I have been able to close the COC #2 for almost 2 years. I’m 53 years old but I am a drywall contractor so I use my hands every day. My oldest son can close the COC #3, but like you I have never met another older guy that can come close to closing the #2. I can rep the #2 like you twice.. I can’t click it 3 times yet. And I’m working on closing the COC #2.5. I’m very close. It’s a fun hobby! Loved your video!

My story with grippers is very similar, I’m 6’8 230lbs and have been getting into armwrestling recently so I bought that same set of heavy grippers first. When I closed them easily I looked into it more and found the CoC grippers and bought the 1 through 4. I managed to get the 2.5 closed as well and am working towards the 3. Been doing roofing/concrete work for the last 10 years (I’m 27) for reference.

Very good vid. I love hearing people talk about grippers. It’s funny you mention being unable to find someone to close them. Watching people online makes me feel very weak sometimes.

Enjoyed that. Been working on my CofC for about 3 weeks now and trying to find a routine that works for me (age 53 BTW). I can close the 2 now both hands so I am going to go to work on the 3. I have a 1,2,3&4. I use the 1 to just warm up a little and stretch everything off before going for it on the 2 and then have a couple of goes on the 3. I use chalk. I got the 4 just to feel what it was like, it’s mega.

Same age; could close the Coc2 also. One advice: I use for training both heavy grip and CoC; if you want to pass to CoC 3, you must work first CoC 2.5; but first you must to be able to close a heavy grip 250 (a new one is just in the middle between a CoC 2 and 2.5). I used new CoCs 0.5, 1, 2, 2.5 and HG 150, 200 and 250. Generally, the strenght level is like this (for new stuffs, since heavy grip will loose of his resistence if you use it hundreds of time - the material is not so god as in case of a CoC): HG 150 - CoC 0.5 (little stronger than previous) - CoC 1 - CoC 1.5 - HG 200 (little stronger than CoC 1.5) - CoC 2 - HG 250 - CoC 250. Now I can close a CoC 2 one-two times and felt only 5 mm to close a HG 250. I train 1 time per week (if not, in 2-3 months will get injury if I don't rest enough my forearm tendons and muscles - I use a "compet" training). Another thing: this kind of exercize is just for the grip; if you want to strenght the entire forearm and grip, you mustn’t focuse in achieve CoC 3, 3.5 etc, but to combine this exercise with others that strenhgt your … wrist; with just the grip exercises, your grip of a CoC 3 represent nothing compare / against (for those who paractice martial arts) a person with good wrist force. Practice hand grip make strong only your grip, but not your wrist. The same in case of preactising for the … health : combine them al middle level (ex for wrist and for grip).

@@krausmar-dy7bd Hello. Well a year has passed. Easily close the CoC 2 now for reps. Bought the CoC 2.5 and can close that. Can nearly close the CoC 3 with my left hand which is slightly stronger than my right. Did a grip test the other day and was 95kg left, 90kg right so pretty good. Agree on the wrist & forearm strength being different and required for training. I only do this for fun. Genetics and natural ability obviously help. Best of luck 💪

You are stronger than you look to be! I have all CoC except from #3,5. My next goal is to close #1,5 and will be satisfied if I ever close #2. Just a tip: lubricate the springs! You not only get rid of the annoying squeakiness but also get better training efficiency and protect the spring from rust and mechanical worn.

I ordered set of CofC all 10. Closed a 2. Closed barley 2.5 maybe a hair off. Never done before but iv climbed trees 25 yrs. I'm now 45

Thanks for the tips on training, i've bought my first COC 3days ago and its a #1.5 one, im about half an inch away on closing it, slowly progressing. But i've ordered a #0.5 and a #1 which will arrive in about a week or so so that i could squeeze out more reps and do more effective workouts. im sure in about 2weeks or so ill be able to close the #1.5.

