything is okay ("la la la la la~")

She doesn’t look behind her the entire video… even when people come up behind her, bump into her, touch her hood, etc. she won’t turn her head all the way back… except toward the end she’s in the locker room with her body already angled partially away from the camera while still looking slightly over her shoulder into it… and singing “see you on a dark night” while nodding her head… very intense. I like to think this is a challenge and a threat to her attacker that he should be the one looking over his shoulder now on a dark night. I love this video. Perfection.

@marshallleonard6673 Жыл бұрын
Yes and also it's like her statement "see you on a dark night" is directed to the men around her, the one's playing with her, the one's dancing with her, the one's she walks by, any of these men could be predators, she shows that it's not random evil people who commit assault but brothers, dads, people who's relatives would defend them and call them fun loving.

According to stats, depending where she is, there's a 9/10 probability it was a Hispanic or Bravo Mike. FtM transgenders have been shocked at how threatening men can be toward one another. I've only now realized how interesting this music video is with the songs context. Knowing she was assaulted and that this song is about feeling unsafe at night, afraid of being attacked (presumably by a man) this music video feel like confronting masculinity (as almost all of the strangers shown are men of different ages and all the shows/activities are generally considered masculine). It feels like a video of trying to almost shock therapy yourself by surrounding yourself with what scares you (like men in general after one attacks you) and learning to be comfortable in that space, both interacting with them and just as someone who happens to be existing in that same space. Edit: I have been receiving comments on this regularly for the last 3 years. They entertain me to no end. And they also make me sad. To fellow victims: you are not alone. I hope you find peace from what has happened. To the trollz: keep trolling. They make me laugh. To the hurt men defending themselves or calling me a feminist (like that's a bad thing?) or that I'm saying all men bad or whatever: 1. I never said masculinity is a bad thing. I dont believe that. It is just as important as femininity. 2. I hope that someday you realize that you truly have no idea what it's like to be a woman. That you never will. That you see women being stay at home moms (which isnt easy but youll probably never be a sahd so how would you ever know) or famous streamers or only fans girls raking in money and you think we are privileged. That feminism has given us more power than men and that our lives are easier now than yours. There is nothing further from the truth. And as long as we suffer, we will speak on it. If you don't like it, close the page or help us. Art can be interpreted in any which way you like. It can mean multiple things at once. This is a fun song to dance to so i don't blame people for not wanting to assign a dark meaning. Don't! For many this is just a dance song. But don't hate on those of us that identify with a darker meaning :). Neither of us are wrong

I love 2:52 because not only does she sort of get shoved, and the impact matches the queue for the re entry of that synth melody or harmony or w/e, but also because of the way she smiled and reacted to it, for me that's the moment where it really feels like shes gotten control back from what happened.

I’m so sorry that even happened hun, just please remember you are not alone, & you are not weak in telling someone you trust what happened, it is the first step in a inner healing that we Must take. Do not suffer silently even for 1more nano-second living in shame or fear etc. please don’t give the sicko the pleasure… Ya know cause it’s What they Do it for, the selfish & disturbing want to ruin other lives to make their own sick life seem at least “a little better than…” don’t let them win this is Chess not checkers, ya know? The Game of Life? It will benefit you greatly to take back power & then some learns new trade or hobby, look at the future as you heal you naturally will feel a new exciting reason to shine at whatever you do that’s makes you special. Smile daily & remember You have always deserved to be genuinely happy, it’s so easy to get lost in our own complex brains when trauma creates a PTSD or disorder, complex whatever they call it, you know it’s not you & laugh it off & be you true joyful spirit as Intended. Naturally.💅. Sorry I have been venting I hope I have at least given some encouraging words or advice this is why I majored in, but only recently truly witnessed first-hand & see the unfortunate effects first hand & have to now learn to live in a new healing lifestyle to erase all the malice that was laid out on many areas of my life I did t deserved either. Sorry if Im just babbling to cause I also want those seemingly wasted years of victim counseling to at least help even 1 person beside myself. Best wishes & positive vibes Yanna😃

Grimes is so underated. She made songs about tragedy and even beat a guy with her banjo because he was following her. She is an amazing role model and she uses her platform for good and speaking up about issues that are never addressed because our government is corrupt. Here we have Grimes neautralizing good and evil. Grimes you are a literal angel sent from above. I ressonaint with who you are and what you've been through. 2:52 is such a beautiful moment in the video given the subject matter. As she comes into clash with the physical strength of males during the mosh and the beat picks up as she swallowed into it, you can see her smile with abandon and roll with the punches, it’s like she is fully through being reborn from her experiences in that moment. I take the song and video as Grimes reclaiming her experience. She turns her paranoia from previous experiences with men into empowerment. Rather than seeing masculinity as something to be afraid of, she attends all these “manly” events and champions it. She overcomes a traumatizing event by putting herself within an environment that portrays masculinity in a more silly, rather than fearsome way. It’s inspiring.

It's also more broadly about how you fit into normal mainstream society when your tastes are eclectic and you're a weirdo more or less. Sometimes you can feel like a surreal ghost, which is what's portrayed in this video with her "strange" song at the most mainstream of events: a football game. As a guy I don't really relate to the women being afraid of men aspect of the song, but I absolutely pull the meaning of feeling isolated and alien

I could do a whole hour long think piece on this music video. The emotion in it is visceral. It's awkward and comfortable at the same time. She doesn't fit in, but in most of these scenes she's fitting in just fine. Interacting with people around her that sometimes don't even realize they're in a music video. It's a relatable feeling- the "not fitting in but IS somehow" and I've never seen it be depicted so perfectly imo. I wonder if anyone else thinks of their highschool experience when they see this video. The mix of the scenes with her and real people just casually dancing at a sporting event and then the shots of the posed kinda artistic locker room scenes where she's standing amongst these Adonises lifting weights is also interesting. The song/lyrics itself is also very relatable and worthy of a comment but I don't want to get into THAT on this one.. I might reply to this with my analysis. Lol... If you actually read this far into my babbling I appreciate you, and hope you have an amazing day, week, month, year and life :) Loves ya!

There’s very little comfort to find in this world, and I am deeply sorry you had to experience something so awful. I hope that you can find comfort, even if it’s in the smallest of things, and remember those positive places as you move forward in life. Stay strong, stay good, and know that this total stranger wishes you all of the best that this world can offer.

@@Markknightexeter i hate when people boil music like this down to being "80s." people only associate it with that era because of the sound selection in the songs. she led a new wave of post-punk , her entire aesthetic was very much 2020 - 2022 stylistically , comparable to the diy scenes in chicago and boston. also her first album was basically an experimental-indie album while indie was still considered experimental, if that makes sense lol

Yall, this might sound stupid, but I just realized Grimes sings this song. Like, the Grimes that just had a baby with Elon Musk. I looked her up because I saw she was a singer and I was wondering what type of music she sings. Only to realize I've been vibing to her the entire time. 🤦🏽♀️

The “see you on a dark night” actually has a double meaning, first referring to the fact that she was assaulted on a dark night and she will see ‘them’ there, but the other meaning is that she will see them on a dark night meaning at night time in her dreams, well nightmares, it’s clever.
