In general I'm pretty sure latinos get worse treatment for speaking Spanish in public. Most people won't treat you differently, and if they do, it's probably because it's exciting to find someone who speaks your language in a foreign country. At the very least you appreciate seeing people from developed countries learn your language, it's flattering to an extent.
@raskolnikov763 жыл бұрын
@@Saintwolvinn "Appreciate seeing people from developed countries learn your language", you said? Are you really that dumb? You are talking as if Spanish is some kind of obscure and insignificant dialect and not one of the most important, spoken and beautiful languages in the world. Spanish is a legitimate son of Latin, the language of the Roman Empire, the greatest empire in the history of humanity. Just to illustrate you about the importance of the Spanish language, the second book most read in the world, just below the bible, is "El Quijote", written in Spanish. A big part of the best literature in the history of humanity is written in Spanish, not to mention all the music and cultural expressions written as well in Spanish. Who cares if people from "developed" countries (that descend from barbarians and speak barbarian) learn or not Spanish? I certainly do not.

You’ll just tell them your black? You mean you’ll just tell them your American black. You can be Puerto Rican black, Cuban black, and Dominican black (especially Dominican, they’re mostly black). That I also don’t understand. Being Cuban, Puerto Rican or Dominican doesn’t automatically erase someone’s African black roots. Like when you see Black Dominicans go like « nah I’m ain’t Moreno, I’m Dominican ».
@stratos43654 жыл бұрын
sorry I didn't clarify on what I specifically say to them. I tell them I'm "afro americano" because I don't really like saying negro since there are people within latin america as well as Europe who are black/ Moreno too. Plus I feel like saying black is more of an american English thing. I usually only say black when I'm around people I know. Otherwise I'll say African American since I've come across people who only use that instead of black whether they're African American or not.

For us native speakers the shock comes because the reality is that it is extremely rare to see someone learn Spanish as a second language to the point where the can carry a conversation, much less with an accent. To be honest a lot of second generation speakers like myself can't even carry a completely Spanish conversation (no Spanglish).

well, there are lots of afrocaribbean and asian people in latinoamerica nowadays. There were a lot of movilization of the caribbean island to mainland during the beginning of the last century, so latinos are already acquainted with that kind of people, so it's not weird to listen them speaking spanish. (it's over 100 years, so...). During the same last century, lots of chinese people emigrated to latinoamerica too; in my country, a lot of them worked in the development and construction of the railway. Nowadays, there are a lot of china towns in latinoamerica, and a lot of things going on with the relationships between china and latinoamerica governments. (and yeap, that involves a lot more of chinese folks emigration to latinoamerica). on the other hand, there are a lot of Indian people, and people from SEA countries (example: Philippines) that looks alike the kind of latino who has native parents (Indigenous)

Whatever it takes to make small talk 😁 If that’s what makes them talking to me, I take it 😀 English is my fourth language, Spanish is slowly becoming my fifth language. I’ve been learning languages because when travelling, I like speaking with people in their own language. It really opens up their hearts and minds. I spent about a month on a roadtrip in Peru, and I could just tell how nicer people became when they realized I could speak their language. I saw and learned more about their country and its people than what I would have if I just spoke English. I even tried to learn Quechua (emphasis on “tried” 😁), just so I could speak with those who couldn’t speak Spanish or English. Never ever was someone rude to me for speaking in their language to them. The reaction was almost always a big smile on their face. Sometimes it was caused by me making a grammar mistake, sometimes by them not expecting me speaking their language, sometimes by their appreciation for me trying to speak their language. But it almost always was a big smile 😀 People don’t usually see that when a local language is English, because nowadays everyone kind of expects you speaking English. But go anywhere else in the world and speak their language, or let’s say, start speaking Mandarin to a Chinese person living/visiting an English speaking country, and you’ll get from them a big smile and an open heart and mind. I love that feeling!

Lol! Nice video. I get the same reactions. Where I'm from, where my parents are from and then when I say I learned Spanish on my own they often say "¡no, tú eres latino!" I spend a lot of time arguing with them. Since Hispanic/Latino are actually labels that relate to language/culture and geography (not race) I guess they are right in a way, lol! I adopted the language and culture. Moreover, the U.S. is the second largest Spanish-speaking country. My uncle married a woman from Mexico City when I was ten years old, so I have had Hispanic family for decades. I'm a Court Interpreter and I can always instantly tell when my clients speak Spanish as a second language. The ones who speak Spanish as a second language are usually from Mexico or Guatemala and speak an indigenous language. I'm just so used to accents that the minute they open their mouth I usually ask "¿Cuál es su primera lengua?" Today my client sounded as if Spanish was his second language and I asked what his first language was and he said "Mam." I get a lot of Guatemalans who speak "Mam" or "Kanjobal" as their first language, but they usually communicate fine in Spanish. I always like to ask what their first language is if I can tell they speak Spanish as a second language in case we need to get an interpreter in their native language. I've even had people who spoke Portuguese before. I was working at a Health Center and the scheduler assumed the patient spoke Spanish because of the last name. It ended up awesome though because I discovered the Portuguese language (Brazilian Portuguese) and then made Brazilian friends, learned the language and lived with Brazilian roommates for a few years here in the U.S. I love Brazilian Portuguese. It's an amazing language! Much more complicated than Spanish, but really interesting! Brazilian people are amazing too! Oops! I wrote a book. I get excited when I talk about foreign languages and culture. ¡Saludos desde el estado de Washington! P.D. Tengo un canal también, pero no he grabado muchos videos.