Awesome feedback, Thank You! I agree. You’ll blow through the 1.5 pretty quick, and then it’s a lot of patience over a long period of time. Negative grip training is the ticket.

I've had my grippers for a year now bought them while being 19 I've met 6 people who can close my #2 and 2 others who have closed a #2.5 I've done 4 reps with my 2.5 and have closed a #3 with a set I'm working on training to get it verified so well see how long it takes but I agree while training the table style for grabbing the gripper will benefit working on verifying my the #3

Great grip strength video ! I've been into them for several years and have built up a huge collection of grippers over the years. I've managed to close the COC 2.5 3 or 4 times in my life when I could close the Coc 2 for less reps. Now I can close the coc 2 for a lot more reps but haven't been able to get that 2.5 closed in a while and it's frustrating ! Take care :)

Thank you. I’m about 1/8” from closing the 2.5. The 3 still seems like an impossible task, but I can close it with both hands and negative train, and in February I couldn’t close it with both hands. It’s definitely addictive. Have a great night!

There is a big difference between three different No. 2 CC grippers. We are three friends who compete against each other and the goal was to close No. 2, which we are now doing all three, but! When we met and took our CC 2 with us, we tried each other's and there was a very big difference in the resistance in my CC2 compared to the other two that the friends had. I clamped the others' two gripper CC 2 together without problem, but they didn't have a chance to get my gripper together! We're going to put them in a vise and load them to see how many kg they differ. But my gripper has almost a cm left to close, so a very big difference between three different grippers.

I don’t give much thought to gripper differences. When a person gets into grip training, each gripper will have its time and place. If three different COC2 grippers have different pull weights, start light and work your way up. They all have their place and actual rating numbers are irrelevant except for competition maxing.

There is a lot of difference between individual grippers. He mentions his HG250 being easier than his CoC#2. This is rarely the case, on average the HG250 is at least 10% heavier, mine is brutal compared to my CoC#2.

Which grippers are you using? The Heavy Grips are quite a bit narrower than Captains of Crush.

I can look at the COC grips 100 times but I see no difference between the sides as shown in min 3:20.

When you get to closing high weights at high reps, you’ll notice the difference without having to look. The gripper will want to twist out of your hand, instead of into it. Look between the top of the grip and the first coil. One side will be slightly more straight.

I wanted a gripper and I was debating on what to get cause they are expensive to get in my country. I felt like my grip is stronger than average so I bought CoC #2. Within a month or two I was able to close it but I found it hard to progress so I caved and got a set of 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5. Now I have something for active recovery or endurance training, a gripper before the one I try to progress to and one heavier when I feel like I'm ready. I stopped for a few months and now I kinda struggle to close #2 these days. I'm gonna start training now and by the end of 2025 I hope to close the #2.5. As a side note: I dont work construction or plumbing or anything like that. I'm in uni and work a soldering job. Was about 20 or 21 when I got the #2.

I've seen a couple videos now that mention which side of the gripper to put towards our thumb. Why does it make a difference?

It creates a straighter pull into the palm and the curved side flexing creates more progression through the pull. My opinion.

I just started with gripping last week and got a 100 lbs gripper to start with ( Im 6"3, 180 lbs so pretty lean and 26 yrs old. I work as furniture/interiorbuilder). It is very easy. I can do 20 reps with no problem. After 20 reps I ofcourse start to feel it but that is because Im not used to this kind of training. Ill move up to 150 soon

If you can close it, it’s too light to start. Move up to a gripper you cannot close, then drop back one level. Good luck! 🍀👍🏼

@@matthijsvanemous7046 Look at both Heavy Grips and COC. Between the two, a person can get enough different grippers to fill in the gaps. They are cheap enough to where a person can pick up a good selection. You can’t have too many.

