For those who didn't know, RoboCop 2 had a rocky production. It was initially meant to be written and directed by Tim Hunter, who dropped out due to creative differences. He wanted the movie to have characters feel emotionally realistic and tackle themes more close to home like his other films but the studio just wanted a summer action movie. Frank Miller was brought in to pen the script, with Irvin Kershner directing. Even then, the script was constantly being revised during production, with scenes being added and dropped as shooting went on. Lewis was originally around to lend Murphy a hand. Nancy Allen has said in interviews that the original script featured her character prominently, but the re-writes diminished her role. At one point, Lewis takes up a collection and visits the OCP headquarters to talk with Dr. Faxx about fixing RoboCop after being disassembled by Cain and his gang. Later, she helps her robo-partner snap out of it after he has a confrontation with his former wife. (Which I'll get to.) There was also a scene where RoboCop and Lewis break into Faxx's office and discover the blueprints for RoboCop 2. During the brewery shootout, Lewis gets into a fight with Catzo, Cain's right hand man. One deleted scene filmed had Cain and Angie visit OCP headquarters, and Cain's encounter with Dr. Faxx, and he stares face-to-face with the gray Robo-armor from the original movie on display. The original script also dove deeper into RoboCop's psyche. The movie attempts to explore how RoboCop has become more human since the ending of the first, but the subplot is quickly dropped. In the scene where Robocop is pulled apart by the gang, he visions himself visiting Murphy's grave with the scene cutting back and forth of him masked and unmasked in a surreal way. Also, the novelization that utilized the original script had a better explanation for why RoboCop was waging a war on Nuke. Seeing the crumbling state of the city and how so much of the youth is hooked on Nuke has him worried that his son will end up like Hobb, corrupted by vice and crime. And the scene where RoboCop encounters his former wife happens much later in the book but after being told by the lawyers to stay away from her, RoboCop drives to a junkyard to ponder what he has become. "He closed his eyes and daydreamed, seeing himself frozen solid by rust. He envisioned the mighty magnets lifting his long out-modeled, creaky, corroded body toward the conveyor belt. The conveyor accepting the offering without question. The whining, flailing machine nourished itself on Robo's body, tearing it to pieces with rotating, razor-sharp teeth." Fortunately, Lewis arrives to snap RoboCop out of his suicidal thoughts and remind him of who he is. And also, in the aftermath of the fight between him and RoboCop 2, Murphy notices his son amongst the crowd, and does the TJ Lazer gun-twirl to let him know that everything's alright and smiles. There are so many scenes changed and altered that it made the sequel become a middle-of-the-road movie. You can tell the film had the right ingredients, but someone pissed in the recipe. It's clearly not a bad movie, but I feel it's just disappointing. And I think that hurts more than just being a bad movie; to see the potential put to waste. And the novelization/original script showed that potential of being as worthy as the original. 😞

Funny thing about the scene where Cain breaks the actress and tosses her down, when it happened everyone on set was in horror, as they all thought that she had actually broken her neck and was dead... thing is, she was by trade a dancer and through the years of training, her head was able to turn further than normal. When the commotion started she sat up and asked of she had messed up the shot, nuch to the relief of everyone there 😂

I agree that the visuals leveled up from the first movie. Future Detroit looked more inhabited and felt more dystopian. We got a quick Robocop vs Ed 209 skirmish in the first movie, but the extended battle sequence between Robocop and Robocop 2.0/Cain was so much more satisfying. It's essentially an anime-style mech battle brought to life with Phil Tippet's glorious stop motion FX, the last time he used that technique before CG. (Cain BTW is Tom Noonan who was in "Manhunter" the first Hannibal Lecter movie and "Last Action Hero" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Charles Dance.) Unfortunately, Frank Miller's original script was so heavily altered by the studio that he swore off Hollywood for over a decade until Robert Rodriguez convinced him to come out to his Texas studio to show him tests he'd done for Sin City. 34:42 That's Frank Miller in a cameo as the Nuke chemist

Yup. He co-wrote the second (with Walon "The Wild Bunch" Green) and third (with Fred "Monster Squad" Dekker) Robocop films, due to his work on "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns". He wasn't happy with the end product. That's why he created the Sin City comic book series.

