Griot's Reverie

Griot's Reverie

Күн бұрын

This video provides a walk-thru of the Maxi 95 purchased for "The Trip", looking at the likes and dislikes, and strength and weaknesses of the design that have been uncovered over the last 18 months.
Does it seem that a good choice was made for a vessel to make Griot's Reverie happen? Hope so, because we are moving forward at a quickening pace.

It looks like a lot has happened to her over the years. For example, in the original the batteries are in the cockpit table. and there were two different main switches. But the boat is designed for Scandinavian conditions and a typical east coast boat. We often have a lot of wind here, so for other conditions she is under rigged. Furthermore, Pelle Petterson did here what he did best, designed well sailing boats with a lot of volume at such a low price that many could afford to buy. I myself have raced a lot with the Maxi 95 which often gathered a class of its own here in Scandinavia, we had a lot of fun then. Congratulations on your Maxi 95 which I hope will give you a lot of fun sailing and it will be fun to follow you. PS Pelle Petterson also designed the Volvo P 1800 (The Saint's car) 🇸🇪😀😄💕

Thank You for your insightful comment. This boat was owned by the same couple for the first 35 years of its existence, until the day I bought it. Either they made the changes, or, perhaps changes were made for the US market. Thanks Again!

Miss mine ... it's a wonderful boat for the size and took everything 10 years in the Caribbean could through at it.

If you have seen any of my more recent videos, you might know that my trip to the Caribbean on Sakina was ended by health issues, so, excuse me for being a bit envious of your 10 years on a Maxi there 8^). Congrats on that! You are correct, the design packs a lot of space and capability into a rather compact 9.5 meters. Thanks for watching and for your comment. Are you still sailing?

BTW, for MAXI entusiast.... If you join the MAXI-95 club they have a newspaper that is extremely valuable for all MAXI-95 owners (Name: MAXI 95 Bulletinen, nicknamed "Bullen"). At the time I was a member you could also buy them in a packet with the older ones included, it basically gave us a new boat after a few years. Starting from the must-do´s to the fancy-fixes. Althougt the text is in Swedish the drawings and photos are fantastic when people have documented their upgrades and how they have fixed things, how you find usable replacement parts etc....

The sustainable backstay does have a function: it loosens up thd front stay which will effect the form of the jib or genoa. It will add a lot of speed in light wind. Or the other way around: if the wind starts blowing, it is the first thing I put tension on. It works like an immediate first reef. I added this option to my Maxi 77 after discusssing the added value with my sailmaker. He was very sure about the value and he was right! I really like this option. I sail with hooked-on jibs, don't know how this will work with a rollerfurlex though.

Excellent informative video! I looked at this as there is a Maxi 95 for sale here in UK for not much money and it is seriously tempting me! My take on the adjustable back stay is that tensioning it will cause additional tension in the genoa foil thus flattening and depowering the sail. I agree that additional ventilation (especially in the head!) would be a good thing.

Congratulations, there is no better value for money boat in this class (And I have reallyy had a few myself and sailed on even more). You will have a great time. Be sure to join the MAXI95 club and Facebook forum etc.. Althought there are some limitations if you don´t read Swedish you will still get in touch with thoose who know everything about the boat. As i said in another posting you will find out that the advantage of owning a boat built in such a long series (+1600) is that everything than can go wrong in this boat has already happened to someone else, and you will find documented fixes (and spare parts) for everything. Also there are documented fixes for all comfort issues (new modern kitchen, ventilation, bluwater-sailing-upgrades, upgrades of electrical systems, upgrade of head, new windows, windscreen etc..etc..etc...

Hello. I have a question about maxi 100 ps. Is it a motorsailer? As in, does it really need the engine power even under sails?
@GriotsReverie
@GriotsReverie 3 жыл бұрын
From the pix I just looked at, the Maxi 100 PS looks like a 95 with a bowsprit. Given that the designer of Maxi boats was an Olympic sailor, I'm sure it will also sail well, but, I otherwise know nothing about the 100 PS.

any concerns on keel bolts or keel falling off? Would it be comfortable for ocean crossing?
@GriotsReverie
@GriotsReverie Жыл бұрын
No concern, as the ballast is molded in. It has sailed across the Atlantic from Scandinavia to the Caribbean, and has crossed from Scandinavia to the UK, Iceland, etc. But, small ship, BIG ocean.

@GriotsReverie
@GriotsReverie 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. On the height (going from memory as Sakina is 55 miles away), at the companionway ~6.25 ft (1.9M), just before the drop ~6.1 ft (1.85M), after the drop ~5.75 ft (1.75M), at the aft cabin companionway ~4.5ft (1.35M).

Amazing video! Did you install a shower on it or how you can do it please
@GriotsReverie
@GriotsReverie 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nice comment. Due to health issues that stopped the planned trip, I never dealt with the shower. The plan was to buy or make an attachment that fits over the faucet and hang a curtain to protect the wood, when needed. Of course in remote areas it would likely be a cockpit/deck job.
