I LOVE THAT GRINDER in the first 1 minutes! REminds me of something an Ancient Roman bladesmith might use. Keep sharing its good stuff!

I got 3 neck knives from Murray and he chose to put a deep hollow grind on all 3 and I am completely happy with them. They are so good that they are my prefered edge now.

Hi Murray. Appreciate your presentations. Very illustrating videos and very explicit, clean cut and eloquent narration. Though I am not even an amateur in the world of blades (just an admirer, small range collector and eager learner... of theory at least), I find great fascination in your videos; that said the videos serve their purpose, for all types of viewers. Enough said. Keep on. Cheers. George from Hellas.

Hey, would it be possible to request a closer shot at the blade while you're grinding it? I'd just be interested in seeing the hand and blade position relative to the wheel etc. Thanks!

Did you do a cutting/use comparison of these knives elsewhere? I cannot find it, or any discussion about the benefits of these different grinds for different uses? You've covered everything in your videos, I'm just assuming you have this covered somewhere? Thanks, Gus

We do not have a video about that topic, specifically. I recommend browsing some of the knife enthusiast forums - I am sure they have some.

Hi Murray, Endless discussion. But I've yet to see like compared with like - same steel, same knife profile, same blade thickness to remove these as variables. In the video, you are grinding post heat treat?
@CarterCutlery
@CarterCutlery 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, the grinding is being done post heat treat. You have to pay close attention to the temperature when grinding metal on a belt grinder.

I prefer the deep hollow grind because you have less metal contact of all knife grinds on the stone. Just the edge and the secondary border or spine area of the side depending on how high up the hollow goes. It's kind of like sharpening a straight razor and using the spine as a guide to set your primary edge geometry..

so do you forge in rough bevels, then heat treat, then take them to your belts?

Hi Murray, what is your opinion therefore on a flat/and, or sabre grind, with a convex bevel and edge? Thanks, Ben

can the grind of a knife be changed. I have a knife that I love but the grind of the knife its to low. is it possible to change the grind without damaging the temper of the knife?
@williammiller2307
@williammiller2307 7 жыл бұрын
Yes but there has to be enough meat on the blade to change it.

I prefer a deep hollow grind on my knives. Easiest to sharpen, just by laying it flat like a flat grind I can get the sharpest edge possible and if any chipping occurs during my intended use I can easily do a "micro convex" on the primary edge with a leather strop and compound. I think that the flat spots that occur and grow with each usage with this technique on the secondary edge add character. Eventually, after hundreds upon hundreds of sharpenings, you wind up with a thin, flat grind knife.

That's more of a Scandi grind. Originally Scandi knives were ground like that so there would be less metal to remove

@jedirifleman Interesting... I'll take any grind. I ultimately leave it up to the knifemaker, but if I have a choice I currently prefer flat.

Murray, is it common for Japanese blade smiths to use tools running away from them? You're the only person I've seen who's machines consistently run away. I'm wondering if it's just you, or a traditional philosophy, like western saws and planes versus Japanese. I'm thinking of switching my equipment to do the same, it just seems more natural and controllable that way.

I noticed same thing. my motor will go either way but did not install a switch when I built my grinder as I thought I would not use. I might rethink. I often turn my blades upside down when doing the final edge with a fine grit. I think it's a more forgiving way to sharpen.

I prefer hollow grind primary that smoothly transfer to wide convex edge that acts similar to scandi knives. Less friction easier to maintain.

'' Secondary edge'' did you mean the primary bevel? I hope I am very wrong, because you are teaching people what is primary and secondary bevel of a knife. Never seen convex on a knife, thought they are for axes. 1 Hollow grind 2 Flat grind 3 Scandi grind?
@MatoNupai
@MatoNupai 10 жыл бұрын
You forgot one. The Skandi/Scandi grind. That is much better grind than flat or hollow ground for a bushcraft or hunting knife. Convex is good too. I prefer the Skandi grind for a bushcraft knife.

utterly confused with saftey procedures.. Hearing protection in relatively low DB area: CHECK Breathing protection:CHECK Eye protection: WTF haha Not a safety nazi by any means but a little odd I find shit flying all over the place on my belt grinder. Safety squints work pretty good and i can avoid most debris. haha Never even thought to wear hearing or breathing.. never seem to get anything in my throat or ear that prevents them from working... Very informative video thanks for taking the time to make these.

I do not lift the knife at all. Not a matchbook thickess or 1 penny or 2 pennies thickness like some advocate to get your angle. I use the knife itself flat on the stone to set the primary edge angle. Simplicity at its best.

Mind-blow: One side flat, other side concave inward... Or one side with an entirely hollow grind and the other side with a convex edge. Or a convex edge with a super wide secondary bevel as a hollow grind or flat. A hollow grind on a secondary edge of a primary convex & flat grind... Okay Imma shut-up. (INCEPTIONED)!
