And I totally agree....I don't like his cameo's in any of the movies. It always seems so forced into the movie even if there's no need for the character at all and his acting is just....shitty. The worst example to me is in Django Unchained.

While Tarantino has so many good movies, this is one of his tightest scripts for sure. And the soundtrack is one of the only ones I actually bought when the movie came out. It's so good.

Don't feel bad, the movie cleverly uses Kurt's natural likeability to fool you in the beginning. We never get an origin for Stuntman Mike's obsession, but given the pictures of past victims over the credits it seems he's been doing this for decades, so I think it started when he was still making movies. I think maybe he was driving for a stunt and accidentally killed some actress and I guess he got a taste for it. He also obviously resents his own aging and so seeks to destroy youth and beauty as an act of revenge. The coolest thing about the movie though is the woman from New Zealand. She's a real stunt woman with a long list of credits who specializes in car stunts, and to an extent the movie was made for her.

She was Uma Thurman's stunt woman for Kill Bill, and before that she was one of Lucy Lawless's stunt doubles in Xena. Zoe Bell absolutely deserves so much credit in this industry.

What made this so great was that Kurt Russell always plays a good guy. And yes, in the beginning, he's the character you like. Right up until he says "you're going to have to start getting scared, immediately".

25:03 - "Hey good looking, be back to pick you up later!" I actually remember that line - it's from a late 70's TV commercial for "Mr. Microphone" (it was a microphone that allowed you to broadcast your voice over FM radio). kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqKso62hhamnqM0

That's Michael Parks playing the sheriff. He also plays the sheriff in Kill Bill & later returns as the pimp with the accent in Kill Bill vol. 2. He may appear as a sheriff in a 3rd Tarantino film.....but I can't recall offhand. In the 1960s, he starred in a TV series called 'Then Came Bronson'. And Zoe Bell was the stuntwoman for Uma Thurmond in the Kill Bill movies.

some interview with Tarantino before this was made, he said his idea for it was a slasher movie with cars. after it came out he'd said the slasher genre was difficult to crack, so this turned into what we saw. i do love that Michael Parks' texas ranger is a recurring thread through Rodriguez and Tarantino movies.

The reason why this movie jumps around and planet terror has the missing real gag is because Grindhouse movies were exploitation movies that played in really cheap theaters back in the 60s and 70s and both of these movies are homage to those types of films

Also, the way the title "Quentin Tarentino's Thunder Bolt" appears on screen and cuts immediately to a simple, grainy white-on-black title screen that says "Death Proof" is a nod to the way grindhouse movies were released and/or re-released under a variety of names.

I lived in Austin for 12 years and managed the pizza place behind the car when you referenced Halloween. Robert Rodrigues lived down the street from me and saw him out a few times. Super nice guy. It’s weird to see my old hood in movies but I’m a Georgia boy now. That “hold tight” crash scene when I saw it in the theater was probably the first time in any movie where I just didn’t believe it really happened and wished I could rewind the movie 😂 Not his best, the dialogue is a little much but still was very impactful

If you get a chance, to complete the "Grindhouse" experience, check out the faux movie trailers that accompanied the movies: - "Machete" directed by Robert Rodriguez (and later made into a full length film) - "Werewolf Women of the SS" directed by Rob Zombie - "Don't" directed by Edgar Wright - "Thanksgiving" directed by Eli Roth - "Hobo with a Shotgun" I didn't see this one when I saw "Grindhouse" in the theater but it was included in some screenings. The makers of the trailer had won a trailer contest. "Hobo with a Shotgun", like "Machete" was also later made into a full length feature film.

While DP is not Tarantino’s top work, it holds strong as a film that, not my words, has been called a B movie. It’s never revealed why Stuntman Mike does what he does. Tarantino’s films are unique in that way that the audiences open to interpretation of why EG one does what they do.

Great reaction, simply because of the last section of the movie and your reaction to it. Wow. Yeah, I was wondering the whole time: "why does she think he's their Dad?" LOL. Listen: I had the SAME problem with the writing in this one before I accepted that the dialog with the girls is hyper-stylized. It's not supposed to be "realism" acting/dialog. Your cheering at the end was so infectious and palpable. I felt the same way when I first saw it, your entire reaction (minus the Dad comments! lol). I stayed away from this movie at first - as did most people. I didn't like Kill Bill much so I got off the Tarantino train temporarily. (Jackie Brown is my favorite. Have you seen that one? 1997? Great movie, check that one out.). Anyways, a couple of years later a friend put it on and I really loved it. (Both Planet Terror and Death Proof.) PS: I don't know what you mean by which was done chronologically. They were both released together, Planet Terror, then Death Proof (plus the "previews").

Just a wonderful, animated reaction from being mostly subdued for most of film. I so glad you got a resolution to the plot you wanted. I have a pet theory about the story if you reverse the time line of the 2 stories instead of 14 months later it is 14 months before that Stuntman Mike is killed and it is actually his vengeful sprit at the start. I saw these films as double Bill in cinema when released but can't remember much other than really liking them. I preferred Planet Terror then but Deathproof now. The films that came from "Fake" trailers that accompany grindhouse Machete and Hobo With A Shotgun you should check them