I've got kind of a unique situation because I kind of mix all the Spanish accents and sounds (I pronounce the LL and Y different ways, some times like a "J" and sometimes like a "SH", and sometimes I pronounce the Z like the Spaniards do) and mix accents and slang, so people always guess I'm from different places. I've people have guessed that I'm Colombian, Spanish, Cuban, Mexican, Argentinian, Brazilian, Chilean, Puerto Rican. And but then I tell them I'm from the US and it makes sense to them that my accent and sounds are mixed.

How do you make a difference between LL and Y in Spanish? They both sound the exact same! I'm from Spain and never heard of such differenciaton
@samuelhaney25604 жыл бұрын
@@elizabethreynoso4748 Honestly, its fun mixing accents and it helps me write (for example I never mix up my Z and S when writing in Spanish, something that I've seen natives do). Also, some people like hearing certain accents and I change and people often laugh of find it funny. Furthermore, some accents are easier to pronounces certain words/sounds ("ballena" for example is much easier for me to pronounce with the Argentinian "SH" LL sound, because we don't have that many vowels in a row. Also, it's just fun sometimes, just using different slang from different countries. I love saying things like "no manches tio!" or "chèvre" or "vale" or "coñazo" "que lo que" "ya tu sabes" and don't want to be limited to one accent/way of speaking . Lastly, it's just fun for me! So thank you for the suggestion, but I'm never going to limit myself to one way of speaking Spanish.

This was gold! 🤣😂💯 Born in philly but living in southern Cali it’s not as heavily Caribbean populated as Miami or New York (basically the entire east coast of you ask me lol) but when I go salsa/bachata/merengue 💃🏾dancing or go into a store where there’s Mexicans(who I personally find easier to talk to since my bf is half Mexican and Brazilian), once a small Spanish conversation starts they always think I’m either Afro-Puerto Rican or Afro-Cuban due to my appearance and because my accent they say sounds like that of a Caribbean Spanish speaker. ☝🏾I do however pronounce my S’s, Z’s, R’s, D’s etc,.... for now anyways lol. Especially since I’m still in my beginner/novice stage my focus is on being clearly understood first☝🏾. But once I have it down I’ll be able to really blend in a little better with the natives when I visit the Caribbean and those here in the states. ☺️😎💯 I don’t believe in perfection so in my case it’s “practice makes progress!” 👍🏾😁

I've gone through this before as well, where people initially think that i come from the Spanish speaking Caribbean when they hear me speak Spanish. Call it a hunch, but i think that the people of the Spanish Caribbean speak the way that they do due to the African influence on their respective cultures. Maybe the way we speak Spanish as African descendants (African Americans) is caused by a similar African influence on our culture which naturally manifests itself in the way we speak and express ourselves using the language Spanish.
@Word_Wise_Woman4 жыл бұрын
Ramzialzaki Weir you know what I think you’re right on the money with that because when I hear their speech compared to others not from the coast or the parts with heavy Afro Latin presence, even though I may not understand EVERYTHING they say I don’t feel that same connection deep in me when listening or speaking to someone who is from those areas and the Caribbean. The dialects are someone familiar by the rhythm and cadence of their Spanish which is why I study that Spanish more than the typical Spaniard Spanish taught in schools. I learned more from street Spanish than school Spanish lol 🤦🏾♀️ sounds crazy but it’s true and it’s definitely due to that African presence in their dialects.

Another situation at a bus station, I was conversing with a guy from Puerto Rico in Spanish. He asked where I was from and I told him I grew up here. He gave me a very suspicious look, like he didn't believe me and quickly walked away. Watching people's reactions when you converse in another language is interesting to say the least. So far I've had the most friendly, favorable, appreciative reactions from the people of Mexico. The warm, caring, respectful nature of los Mexicanos is truly an unforgettable positive experience. I'm a detective and I didn't know! When I meet someone who speaks Spanish I'll always ask them why they decided to learn Spanish. I love when non-hispanic people speaks spanish.

Hmmm there are millions of black Colombians, so you could be just another Colombian.

@@isbe8810 His accent isn't that good and there aren't as many black Colombians as you think. From what I seen it seems every 1 out of 10 are black. You think more of Belize, Suriname, Dominican republic and north Brazil when you think of afro Latinos.

I can't even differentiate between American dialects, and I'm an American and you're differentiating between a second learned language and their dialects .... I'm amazed.

OMG! Why is this so true though?!? You perfectly addressed this little occurance that I always made a mental note of, yet never thought to ask if this happens to anyone else too. I loved this! Oh, the first one especially, like they want to know where and why is the reason. I get those questions about my family, and also, I am asked if I have a spouse or partner that is a Spanish speaker. That one kind of annoys me, I wanted to learn for myself! Thanks for the great video.
