Apparently Robert Rodriguez had taken the film out of the reel, tied it to the back of his car and literally had it "grind" across the pavement while driving to produce that old-school grindhouse visual quality. Authenticity at its best. I've still yet to see Hobo with a Shotgun and Black Dynamite besides a few scenes though....

Seeing this in the theater was like getting on an exhilarating theme park ride. I was so goddamn excited. It was my atypical new-Tarantino-flick volcanic eruption squared. It was, also, one of those rare times in which I knew, long before it opened, that this film was not gonna disappoint. So, I overloaded on memorabilia. The first show time, Friday April 6th, 2007 at 10:30 a.m; I was in the theater lobby all decked out in a GRINDHOUSE t-shirt & DEATH PROOF shoes(that were incredibly uncomfortable). My boys weren't gonna let us down. And they didn't. Of course they didn't. It was audiences that let THEM down. Nobody went to see it. Didn't even give it a shot. Broke my heart so much I wrote a letter to the editor of my city newspaper. And this fucking town shit all over it and me. How dare I stand up for that movie. Those people hated something that they'd never seen. Who knew they spoke for the nation? But fuck em if they can't have fun. GRINDHOUSE is the definition of why we go to & absolutely adore the movies. It's probably the greatest love letter ever written.

ok well maybe not that low but some of the stuff in those movies very lazy. particularly effects wise, with crap cgi and fake cigarette burns. also the probelm with old grindhouse movies could also be from bad writing and directon but with master directors tarantino and rodriguez, even with a grindhouse budget could make a great film that lives up to the poster

In my opinion, the closest thing we got to a grindhouse (-ish) franchise was the 2007 double feature, hobo with a shotgun, machete and machete kills, and black dynamite (probably the only film not related to the previous films mentioned above). With that being said, TO THIS DAY, I still keep my fingers crossed and sincerely hope that the powers that be in Hollywood will decide to revisit the grindhouse genre once again someday. And maybe Warner Bros, Universal,Lionsgate,A24, or maybe even blumhouse will be at the helm this time (since dimension and the weinstein company are no longer in business). Hell, at this point I'll even take seeing a giallo film and an oz-ploitation movie as the next double feature if it means grindhouse has finally returned to theaters

Some friends called me up on spring day in 2007 and said "let's go see a movie tonight". The wife said to go have fun with your friends and so I went. I had been pretty busy with work and an toddler so I didn't know about the movie. Some 4 hours later I was completely taken by the entire experience. I can't think of any other movie I've ever seen which hit me like that. I thought it was a blast and while it is not for everyone it was certainly exactly what a B horror double feature should be.

Planet Terror is one of my favorites. I've watched it countless times and it jacks me up. Punchy dialog, colorful characters, bloody action, well-blended effects and an awesome soundtrack. Even on its own, I still love it to death. Death Proof is equally good. Perhaps more so in some respects just from how absolutely faithful Tarantino was to replicating the feel, look and crudity of the era's films. While I would've loved seeing them together at once, they remain excellent viewing separately.

Funny you mention Hobo With A Shotgun. It actually started it's existence as a faux trailer that was submitted to a competition for the film Grindhouse, and it ended up winning, with the trailer being featured in the Canadian release of the film. It got such a positive response from the faux trailer, the filmmakers ended up just making it into its own film.

I never really connected Grindhouse to stuff like Kung Fury, though I guess it makes sense. I always assumed it was just the endless 80's/90's nostalgia and using computers for everything to get a film out there. I guess spiritually they are connected but I wonder if the creators of Kung Fury and Turbo Kid would site Groundhouse as an influence.

