I decided to rent a car for my trip to Guatemala, ignoring the internet comments advising against driving in the capital. I decided to find out first-hand how the driving experience is for a foreigner. Here is the result

Be careful man. Don't get too confident. Always be super cautious. Especially in South America and Mexico. Your Spanish skills have saved you many times.

I’m from Atlanta where originally I thought traffic was terrible but seeing your experience in Guatemala gave me so much anxiety. My parents are from Guatemala so this video gave me a better idea how life is there. I’m so alleviated that you made to home.

@4:55 it was giving you the hint "turn right into 6a avenida pista izquierda", or "6th av left lane".. then on 22 st turn left towards 7th av, which goes straight to the palace. Driving here wasn't always like this. Before the traffic outgrew the capacity (many years ago) it was actually pretty easy to navigate the city. Now there's a bunch of quick "fixes" and new construction everywhere that make navigating very chaotic and stressful.

I am so sorry you had to go through, i used to live in Guatemala 12 years ago and was crazy already, now is even worse, the city is not designed for so many vehicles. The motorcycles make the experience even worse. Tip for those who are not used to drive in hell please use UBER is going to be less stressful

It was easy man. All you had to do is to take 4ta av or 2nd av if you were heading zona 1 to Palacio de la cultura.. What you could do is make a right on 24th st, make a right and take 4th av.. Tunnel vision is not helping you dude, come down, think clear. Nervous is for karens and Kevins, I hope you are not one. I can see you wanna make a barrio boy. Smart up

I have used both Waze and Google maps but find the verbal instructions Waze gives are very confusing. I did better with google maps though I was just giving the indications, not driving. Waze is suppose to tell you ahead of time when there is a speed bump. I have driven briefly but can see how you would be anxious, especially if it's the first time in the city and driving.

Anwser, its no easy to drive in Guatemala City for me as a resident. Specially in that zone in where almost all the streets has that disign with “two tracks”. Its horrible when you arr looking for ona direction and you end up on the wrong side LOL.

I believe it was Enterprise or one of the big companies like Budget. There’s an insurance fee (I think it’s called third party liability) that I believe is mandatory in Guatemala, but the websites don’t tell you that. So they quote you a lower price than what you’ll actually have to pay with the added cost of the insurance