Aw, awesome. I was hoping you'd watch it and have fun with it. And yeah RoboCain was a very cool design and scarier than ED-209. I do wish it had more with Robo's wife but the scene we got was great and yeah the screenplay was a bit messy but I still really enjoy this film and have watched it a whole lot. And Peter Weller absolutely nails it again and his voice is perfect. I sometimes quote from this film such as the "We can't have that!" and "I'm...having...trouble" :) You mentioned RoboCop figures which I found fun cos I have a RoboCop figure from Mafex right here on my desk which is awesome. Actually it's the RoboCop 2 version, so it's got the bluer colour scheme and various accessories including Cain's brain that RoboCop removes from RoboCain before smashing it, a sachet of Nuke, and even the wrench RoboCop uses on his helmet in the final shot. :) There are cheaper figures such as those by NECA but they aren't as well articulated but worth it if you just want to display it as is. The Mafex figure is capable of doing almost every iconic pose which is why I prefer it. :) Also Doctor Who references? I've had my RoboCop emerge from my TARDIS toy once (well it IS a police box and is able to go to the future). :)

It is so funny you named those quotes...even though I've been sick the past days, I have literally been saying those quotes out loud, just by myself and to my cat. I love them SO much. Hahaha. You have a Robocop figure?!? That's awesome, and I 100% will be getting myself one sometime. Yours sounds so, so cool. Love the details! lol AND you've had it emerge from your TARDIS before? Okay, that is perfect. I can't wait until you watch my Dredd reaction coming out soon...I mention something similar at the end. lol I'm so happy you liked and got the Doctor Who references. I didn't realize how many times I referenced it, until I was editing. I was like, oh geeze, if no one watches Doctor Who this might be horrid. lol Thanks again! See you for the next video!

@@AngelGroves Aw thanks and you are welcome. By the way after thinking about it, the NECA RoboCops are probably the best to start with. They're easy to find and the newest ones have an alternate unmasked Robo head (after finally getting Peter Weller's likeness rights) and there's a deluxe version that includes his chair too. Mafex have got Weller's likeness too recently and are releasing unmasked versions of their figures but that's next year and you don't get the helmeted head that you get with their older ones so yeah, NECA's are more affordable if you don't care so much about a ton of articulation or extra hands and accessories. I really liked that they messed up his programming in this, because when he fried himself and got rid of all of his directives, that meant he really is Murphy again. Not fully, because his memories were erased, but he still remembers some. He's more of an augmented human being after that, which I really like. The most tragic character in this film is actually Hob, (Played brilliantly by Gabriel Damon) because he's so smart for his age. (The smart kid in the film) If he hadn't found his way into crime, his character could have really done something amazing. It mirrors real life in that way, because there are often some truly extraordinarily gifted people ruined by crime. Cain's design was interesting, but I hate his itty bitty legs that wouldn't be able to support the weight of his massive upper body. That could have been a purposeful choice, because of most heroes having a big upper body and little lower body. A way of reversing it. I'm one of those people that enjoys this film as well. Not as good as the original, but it has it's place for sure. The third one is....rough though. Just warning you now.
@AngelGroves2 жыл бұрын
YEESSS. So, so true (about him taking out ALL the directives). I liked that a lot as well. You can immediately tell the difference in him too. It's so cool. Also, oh my gosh, yes, Gabriel Damon (who I've already learned more about, now, from reading comments!), did a really terrific job...so terrific I was literally convinced he was a man stuck in a kids body for half of the movie. I am really impressed by his acting, and he carried the character's story well. Thank you for all the info and for your comment in general; I'm glad you enjoy the movie for what it is too. :) Absolutely still has its place. And no worries...I'll be staying away from the third, for now. lol Thanks, again!
@leperwolf72872 жыл бұрын
The numbers on the directives were up to 250 and likely were still counting. The assistant saying "He must be going out of his mind" is correct. These directives he has to follow since they are his program and more than likely several of them contradict each other. Unlike regular humans who can take or throwaway information at will, he can't.
@shainewhite27812 жыл бұрын
The film was a moderate box office success, making $45 million dollars against a $30 million dollar budget. However, it received mixed reviews by Critics, with Roger Ebert calling it "the perfect satire that fails at every turn and that the little kid, Hobb, played by Gabriel Damon, swears a lot in this movie, you don't know if y learned it from Eddie Murphy or the screenwriters." It has gained a cult following. Originally, it called "ROBOCOP: Corporate Wars," where it was going to have RoboCop blown up by a car bomb, and 60 years later, OCP has ruled the world, while other corporations try to muscle in, until RoboCop gets brought back to life to bring justice to the streets once again and put an end to OCP for good.