I tought i had a strong grip. But today i got my CoC 3. and 3.5 and hell, they break me. I have some 20 Euro Grips with 60Kg and 100Kg and they are nothing. They are good to get warm but the CoC are on another Level and i can't wait to get a better Grip and hopefully i will beat them. Thanks for your Video. You gave me all Informations that i need. You get that 2.5 in the books since this video dropped? I started doing gripper training in June of this year, now December and I'm hoping to close the 2.5 by the end of the month from about a 30mm set. Definitely have found the progress slowing down at this level. Grinding toward the 3 is going to take some time!

No, I’m still working on it. I got really sick back in May and it’s been a fight ever since. I passed a kidney stone a few months back, then had my gallbladder removed last week. Based on a reminder from another follower, I’m going to focus more on the negative grip training. I’ve been slacking on that key part of the process. I’ve also been working copper (heavy) Baoding balls for the past few months and while stamina is definitely increasing, overall strength is remaining static. It’ll come, but like you noticed, progress at this level is very slow.

Great video. Very informative. My mom has late stage Parkinson’s at only 67 and I still test her grip because it was always strong, even now. Strength training has been shown to be one of the best things for Parkinson’s, so keep up the good work! I can close the CoC 3 with a deep set but recently started using the no set technique and am getting close to the 2.5 but it’s very hard without long fingers. Just subscribed, so I’m excited to see future videos 👍🏻

Grippers are optimised for right hands. Ironmind make left-hand versions but they dont come in .5 increments. I just got the number 2 in the post this week and I closed it no problem with my right. With my left though, I needed about 3mm to close it. I'm pretty sure they are equal in strength because of the way gripper coils are positioned for right hands but I think i'll get the left-hand version of the #2 to make sure and train each hand equally. By the way, you should oil your coils. Thanks for the vid.

The IronMind Left Turn grippers are a solution looking for a problem. The standard grip trainers work fine in either hand.

Highly recommend COC and GHP grippers. Standard grippers from Cannon Powerworks are a newer gripper which I've also heard great things about Just with training, 3 things came to mind: - Don't neglect extensor training (spreading finger strength) - Good idea to give plenty of time for recovery. I find that once every 5-6 days is great for grippers personally - Highly recomend using chalk. Doesn't matter how strong you are, the grippers eventually keep slipping TNS is the hardest way to close them by far - very impressive

I'm 36 I worked with my hands. I've been in management the last 3 years. My hands would go numb while commuting 4 hours. I tried an adjustable 10kg to 40kg adjustable gripper instantly max'd out. After trying this I noticed I gained allot of strength and ordered an adjustable up to 265 lb $20 gripper. I can get good pulls at the max adjustment. I just ordered the coc no. 2.5 237lb it arrives in two days. I wonder how I'll do, btw no more numbness.

I was closing the 2.5 about once per week, but recently I’ve backslid a bit for some unknown reason. I’m sure it’ll come back strong soon. Might have been a bit of overtraining.

Started with the Bone Crushers. Got the 250 closed so figured I can get a 2.5 cc no problem...WRONG...some days I still can't get it....I also over train I think...I'm doing some kind of gripper daily. Sometimes it's the walmart one I do for a few hundred reps...some days I go heavy....It's amazing how much your hand strength can differ from day to day

@sissymarylen15741a Two points, Bone Crushers seem to be an even cheaper version of Heavy Grip, so they are probably even less consistent in their ratings than Heavy Grips, who are definitely less consistent than Captains of Crush and Ironmind admits that their grippers are not 100% identical for a given grade. Also, the 100, 150, 200 on HG does not represent 100 lbs, 150 lbs or 200 lbs; instead they are just a way of representing easier or harder resistance. I have no idea whether HG intended those numbers to have any relationship with an objective resistance. What I do know is that I have 3 HG 150s and they all provide very different resistance. So, the fact that the Bone Crusher is marked 250 has no relation to Captains of Crush using 2.5 as a designation for one of their grippers. The best thing is to get them rated - that is measured under load - then you know what you are actually working with. The second thing is that Russian Weightlifters used to measure their strength daily - using a dynamometer, I guess - because a significant change in grip strength could indicate whether or not they were over trained. I believe that a marked and unexpected improvement could be as significant as a marked drop, but I don't remember the details, sorry. Of course, it is more difficult if the event you are training is grip. But you could use your warm up sets to see how you feel. This is similar to Easy Strength training by Dan John and Pavel Tsatsouline - if a relatively easy weight feels heavier than usual, it might be time to back off or change something.

