How do you know if a rock is an agate before cutting/grinding? I mean when you find them in nature

The agates in my area have a certain look on the outside. Sometimes agates like from Montana would have windows that you could see banding etc. sometimes you can't tell at all until you cut it open though which makes it very exciting 😁
