I was thinking about getting this game. Do I need a joystick or is it possible to play with a gamepad?

This is a flight combat simulator-best use a hotas along with rudder pedals to fully immerse yourself and utilize it to its full extent. Also it is very expensive for terrains and planes so prepare to open your wallet and start throwing money at it. Also you will need to devote a massive amount of time to learn the planes. Best to start with flaming cliffs 3 which is cheap and includes like 5 non clickable (low fidelity) planes.

Since it is free with a terrain and two aircraft, I would simply download it and try. You will see what @g0vernedhitman934 is talking about-He is talking about an addict (which I am). It is very easy to get addicted or absorbed in all this simulator offers. There are lots of free mods out there as well. Just be aware, many (but not all) of the free mods depend on some basic models created in purchased mods. For example, many of the free mod airplanes depend on you already having the Flaming Cliffs 3 (FC3) [soon to be Flaming Cliff 2024] mod. You do not have to have a joystick (HOTAS), but it is highly recommended. You can actually get decent using just a keyboard (there is a video of Cap flying with/against a person who only uses a keyboard and he is very capable). Welcome to the family!

this is as serious as it get's. In terms of equipment but also the learning curve is extremely ballistic. Even if you don't get as deep into it as GR does. I guess you could use a pad for just the flying but you'll need to use the keyboard a hell of a lot. It's not really a workable solution. That said, you don't need a multi1000$ professional joystick. But even a cheaper thrustmaster one will cost more than even the base game. Everything around DCS is pretty expensive. BUT for planes there are also tons of free mods, that require only a very basic module ( flaming cliffs) to work with. Many use one of it's planes as base for their modded ones). . But mod planes are rarely as in depth as a full module like this Apache one. Which tbh is actually BETTER for more casual players. But even "casual" is in big quotes for DCS.

You can play with a gamepad. I actually use both. It’s pretty easy to setup the bindings for the gamepad too

I use a dualsense controller, it works perfectly for me. Search for the tutorial ‘Tuuvas’ made, it’s extremely helpful (he also runs a discord too, and helped me with a few issues I was having). I do plan on upgrading to a HOTAS setup for the immersion. I wanted to ensure I really loved the game before a heavy HOTAS investment.

If you sync your input folder with google drive it will save your bindings then you just have to load the profile if you ever have to reinstall dcs or windows