I have the COC3 and used to close it like it was a joke. I haven't seen it for a few years. I used to keep it with me in my truck and test people everywhere and only found one other guy that could get it within 3/4" of closing. Most people thought there was some trick or something because I would click the ends together several times them just grind them together. Afterwards I handed it to them and they barely budged it sometimes even with two hands. Lol. I need to find that thing again.

Less than 300 people out of 8 billion in the world have ever closed a COC3. Congratulations on being in a very small group. Only 2 people have closed a COC4. If the 3 was that easy, you should definitely try a 4. Again, you are one of the strongest people in the world.

People have been telling me I am strong my entire life and since I have never actually trained anything or gone to the gym I guess it is just genetics combined with growing up in my Grandfather's junk yard. Lol. I honestly never believed most of my friends that always claimed I hurt them and the famous "you don't know your own strength" line. But there was only one guy in school that could beat me in arm wrestling and on occasion I could beat him left handed. Lol. Definitely not claiming to be strong but the 3 was easy for me the last time I tried it and I do plan to search for it and try it out now after several years have passed. I will report back if I do. I am just a fat old country boy and I am happy with everything God gives me.

Wow i was surprised when you closed the HG250. I can close the Coc 2 using a deep set about 6-10 times depending on the day but I still cannot close my HG250 even once ;/

It’s probably more of a variance in manufacturing than anything else. With no set, I can close my COC 2 3-4 times, and the HG250 8-10 times.

The HG 250 is slightly easier than the COC 2. The HG 200 is about 165lbs, and I believe the COC 2 is 195. The HG 250 must be around 185 or so. I’d pick up an HG 200 and work it for reps. I could do about 25 reps on the 200 before I could close the 250. You can also file down the grips on the 200 to make it close further. If you want to build strength, negative grip train. Buy a gripper that requires two hands to close, and then hold it closed as long as possible with one hand. Repeat every 3-5 days. In between, keep working reps on the lighter gripper. Good luck!

@@slowedkingishere Yes, 20lbs from max is a huge difference. The higher a person goes, the more even a pound makes a difference. People will train for years to go from 300 to 350. It took me a few years of off and on training, combined with 4 months or so of dedicated effort to go from an HG200 to a COC2. It’s been another 6 months, and I’ve still not closed the COC2.5. It could be a few more months. Grip training is slow going.

@@slowedkingishere That is what I did. I’ve now ground down the inside of the bottom of the handles where they touch on my 200, so it closes further, and I went from 48 reps down to around 30. I’ve not max repped it yet, but it is much more difficult.

There's a video on KZbin by Larry Wheels where he's in a gym with some pretty strong looking bodybuilders. Several couldn't close a CoC #1 and only one closed a CoC #2.

There is a study floating around online where they tested I believe 700 people, and the average grip strength of adult males is 72lbs. Closing a COC2 is something to be proud of.

Few years ago I had a hard time finding a set of second hand grippers and came across HG 250/300/350 presumably because the previous owner saw no logical reason to keep them. I couldn’t close the 250 for a few months. Still cannot close the 350 and have only managed to truly close the 300 maybe a dozen times in 5 years. Depends on if you ate breakfast, how many times you worked out that week, your overall mood. Most people just don’t get why? I usually say it helps me to lift more but really we’re all just nuts. Have you tried nail bending?

