As someone who taught high school spanish, I give you an A in intermediate spanish for NON Native speakers. Best way to learn a language is emerge in it. What you did to Hilary, I would do to my Anglo students. It is harder to teach spanish to hispanic students because they think they know the language and what they know is non formal regional spanish which is fine for communication, but in a formal situation they did not have the survival skills. You did a great job H .

This is one of my favorite videos of yours. I too am struggling with Spanish. One trick I have stumbled on is: DON'T speak quickly. If you do, you may be mistaken as someone who speaks and understands at a higher level than where you are really at. If I don't speak slow, half the time I don't understand the response. If I struggle and speak each word separately and slowly, enunciating each word carefully, the person I am talking to will likely respond in kind, or at least slow enough that I can make a good guess as to what they are saying.

Wow! Great video, because I can COMPLETELY empathize with Hillary. It’s overwhelming to me to actually speak Spanish with people. I work at it on Duolingo and I can read quite a bit. But so paralyzing to actually communicate with strangers, we get so stuck in our fear. Keep it up Girl!

Wow Hillary! You were amazing girl! I think you really underestimate yourself. I listen to you carefully and you have awesome pronunciation ( which is hard) you understand everything -you speak really well but for some reason you have an issue with feeling confident with your Spanish verbal skills. I couldn't help notice that Greg was helping you out here in there . I challenge you to re do this challenge but this time alone, on your own. You may be even better without the pressure of someone else watching you or the camera. You go girl ,you are awesome!!

Those who have not followed every video since the beginning as I have, may not realize how hard Goyo worked to learn Spanish the first year when Hilary worked 14-16 hour days as an accountant online. Greg was so faithful and worked each day all day at mastering blogging and learning Spanish. So he had a natural head start in that. I'm so proud of you Wera, I struggle to speak Spanish in public because I fear my conjugation or case is off and I sound stupid. It would be very hard to do on video. Blessings to you both and to all the pueblo, my beloved Puerto Vallarta.

Big success Güera! The most difficult part of "using" a foreign language to communicate with people you don't know is to accept that it is like jumping into a pool, you jump and and then you use the skills you have to get around and, be sure they are there, you know the words and what you want to accomplish. If you feel insecure or you think you sound funny, well... it is part of the process. The other person will help you to get what you are trying to achieve, body language is universal! The hardest challenge you have to show that you speak clear an fluently on a foreign language is.... get information trough a phone call! This is a super test because there is no personal contact and no body language available to use as a help tool. Give that challenge to Greg! That is a PhD. Level test. Now it is harder because of automatic switchboards and the person you finaly talk to is most of the times in a hurry... Nasty modern habit!

Secondly, I'm very surprised that you don't initiate as much conversation as you normally would if you were among English speakers. We're all proud of you for doing the challenge. Remember that people want to speak to you so try more challenges off camera and ask questions that you really want answered. You're going to turn into a chachalaca in short time.
