I am a beginner. thank you for posting instructional videos and tips and tricks to help with the craft!! I am on knife #2. finally found a hobby where perfectionism and ocd tendencies are not a hindrance :D I can actually embrace that urge to improve on "already good" results and feel like its worth it and not just extra torture lol.

freehand grinding is still an absolutely invaluable skill. and do not think a jig takes all the skill out of it, you can still mess up a bevel. there are times when a jig wont work, and freehand is only option. having both skills at your disposal is imperative to make any necessary shape or design. For example, I do not think a jig would work for a karambit. freehand is the only option there 'afaik'

The steel is already hardened, it leaves a very faint line only. The contrast leaves a mark but won’t always stay on so the light scratch that is left means I always have a reference mark.

The centre scribe is one I bought a few years back at a knife show no particular brand. The grinder is an 84 Engineering grinder, mine is a 60 but honestly next time I would go the 84 Engineering 72”. File guides and bevel jig are Nordic edge products. Have a look at the long form videos I have on bevel grinding and I go into some more detail.

Hey Sher, I am sticking to the fixed blade for now, folders need extra equipment that I don't want to buy in 240volt and then have to either remotor or find a work around for later. My first big $ when I can get it would be a water jet CNC for cut out but waiting to get it either in 110V or 220V. It would mean knives cut out much faster without the wear and tear that my bandsaw put on the body.

Easiest way... Buy expensive grinder, manufacture, or buy jig, achieve easiest bevels.
@DownunderFarmandForge
@DownunderFarmandForge 19 күн бұрын
Yup unfortunately easy takes money as simple as that. Cheap options, file by hand with or without a jig or freehand with an angle grinder, both are hard work and even harder to get a saleable quality knife.
@RyanBarnes
@RyanBarnes 19 күн бұрын
@@DownunderFarmandForge this is absolutely true. The hard part of all of the methods to make easy, is to make what we can, to earn enough to buy what makes things easier.
@DownunderFarmandForge
@DownunderFarmandForge 10 күн бұрын
I have seen all sorts of methods used do do it to get to the expensive grinder part, all comes down to how much free cash you can put in, how much sweat you are willing to put in or how dodgy a setup you are willing to use. My shoulder has been reconstructed 4 times so filing just isn't and option for me, freehanding an angle grinder I could probably manage but to sketchy for me, one wrong move and you ruin your work. Upside down belt sander in a vise, again a bit sketchy but possible, 1x30 beltgrinder is what a lot of people start with, multitool attachment to a benchgrinder is where I started, I then went on to a conversion for the multitool to a 2x48 that used to be available here in Australia, then finally on to the 2x60 Shopmaster from 84 Engineering. Even still I am looking to upgrade to a 2x72 when I move to the States. Just start where budget and ease of use meet for you and take it from there, learn the tools and the methods that work and honestly if the hobby is for you before drooping too much coin and see how it goes.

Mate the journey of One Thousand miles starts with one step. I have made a few hundred knives at this point but did not start at the top of the range equipment and still not using my dream equipment. Work with what you have until you know what you want to do and how to do it with what you have, then take the next step when you can afford it and again learn the process. You improve as you go along, learn what equipment will help you to make the next step and move on each one step at a time. I still spend money on new equipment that I wasn't thinking about when I see something handy that will improve my process, and I am never shy about taking classes and being the student to someone who knows things I don't. The Paradox of KZbin is you have to be the expert on what you are showing people or you will get called out, heck sometime you do anyway, but you have to keep learning so you have something new to show or it gets stale.

I use jigs for straight bevels, especially when I have a small production run, complex grinds I do by hand. I do it as a hobby/business. If I was doing it full time I would look for more automation, water jet to cut blanks etc. not a lack of skill as I can certainly do it by hand but a quicker and easier way to do things.

Lol who decides what is the correct way to grind a knife? I freehand and jig grind both, jig is quicker and cleaner for simple straight bevels, gives the client a truly matching grind on both sides of their knife. For something like a convex grind on a chefs knife I will freehand it every time.