I can barely close CC #1 unless I warm up with two three rounds of CC Trainer. But I haven't gotten up to your level yet I'm only closing 1.5 yet and have a little bit left on No. 2. But I've only been at it for two months and No. 2 I'll close by summer!

Good plan! I’m plateaued right now due to grappling classes. My grip is being used for grabbing and holding which is good for slow Twitch long fiber muscle, at the cost of fast Twitch and power. My grip stamina is improving, but at the cost of a little strength. It’ll take time for my body to adapt, but a COC 2.5 close is on the horizon.

Hi. Great video! I recomend you to try the GHP (Gillingham high preformance) grippers, american made, they have a little more aggressiv nurlings then CoC, and even 1-2mm wider . I think 4-7 would be great for you as are quite strong! Best wishes from Norway 💪 😊

In most cases it makes no difference, and many will say it doesn’t matter. Iron Mind doesn’t specify. Personally, I find that the anchor end of the gripper wants to kick out when the rounded side is the anchor, when using heavy weight grippers. It is more noticeable when fatigued. I believe the correct answer is it doesn’t matter. 🙏

I can close the 2 and 2.5 (sometimes) with my right. The best I can do with my left is the 1.5. Pretty big difference. I keep trying to close that gap but my left hand just doesn't want to catch up

@@ijrebuck I’m able to rep the COC 2, 3-4 times, but the 2.5 is still 1/8” from closing on my best attempts. When I started grappling again last year, it seriously put me back in grip strength. My grip stamina is phenomenal at this point, but overall grip strength is still not progressing. It’ll come in time.

Nice video. I've got two of the heavy grippers myself, the 150 and the 200lbs. Then I ordered another set of golden grippers from temu, starting at 250lbs. They are only slightly wider than the heavy grippers, and don't appear to be as wide as the CoC grippers. Haven't been able to close any of them so far. This is my first time hearing that CoC is more difficult to close than CoC, though I knew CoC was the golden standard and I was wondering how they compared. Good to know the 250lbs is roughly equivalent to CoC nr2. I think the CoC grippers are overpriced. The heavy grippers were maybe half the price of CoC, and the golden grippers were a total bargain for what is essentially the same product. Just order thicker coils!

Thank you. Part of my martial arts training is conditioning, and my palms are very tough. I’ve had no issues with chaffing, and I’m working the 250 and 300lb trainers regularly. I like the Heavy Grips best for palm conditioning, as their knurling is very aggressive.

@@AtHomeTacticalDefense there you go. The force required to close these is apparently measured at the center of the handles. However there's a website called cannon power works that measures the force by hanging weight at the ends of the handles. A coc 2.5 rates an average of 126 lbs while the hg 250 averages 115. But the numbers can vary up to +/- 15 lbs from one individual gripper to the next. Hence the averages. They will even rate your exact gripper for a small fee before sending it to you if you purchase from them.

I consider myself kinda weak so i got the COC S last week thinkg it would work my way up and it was way to easy. So same day i got it i ordered a COC T thinking it would be hard and that one was easy too. I got 3 sets of 10 reps touching the ends each close right out of the package. Im going to order a no. 1 & 2 in a week or or so. I pretty confident I will be able to close a 1 right out of the package. I based my choice off of captain of crush video demoing them saying strong guys start with the trainer, most guys that lift weights can't close a 1 ect. So i went 1 size up to the S thinking if I can't do it i would just get the easiest one and id have one to work up too.

Best cost saving gripper and the Best to make progress is the adjustable Robert baraban gripper, highly recommend you giving it a try and the resistance is consistent, with fixed grippers like the coc 2.0, 2.5 you have a huge Problem, they can be different resistance wise, i got a coc 3.0 which is even harder than my coc 3.5

the thing that people say be careful about is negative reps. its in fact can injure you. with negative you close the gripper any way you can until handles touch and then try to hold it with one hand. at that point the gripper just want to explode back the hardest. if youre not strong enough that can injure you. what can really help is holds. close the hardest gripper you can close with one hand and hold it closed as long as you can.

