Cap, the A-4A/B/C only had three bomb racks but could still carry a good war load and go a good distance. The A-4E introduced two extra pylons and upgraded engines. The Pratt and Whitney JP-52 turbojet same engines in the A-6 and E/A-6B were very powerful for the A-4. The Scooter was so speedy it could hit 500 kts in most configurations. Two years ago we watched a Scooter operate with three Mirage F-1s and he had no problem keeping up with them. My friends from VMA-131 flew A-4Es and Ms until 1994. In addition to the various Close Air Support and FastFAC missions, they did a lot of Dissimilar Air Combat Training against local units flying F-16s,A-7Ks,F-4Es from various Air National Guard Units and everything in the USN,USMC and USAF.

The A4 Never got burners/reheat because it wasn't a fighter, it was an attacker. In Vietnam especially that meant it needed to Loiter for CAS missions meaning it needed to have lots of fuel and an efficient engine, which would not have been possible with an after burning engine designed for efficiency at high supersonic speeds.

The A4 DID have an air to air radar. The A4K (Kahu) of the RNZAF had the AN/APG-66 which was designed originally for the F16 A/B. Project Kahu ultimately made the RNZAF Skyhawks possibly the most lethal variant of the Skyhawk, caring Mavericks Aim 9-L and even Paveways. But even all this fancy new tech still dint add more than the Fox2s to the Skyhawks missile arsenal

Love the combination of flying a serious relatively historically accurate mission with the shenanigans of a group of guys having fun with it.

In the German airforce the Phantom was sometimes referred to as Luftverteidigungsdiesel which means air defense diesel.

Hermes and Invincible were augmented early in the war by aircraft off of Atlantic Conveyer. When she was sunk, she was operating as an auxiliary aircraft carrier with cargo containers stacked to form hanger decks for GR.3's and helos. Because it lacked the dedicated facilities for maintenance and rearming, this was not a true aircraft carrier, but it did provide an immediate source of valuable replacement aircraft that would have otherwise been thousands of miles away when needed. When she was hit by an Exocet she was operating 10 helos, having already unloaded 14 Harriers to Invincible and Hermes.

Love this time period, and the Vietnam war (technical aspects). The A-4 is one of my favorite; wish i could have worked out how to setup the A-4' brakes on the 3d pro...