I was super lucky. Not only did I get to see it as a double-billing in the theater, as intended with fake trailers and everything, I got to see it with an older lady friend who grew up seeing real Grindhouse double bills growing up in the early 70's in rural Maine. We saw it in a tiny, indie cinema packed with Tarantino fans--everyone drinking beer and scarfing pizza. It's hard to imagine a better way to see it than with a tattoo'd biker chick who was enjoying the hell out of every second. One of the things I remember most was, while watching Planet Terror I was thinking, "I'm having so much gawddamn fun! How is Tarantino going to top this?!" I was then blown away by Deathproof which turned out to be a real cinematic effort which built and built and cranked up the tension until I was on the edge of my seat. Russell was SUCH a great villain that when the girls finally round-robin kicked his ass, the entire theater jumped to their feet and cheered. Grindhouse was, indeed, one of the greatest theater-going experiences of my life. It's actually very difficult to recall any other that topped it. (Though Dredd and Edge of Tomorrow were also great)

I was 21 going on 22 when I saw GRINDHOUSE on the big screen in Asheville at the now-long-gone Beaucatcher Cinema 7 directly across from the Asheville Mall in its original double-feature format and my God, it was one of the best big-screen viewing pleasures of my life! Save the Grindhouse... SAVE THE DREAM!

Grindhouse was the most fun movie experience I've ever had. Next would be seeing Cabin Fever with five friends, and being the only ones in the theatre, so it was basically an MST3K experience.

Awesome video, Rossatron! As usual, I couldn't agree more with your views. A lot of people have bashed the grindhouse sub-genre that was created in the wake of the Grindhouse double-feature. I, personally, have loved the films I've seen that were inspired by it. Gonzo, in the best sense of the word!

Man, initially, I couldn't believe that it's been a decade since Grindhouse came out, but that I thought back, and yeah, I've done a lot of stuff since it was released.

I'm starting my own exploitation reviews for my channel starting with Grindhouse. I will only be reviewing the films separately since I've only seen the them separately although I am planning to watch the double feature version soon. I feel that this video will help me get started with my review. Thank you so much

great retrospective dude grindhouse was and still is my favorite movie of all time. I saw it originally in theater on my 18th birthday back in the day, and it turned me on to double features and a whole bunch of b movies like hobo with a shotgun. black dynamite. and machete. all these flicks are wicked there is a place for these movies, thanks for the awesome video.

I absolutely loved "Grindhouse". A love letter to badass cinema by Tarantino and Rodriguez. Went to see it with a couple of friends and we loved it. "Grindhouse" was not just a movie, but more of an experience. A great moviegoing experience that needed to be scene in theater. Left the theater with a smile on my face. This movie needs to be seen as a double feature. My favorite movie in the last 15 years.

Me and a buddy of mine went to see this in the theater when it was released. I remember thinking what a great deal 2 movies for the price of one. I must admit I thought Death Proof was pretty hard to get though until we get to the car chase. The car chase was worth the price of admission though. The engine sound with the theater sound system was bad ass.

Great video man. I totally agree, seeing both movies in the theater was so much fun. A great experience. I would love to see a sequel made by Tarantino and Rodriguez.

What are some of the other movies that you used clips for i notice the obvious ones from QT/RR's Grindhouse, Bitch Slap, Blood Drive, and Kung Fury but some of the others look fun

Saw the theatrical cut the first night it was released in theaters way back when. While I loved it- and still do- I couldn't help but think, "man...Troma has been doing this for YEARS!" Where's the Troma love??? This is their specialty.

I was disappointed when they were released on DVD that Planet Terror didn't have the "missing reel" restored like was done with Death Proof. I still want to know why it went from a few zombie encounters to everything exploding all over the place.

Interesting that the KZbin algorithm delivered this video to me mere days after I decided to replicat my Grindhouse experience of 2007 by watching both movies plus the fake trailers (thanks again KZbin). It really is an extremely interesting experience when you look at it all from a historical and film making perspective. Both movies are far from perfect, but together with the trailers you really get that cheap sleazy '70s vibe that the directors were going for, and it really is a lot of fun.

After seeing Grindhouse and loving every minute of it, I started watching the films that inspired it. Some are pretty bad, but most are, at the very least, so bad they're good and a fun way to pass the time.

I love Grindhouse. Watched it at least 5 or 6 times in the theater. I have no idea why it flopped in theaters, except that the general public had no idea what to think of it. All the audience had to do was sit back and enjoy the craziness.

The irony I just saw both planet terror and death proof recently. I do have to say that death proof is in many ways superior to Planet Terror. But it is still nice to have both and not only that but to see Robert Rodriguez violent bloody work and not his family children films.