I dont think this sequel is inferior to the first, at all. It has that Paul Verhoeven wit, the social critique (damn, that looked like today's Chicago, dont you think?). The cast was phenomenal even with many unknown actors, the music was on point, and the direction was tight. You will looove Tom Noonan in Manhunter!

The first 2 Robocop films are actually scary on how right they were about what our society could devolve into (and in many cases it HAS become that way). Mega-corporations owning/controlling everything, drug epidemics, constant strikes (I worry that one day cops will indeed need to go on strike or something.) I mean.... yikes. Anyway, a quick tangent on a scene that made me think: on 31:22 to 31:39 : this film (made in 1990 and via Murphy's malfunctioning behavior) kinda gave us a glimpse on how ineffective and harmful "permissive parenting" is. I feel like a lot of parents nowadays (and since the mid 2000s) have turned into this kind of "buddy" parental figure, instead of actually.... parenting. The scene immediately follows by showing the kids acting out and misbehaving. And if that weren't enough, Robocop then proceeds to shoot a guy for smoking in public (!!), which to me is another satirical commentary on how the priorities of authority figures are completely misaligned with reality. To me, all these moments in the films, are scathing reviews of our society. Not to mention the ads, etc.

Frank Miller blew up inside Cain's drug lab when they raided the base. :D Peter Weller also did Batman's voice in the Dark Knight Returns animated movies. 2 parts. You should watch them on here, a few reactors have already :) It's what the Cavill/Assfleck Vs film was loosely based on/inspired by. Oh and if you like killer robot films, there's always Death Machine. Stars Brad Dourif (Child's Play((Chucky's voice) Lord of the Rings Two Towers and Return of the King as that Wormtongue guy (Assuming you've seen them but no spoilers in case you haven't) He was in one few over the cuckoo's nest too. Anyway, it's great and heavily features the big killer robot and Dourif all but playing his own version of the Joker :D

Regarding the future of RoboCop, there was a rumour earlier this year that Chris Evans was in negotiations to play Murphy in RoboCop Returns; which would be a rebooted sequel to the original. However, this project has been in development hell for awhile ever since Peter Weller passed on reprising his role (probably due to age) which then made Neill Blomkamp (District 9 director) leave the project shortly after. There was another director who took the reins (Abe Forsythe), but to my knowledge nothing has been updated and has been in limbo for awhile now. But not all is lost because if you're a gamer, Peter Weller came back to do the voice of Murphy in the upcoming RoboCop: Rogue City game which is coming out next summer on all consoles...;) Great reaction, btw! 😊

Wow! This is my favourite Robocop 2 reaction. I'm so happy you can see the greatness in this movie, despite its flaws. It cops so much unnecessary flack. Clearly it doesn't match the first, but my god it's a fun wild ride. In terms of Hob (the child), he was being groomed by Cain to be the next leader. That's why he took over the job so well. There's a novelization of the movie, and they actually go more in depth with Hob and the idea of recruiting children into the gang. There's actually other child characters, but Hob was the only one that made it into the film. Robocop 3 isn't a terrible story, but the execution is what really fails it. It is severely watered down for family audiences. There's no Peter Weller. The ONLY reason to watch it is for Lewis (Nancy Allen does return). She's great as usual. Reed also has a bigger role in 3 and does a good job too. But otherwise, the movie is pretty bad. Watch at your own risk