Thank you for another well thought out opinion. On the other side of the fence is the crowd that believes the human hand will open before any serious physical damage occurs, and this theory is tested millions of times per day all over the world, and there doesn’t appear to be a rash of hand explosions. Negative grip training is recommended by the top trainers, and personally I still can’t close a 2.5, but I can close a 400 with both hands and release it as fast as I can, and it just opens my hand. Yes, injuries happen. Like with everything martial, proceed at your own risk.

@@chrisdinke271 The CoC 2 is the certified standard at 195lbs. I’ve broken a number of medical grip dynamometers that only go to 200lbs. Gripper ratings are difficult to measure, but medical grade dynamometers are extremely accurate, and they support the CoC published ratings.

@@chrisdinke271 The very low ratings come from improper testing where a weight is hung on the end of a gripper handle. The problem with that method of testing is that the majority of a persons hand is not on the end of the gripper. The only true way to compare grippers is with a dynamometer.

Agreed. I can close a COC 2, and an HG250 about the same number of reps. Both the COC3 and HG300 are very close to the same, but since I can’t close either, it will be a while before I can tell how close.

The HG250 is a good intermediate between the HG200 and COC2. It is slightly easier than the COC, partially because the start width is narrower than the COC’s, and the knurling on the handles is a bit courser.

You’ll jump to the 200 pretty quick, and then it is a long grind to the 250. Consistent practice over time is the trick.

Good evening, 😊 last night I done my workout but I didn't finish on the last sets of my workout. Because my knuckle was a little bit sore rubbed it a bit. I miss 1 set of 15 reps doing shoulder press and 1 set of 7 reps doing biceps and 1 set of 8 reps doing chest. Because not finishing all the workout would that affect me making progress?

@garethdavis4806 I am interested as to why you were using such different rep ranges for these exercises? Do you find that your shoulders respond to higher reps or that your biceps are better with 7 reps? You might need to ask why you didn't finish: were the weights too heavy? Did you just get too tired? Did you run out of time? If you have lifted the same weights before and managed all the reps, then perhaps you are just too tired. It is not always necessary to go to failure and sometimes stopping before you fail is a good way to train because you remain fresh.

I have average sized hands. Not big by any means. I still can’t close a 2.5. I started grappling again and the long steady gripping is building endurance at the expense of strength. It also has my hands very sore a good part of the week. It’s going to take some time for my body to adjust and the muscle to start building again. It took me 3 years to close the 2, so I’m in no hurry.

I bought the CoC 1 as my first gripper, and for my right hand it was fine, but left, it was too hard for training. When I bring it around to friends/office/family most people struggle to close it. I think setting technique could help them for sure. I also bought a Robert Baraban Adjustable gripper, and I only use that for training. I can close it at 227.5lb (second spring at 4.5 level). So in theory I should be able to close a CoC 2.5, but I've experienced that lb rating on CoC seems more conservative, so i.e I doubt I could even close a CoC 2. I might buy a CoC 2 just to have it as a goal gripper. The Robert Baraban goes up to 500lb with both springs, no human can ever close it, so I have that gripper for the rest of my life :) At 500lb, I could move the gripper about 1 mm with both hands.

No, they are not even close. The HG250 is slightly easier than the COC2.

The problem is that most people are using these for one rep max crush. This is not the best way to train. I am 6'1 250 lbs and still bought the basic 60 lb trainer model and do 3 slow sets of up to 15 each set. Also, correct technique is to use upper pads of the fingers which then will limit what you can do. Thanks!

I started with the HG200 and worked it up to 48 straight reps. I’m up to 10 reps with the HG250. I can rep a COC2 5 times. I don’t believe I would gain any benefit from using a 60lb trainer. I’m 5’10” 174lbs. After I max, I then rep progressively lighter grippers until fatigue, or I’ll 2 hand crush the gripper I can’t close and negative train. Thank you for your input.

closing a coc#2 tns like you do is very hard. you grip strength is very high level. you should be able to close #2.5 if you use proper setting technique.

