@AlonsoSC_x2 жыл бұрын
They don't really speak that slow. I think they did it to help Damon.
@kvsm872 жыл бұрын
I think they speak slowly because Spanish is not their mother tongue, they speak another language specifically, i think Damon or Miguel told in the video 🤙🏻
@AwesomeDough2 жыл бұрын
Half Guatemalan half Mexican here, Dad is full Guatemalan - they speak slowly and clear 99% of the time! I live in San Diego, CA where there’s a lot of Mexicans and most of my friends are Mexican. I remember first meeting their families years ago and being kind of shocked at how quickly everyone speaks and it took me a while to get used to because I was so used to listening to my Dad :)
@themeltedchocolate2 жыл бұрын
I realized that too. I'm like, 10 duolingo chapters type of Spanish speaker and I usually can't understand most of what people say but here and in the previous video I understood most of it.
@eljj79682 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is why it's a great place to study Spanish! Lovely clear accent. And of course, for many Guatemalans Spanish is also their second language so they do speak a bit more slowly.

This semester for my global tourism class, we had to read "A Small Place" by Jamaica Kincaid and she goes into both sides of the how tourists and locals view each other. Not only that, but also the history of how tourism started and the damage that it does but also the benefits that it can give the locals. Its a really good book and does get you the real thoughts from the locals.

Hey! Just wanted to say while I loved the last video, I loved this one more, because you showed what you cut from the last one, and not all of it was pretty. Seeing that Guatemala is a real place, with good and bad, scams and great experiences, and learning that you as an artist are choosing to portray a specific image of the area was really valuable. It actually made it more interesting to me actually. It's like when I moved to Porto, I heard it was all like "oh Porto is amazing, it's idyllic, etc etc", and I was actually really excited to find out that it's got waaaay to many wild cats, and a big problem with housing being bought and left empty by investors. It made the city feel more like an actual place, rather than a fantasy, and I think places and people are way more interesting with a bit of good and bad. Of course it's up to you, but I like seeing a few of the bad, boring, or challenging conversations. The messiness and contradictions of traveling appeal more to me than any specific viewpoint. I really liked the video :)

Damon! Send them a validation letter; if it's medical in the USA they have to respond with the specific information about how the debt was collected. If they don't respond with the proper docs in 30 days the debt is erased. If they do, you can negotate it down as the company who bought the debt did so for pennies on the dollar. Worth it, at the least it'll save you a few hundred bucks.

Damon, you have the best travel series on the internet imo. I believe that the lens (and languages!) through which you traverse the world is authentic, and you curating the clips that you would like to portray each location's message is an artistic choice that I respect. It's definitely not your job to present every side to the story anyways - leave that for the more academic documentaries, and others to go out and see for themselves. Keep doing you! I always look forward to catching up to your adventures.

I'm writing a paper at the moment for my masters that's around the idea of buen vivir or "good life" which is an indigenous idea about the way of life and rights of nature in that region, that's actually been constitutionalised by Ecuador and Bolivia in the 2000s. It super interesting concept and I feel like I'm getting some perspective about how that actually translates to everyday life from your vlogs. Thanks Damon!

Plus I'm gay and Guatemalan American (born in Guatemala with American parents; lived there my entire childhood until I was 17), and I got to say, I didn't realize how bad the homophobia was in Guatemala until I moved to Texas for university, and found it more accepting in Texas (out of all places). People just assume homosexuality doesn't exist over there. I'm always assumed I am straight.

Also Damon, I wouldn’t pay a bill for a date of service 5 years prior. It sounds like it’s already in bad debt collections so I would ask some questions: how many times did the hospital send you a notice of your patient responsibility? Did they send it to the correct address? When? And I’m not sure if you can negotiate a smaller due balance by the time it goes to a third party for bad debt collections but it’s worth asking.

But I still feel like culturally and technically it's the best place to be. Why are french people complaining all the time and so not easygoing ? Too much too deconstruct, too much of a sad story.