Grindhouse: Death Proof (2007) Cheers, Angel. The woods are lovely, dark, and deep. And I have promises to keep. Miles to go before I sleep. Did you hear me, Angel? Miles to go, before you sleep. So while I finish my nacho grande platter, let me dig into my back pocket and grab my Little Black Book, so I can tell you all these wonderful facts and if you're in a hurry, then you're chariot awaits, M'lady. •So the title, Death Proof, comes from a drunken conversation with Sean Penn one night in a hotel lounge. The story goes that Tarantino was interested in buying a new car with high safety standards because he didn't want to die in a car accident, so Sean Penn pointed out that you could give any car to a stunt team and they can modify and reinforce it, making it "death proof" for between $10,000 to $15,000. Tarantino loved the idea of a death proof car and kept it in the back of his head for later. •While Planet Terror had all of their visual scratches and drops added digitally, Tarantino physically scratched up his film for the authentic old reel look. •Up until this point, Zöe Bell had been a stunt woman who made a great impression on Tarantino when she doubled for Uma Thurman on the Kill Bill films. When Tarantino told her that she was going to be in Death Proof, Zöe assumed that she meant as a stunt double or a background character and didn't realize she was the star until her name was listed on the poster. Bell still wanted to do all of her own stunts and Tarantino honored her request. •Rosario Dawson loved being in the car for the stunts that she requested to be in the car even for the exterior shots when she wasn't on camera. •The poem that Jungle Julia has her listeners recite is an excerpt of "Stopping by woods on a snowy evening" by Robert Frost. •If you look in the background during the lap dance, you'll see the crazy babysitter twins as extras and the guy in the red shirt is played by longtime collaborator and QT bestie, director Eli Roth. •When Warren is talking to the girls about shows that stuntman Mike appearedin, he named drops the "High Chaparral" and the "Virginian", which are both TV shows that Kurt Russell actually appeared in. •While Kurt Russell did a great job as Mike, some other notable names that were up for the role included John Travolta, Ron Perlman, Stallone, Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis (who ended up appearing in Planet Terror). In fact, Rourke was Tarantino's personal choice, with the actor very interested in the part as well but due to his agents playing extreme hardball on getting a bigger payday, Tarantino had no choice but to move on and followed Rodriguez's advice and casted Russell instead. •While the car on the poster is a 69 Camaro, Mike actually drives both a 1970 Chevy Nova and a 69 Charger. Russell didn't require any driving lessons for the cars as he had already perfected his driving skills prior to casting. •In the original theatrical cut, the lap dance scene itself was actually cut, even though it was heavily promoted in trailers. I remember bring upset cause I really dig Vanessa Ferlito.

These movies got a lot of hate when they came out. But I don't think many people understood what a grindhouse movie was. Even some critics didn't "get it". Both movies were exactly what they were intended to be: trashy exploitation flicks. An homage to b-movies in general. I really liked this one, but for me to love it, it would have to lose 15-20 minutes. IMO, Tarantino was a little too in love with his own dialog. That said, the payoff is so good! An all practical car chase, no CGI at all. Rosario Dawson and Tracie Thoms were great. Zoe Bell being.. well Zoe Bell. Kurt Russell's playing Stuntman Mike as a spineless coward. What a climax! 🥰🥰 But the real question is: Whatever happened to Lee (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? One theory was that she ended up in an Eli Roth movie. 😨

The first half of this movie is at the bottom of my Tarantino list, but the second half is near the top! I think the first girls are written to be shallow and annoying to set up a contrast with the second group. On the surface they are very similar, and that's what Stuntman Mike sees, but they are fundamentally different types of women. Looks can be deceiving!

I used to avoid this movie because I totally forgot about the second half... All I remembered was the first half and why ... and I mean WHY?!? ... would I want to watch THAT again? Thanks for reminding me of the complete and total satisfaction built into the conclusion. Now let me say the four words that connect the Grindhouse movies, the From Dusk till Dawn movies and the Kill Bill movies... Texas... Ranger... Earl... McGraw... Michael Parks plays the same character and is the connective tissue in these stories that have got to take place in completely different timelines within this Tarantino multiverse. These franchises also are part of the "Movie Movie" portion of the TCU [Tarantino Cinematic Universe] which, of course, is a fictional universe that takes place within the Realer than Real portion of the TCU... I think that's how it goes... It's hard to tell since my head starts spinning [O-o] and the migraine kicks [@-@] in anytime I think too hard on the subject... Anyway the connections between the Tarantino movies is kinda fun to delve into ... in small doses. In conclusion, I wanted to say that I dug the reactions (just watched both of your Grindhouse videos) and I really like your cat... Reminds me of my old buddy Hobbs. Cheers!

You had asked what it was like in theaters between the two features. The end credits for "Planet Terror" were very much an intermission (house lights came up, staff rolled up trash bins to the doors for people to toss garbage away), before jumping right into the fake trailers and carrying on. It really was a fun time being transported back to the days of grindhouse double bills. As for "Death Proof" itself, the best praise I can give it is in agreeing with you wholeheartedly that while the setup is very much exploitative and creepy, the payoff is deeply satisfying. Few revenge flicks from the era that Tarantino set out to pay homage to delivered retribution that felt so highly enjoyable to watch. Again, it's the lesser of the two movies in my book, but as a part of the full package it works nicely. Heck, I am not a fan of Rose McGowan at all (for personal reasons), yet I can thoroughly enjoy these movies and everything they have to offer in spite of her presence. I am still a bit surprised to this day that "Hobo with a Shotgun" and "Machete" never played on a Grindhouse double bill together. They both were movies that started out as faux trailers.

Every Tarantino movie is better than 90% of all movies. Definitely check out the hateful eight if you want another banging Kurt Russell performance

This is regarded as Tarantino’s worst movie. By most, I like the second half of this. The first half was painful to sit through in the theater. Yet it’s still a guilty pleasure to watch from time to time.

I have always felt that the first half felt king and dragged out. They were trying to get us invested in the female characters who they knew would be killed. It felt forced and all the dialogue unnecessary and added nothing to the story atche.