Evening Jon, I hope you had a lovely Christmas? I built my strength up to 200 pounds hand grippers but the last 7 months got stuck not got any stronger. I do the 200 pounds hand grippers every couple of days. When I do my workout on the 200 pounds hand grippers I do 5 minutes then stop for a rest for 2 minutes then I start again for a minute then start again doing the hand grippers tried to do 2 minutes thats my workout. Can you help me to get stronger hands please.

Keep at it. It took me 3 years to close a COC2, and after getting serious in grip training this past March, I’m almost closing a 2.5. To get stronger. Pick up the next higher grip weight, and negative grip train. Close the gripper with both hands, and then hold it shut as long as possible with one hand. Repeat. Do this once or twice per week depending upon how your grip is feeling. Add this to your current routine. Good luck.

Happy new year Jon, 🎈 thank you for replying back to me. I will try to do it how you told me how to do the grippers. One question when I train other body parts like my arms and shoulders they seem to get stronger quicker 💪 because the fingers are a smaller muscle is that why it takes longer to get stronger?

@@garethdavis4806 I can only guess, but I believe the hands are already at their peak of strength, because we use them all the time every day. They get plenty of exercise. It takes much longer to see improvement in muscles that are already at their peak.

Hi Jon, thank you for getting back to me. I notice sometimes when I am doing the hand grippers they feel harder to push them together then I am thinking I am over training feel like I got weaker. When I first started the hand grippers get that burn in my hands feel like I was having a good workout when I do them now don't get that burn in my hands anymore.

@w.harrison7277 clamps will work as long as they are metal - the plastic ones can break easily. Another trick is to get one of those cheap plastic adjustable grippers and use that on a low setting to pinch thumb and finger(s). More expensive - some grippers allow you to attach plates to the bottom of the handle to pinch with the thumb. Or you can buy (or build your own) Titan's Telegraph key - you will find it on youtube and train your thumb that way. By the way, the thick muscle at the base of your thumb/thumb-side of your palm does get worked if you train with torsion grippers, like the captains of crush or heavy grips. You can also buy frames with hooks in martial arts shops, which allow you to train "eagle claw" moves and they will train thumb flexion - as long as the springs are strong enough for you.

In 2015 I had a major injury that put me in physical therapy. One of the tests they did was grip strength and mine came out at 172lbs on both hands. The physical therapist had only see one or two people in 30 years in our area that pulled numbers that high. At that point I started gripper training. I’ve broken every digital grip measuring tool I’ve tried from Amazon, and I’m still about 1/8” from closing a COC 2.5. I’m told my grip strength is a product of genetics.

I started in 2016 after an accident. The physical therapist said I had the strongest grip he had tested in 30 years of practice. Overall strength, 8 years, I’ve increased my peak strength by only about 50 pounds. My age and Parkinson’s are now taking their toll, so I’m not sure my peak strength will ever increase. Stamina definitely is getting better. Any more, I just train to train. I live it. 🙏

Hi noticed that when I grip the grippers that it rest at the base of your thumb, you can actually still move thumb when gripper is closed. Meaning your only using your fingers to grip. If you use it upside down in your hand put one end on the first knuckle down on your thumb it brings your thumb into play aswell not just your fingers.

The further the gripper is set into the palm, the greater the leverage. The further out on the fingers, the leverage reduces exponentially. This is why setting the gripper gives higher readings. Personally, I don’t set the gripper as I am working on strength through the entire grip range for grappling, and max numbers is not my goal.

Hi I'm also working on a full grip from damage from a accident and exercise advised by physio but was amazed that the thumb isn't brought into play. I think maybe that's why physio get you squashing a ball full grip comes into play. Good video Thanks for replying Mick

Definitely agree! The build quality of COC is far superior to HG. HG doesn’t even get their grips even sometimes. My 250 is off by 1/8”.

