LOL thanks buddy! This video was brutal to shoot solo using my phone. Bad focus, trying to stay in frame, and not destroy the nib all at once. Don't think I managed to do any of the above very well LOL!

omg i did it DB! my preppy is writing like your cursive italic! Still needs a touch up but the contrast is awesome! Thank you. Dollar store nail files FTW! Slow and steady's the way to go. Started with 2000 grit sandpaper then onto the nail file. The key is maintaining the rectangular shape and just gently rounding off the edges so they don't bite. If you go to far it ruins the contrast.

Thank you... Really enjoyed learning by watching your techniques :-). I've cautiously/ nervously tuned, smoothed or shaped problematic classic vintage nibs, but only one modern expensive nib--the paper-flooding (incontinent) Visconti Homo Sapiens palladium nib. Luckily, most nibs ended my mis-treatments? pleasurably improved. IMHO, it's important to analyze the nib's exact problem(s), use that loupe, go slowly, correct, test and retest.

IMHO, this is one of the best/easiest nib grinding diy videos on the YT, the Great if you do a sketch of what a default #6,#8 nib initially looks like and what is the desired end objective - because there are various different shapes- and then a short note as whats our exact plan to scrape off...left tip, right tip, sharp, flat, cut, stub, round, polish..? Thanks in advance

This was my first video on nib grinding. On my channel I have updated videos which are much better to give more detail: kzbin.info/aero/PL6RAe6vPmtDin2cIizbra73IJCrZHLXs6

Listened to your advice and didn't obey ;) Just finished my first nib violation under my Olympus scope and Spyderco stones on a fine Sheaffer nib yesterday. Turned out pretty well and only needs that final polish to be perfect. Wet and juicy writing with a nice ratio between the directions.

Sounds like it went well for your first go. Just keep practicing. You can pick up Jinhao nibs for like $1 a piece and are great to get some experience with and learn from

@@Doodlebud I have a bunch of them coming in the mail, having good optics really helped me. The old Olympus SZ40 gives me good enough image to see even the smallest scratches and edges.

You have some guts grinding a 149 on your own! I have a spare TWSBI M nib I dislike so I was about to use a nail buffer just as you are lol
@Doodlebud
@Doodlebud 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I definitely took my time more on this nib than my others I've done. The buffer is just for a bit of smoothing. The shape comes from using my whetstones. My first nibs I did were on $3-10 pens.

I love your laughing 😆. I do this with cheap Chinese nibs, only with micromesh and it works mostly, sometimes better than a professional grinded nib - and if I ruined it, it about one €.

Gotta have fun! I decided to try this after I paid for someone to grind my MB 149 & they did a very poor job. So what the heck, might as well learn to do it myself

I also stone sharpen my knives and I was gritting my teeth a lot (sorry for the pun). I appreciate you trying to do this all on camera with the angles, but I think it would be acceptable to do a bit out of the line of direct site of the camera making sure you got the best angle on the stone (laying it flat on the bench) for the best possible result. I still mess up my knives so I will not be trying this anytime soon LOL,

Yeah I wanted to do a start to finish uncut type video but not so good.... The one I did on the muji nib was done with better close ups to capture the escense of the process and it turned out great. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6CyZqRvnbmWjtE
