🤔 so maybe I just make a few knife billets and take them to a machine shop for a true flat. Having flat stock seems to be the difference in quality. Honestly I don’t want to waste time on something that is half way. Forging and finishing I can do. Great info in this video, thanks for your effort on putting out great content!

Hey Walter love your videos, but can you explain how someone were to grind a Urasuki on japanese style single bevel knives without power tools. I've been thinking of working on a small project and this has been on my mind for quite a while now.

hello ive just started out making stock removal knifes using 1084 should i hand sand before or after heat treatment?
@hankatmaggies8819
@hankatmaggies8819 2 жыл бұрын
Most of times both, as long as youre not going full flat grind, for you still have that dime thick edge to grind down after HT. But in majority of knives where you'll have a flat on the sides, some initial sanding before HT must be done as thats gonna be hard to do on a hardened blade, then follow it up with the rest of the hand sand after HT to clean the scale. Hope it helps.

Is it as important to make sure that your grinder is level as well? Or is having a perfectly level grinder/grinding table not a big deal?

Can you please make a video using a circular saw blade to make a knife. It’s how I source metal to make my super rudimentary knives for friends and family. Would love to see what your thought process is.

Saw blades dont make good knives. They usually are very low carbon content.

I am really struggling with drill bits. What is your choice for bits for drilling through steel?
@shonaoneill5151
@shonaoneill5151 5 жыл бұрын
8% Cobalt bud, dewalt make some called "extreme". They are well priced for how good they are, they cut through very hard steels like D2, 154-CM no problem. But, if like me you have taken to knife making in a big way, then I suggest you bite the bullet and buy carbide, it lasts longer, cuts better, there is no substitute for carbide, and when you are milling your expensive pieces of steel. Especially when using the very expensive stuff like CPM-10CV, CPM-M4, CTS-XHP you definitely want to be using carbide. High initial outlay but the results speak for themselves. It really is that simple.

Joshua, are you using a hand drill, a drill press, or a milling machine......I should have asked you this first 😀

Where'd you get the long magnet you use to hold the piece while flattening on the flat platen? Every magnet I've tried thus far won't hold against the force of the belt and the piece ends up coming off the magnet.

@10:54 "Disc grinders are pretty cheap, and flattening is what they do..." @11:11 "...be aware that they [disc grinders] grind harder on the outside of the hweel than the inside..." => In other words, removing material with a disc grinder is relatively fast and cheap, but you will NEVER get a flat surface with this POS contraption!
@04gtno
@04gtno 5 жыл бұрын
It looks like if you have a very large disc grinder it can work. But I've been using a 5 and 6 in for flattening some rather large knives and it easily creates low spots in several areas