@@AtHomeTacticalDefense I can still close the 250 more then 20 times even though I haven't trained for a couple of years but when I was training regularly a couple of years ago I could close them more then 40 times and I could also close the 350 for reps and the captains of crush number 3 for reps which is world class,. When I seen your video I thought I would get mine out the drawer lol

I would never jump to my max weight off the bat. If i do that my hand aches, and i cant do much more. I feel like if you cant do as much after you’re warmed up, you shouldn’t be doing more than that cold.

Each individual must know their own limitations, and you have found yours, so cool! There are some who believe warm up is a must, and another crowd who believes warm up is a waste of time. I believe both groups are right. Some people require a long warm up and slow cool down, while others can do a full sprint at their peak from a cold start, and immediately crash on a lounge chair with a cold beer. It’s the same as short stocky guys make great Sumo Wrestlers, but extremely poor sprinters. My advice is to always start any exercise routine under the care of a doctor, and work up slowly to learn limitations.

@@AtHomeTacticalDefense I agree with what you say, but even Pavel Tsatsouline - who generally advises against relying on warm ups (because there are situations where you don't have time to warm up or stretch) still suggests that ramping up may be necessary if you are going for a new PR or a 1 rep max. Gripper training tends to involve more work at the harder end of the spectrum, people working on closing their goal gripper or doing negatives and holds, etc, so it is more like really heavy weight lifting than daily training. Also, for people who use a set to help with a hard gripper, this is equivalent to doing heavy partials - this is why I agree with you that most gripper training should be full range, so that you are working (mostly) within your abilities. Nevertheless, while I used to do no warm ups when I followed Pavel's Power to the People routine and also did heavy PR singles without warm ups, following a modified version of Steve Justa's Singles routine, I still warm up my hands with lighter grippers. With the weight training, I never had any injuries or problems, but with grip, my hands can ache. I often use contrast baths - cold and hot and cold - to relieve pain. If I warm up, this is eliminated or massively reduced.

@@charleshayes2528 I have no issues maxing every 3 days or so, and I have found over the past 8 years that any warmup reduces my max closing weight. Again, I believe genetics plays a role. Research fast vs slow twitch muscle. People are different.

@@monkoko6441 You are welcome! It sounds like you are on track. I’m on a major plateau right now. I’m grappling quite a bit, and it’s seriously hurting my grip max. My endurance and strength at a fully closed fist is improving, but my max hasn’t moved since October. It’ll come in time.

I'm exactly where you are. I did close the 2.5 but I used my other hand to set it right and already had it 75% closed. I can close a 2 3 times without that.

@@miguelelanimal146 The HG300 that I have is between the 2.5 and 3.0. The other thing you can do is file a little off the inside of the grip so the 2.5 closes a little further. It makes a major difference. Good luck!

I’ve been stuck at about 1/8” from close on a COC 2.5 for about a year. Stamina is improving, but improving peak power is proving to be elusive at the moment.

I do not regularly train pinch grip, but dabble when the opportunity arises. I started grappling again, and my grip is going through some major changes at the moment. I’ve lost a bit of overall strength, but my endurance is getting significantly better. It’ll take some time for my fast twitch muscle to catch up, but in the meantime I’m good where I’m at. In time, it’ll come.

That is great! It took me 3-4 years starting with a Heavy Grips 200 before I could close the COC 2. I’ve been at it another year and a half and I still can’t close the COC 2.5. Once a person reaches their max, it takes a lot of time and work to improve. I’m fighting old age and Parkinson’s, but I don’t let excuses slow me down. I personally find that the heavier weight grippers want to twist out of the palm with the curved side to the thumb, and that is why I always place the straight side to the thumb. With some grippers, the difference is quite noticeable nearing the end of a session.
