During the War game dubbed "Falcon Strike 2015", Chinese J-11 (Su-27) and Thai Gripen C went head-on for a week. At the opening of the exercise, the Flankers did well in close range engagements (for at least two days). Mainly relying on IRST and PL-8s; but the glory was short lived, when the fight went from short to long range. The Gripens won from that point on until the end of the War Game. Note: To sum up; Excellent training is key for victory along with good sensors.

The AOA Limiter once again proving that it's there for a good reason. The Cobra is simply a maneuver without much use. You either do it perfectly and at the perfect moment, or you're dead/bailed out. And that's just for gunfights. In Fox-2 fights it's even riskier.

This is awesome seeing the fight from both povs. It really is just a completely different experience. Not often to get both so viscerally. Flying fighter jets is a very 'in your head' experience and usually very personal. So bringing us along for the ride means a lot. :)

Something that is lost in these flight simulators is the electronic warfare capability in a group of Gripen planes. A group of Gripens can network with each other and share radar and tactical data in a way that few other aircraft can do, which can give them a whole other lever of combat awareness than just one-on-one dogfigt ever can show.

Brutally even more weak. The current shape of the F404 convergent-divergent nozzle on the Gripen is key to eeking out energy retention since its T/W is less than 1:1. A TVC nozzle would significantly mess with the center of balance of the airframe and add several hundred pounds, while also making arctic operation much more difficult to do. Notice how Russia pulled the TVC nozzles from the MiG-35, making it an option for FMS customers. Multi-axis TVC is heavy and complicated, with significant challenges for operation in extreme cold. The Gripen can’t afford another weight penalty on it.

If only the Jas-39 Gripen, which is an older version of the aircraft, is already capable of shooting down a fighter as powerful as the Su-27, imagine only the Gripen-NG that Brazil bought, it will be much much much more better than the Jas-39 Gripen, the main advantage of the Gripen-NG and seeing and attacking the fighters from a long distance like the F-35, in the dogfight despite being well prepared I think the pilot would not risk it without there being so much need, I think the Brazil made a good choice since the Gripen is cheaper to operate than the other fighters. Gripen is pretty great. But keep in mind the SU-27 from the video is form 1977 and the Gripen NG from 2018. It would be far more reasonable to compare it to the SU-35 from 2007.

@@greybuckleton He made a video last week in which Gripen beat the Su-35 4-1. I just don't know if that can happen in the real world. But if the game data is true Gripen even with a single engine beats the Su-35 which has two engines and thrust vectoring

LongShot You have to leave the line of fire at the last moment, when approaching, and cut the corner so that the enemy does not shoot aimingly along the predictable trajectory of your movement, but you did not do this and was punished for it. Train better and hard, only with practice will you understand.

At the exercise you mention in 2015, the J-11 (SU-27) the Thai Gripen got kicked handsomely in the WVR but Gripen kicked ass in the BVR. The SU-27 should have advantage at higher altitude. From the Chinese debrief it sounded like they need mire BVR training, I suppose the Thai pilots can use some more WVR hours. But if you deny an opponent to get WVR... I suppose BVR is a better investment.

It kinda amazes me that as a whole, Europe has all the combat airplanes that are really needed(there are specialised roles that another type would be better suited for) for it's own Air Force, completely independent from companies outside of Europe... The "class" means similar performance characteristics and mission parameters, not size: F-16C class Light Fighter - Gripen E F-18C class Multirole Fighter - Gripen E F-15C class Interceptor/AS Fighter - Typhoon F-18E/F class Multirole and Carrier Fighter - Rafale Air-Ground armament focused Strike Fighter - Rafale, Typhoon AND Gripen E Forward Air Controller - Gripen E again Nuclear delivery system, ECM and Anti-Radar Strike Fighter - Tornado... currently being replaced by modified Typhoons in Germany Now that's a primarily defensive setup(despite the Nuclear delivery system... that's a NATO obligation)... the more offensive ones are in the design pipeline right now. As said, it amazes me... and confuses me as well. I don't get why any European Country with the exception of the UK would feel the need to buy any other than these three aircraft. They can fulfill any role with the exception of VTOL and High Altitude Bomber. Especially the Gripen is an absolute bargain for the capabilities it brings to the table(or battlefield). By all accounts it should have replaced most of the European Countries F-16's and F-18's years ago. But then there was the Joint Strike Fighter program... the F-35 Lightning II. Now, I'm not going to take a dump on Fat Amy(already it's nickname ^^), I do believe that it's capabilities are very advanced especially in the Multirole and Strike Fighter role. And of course, the UK has only VTOL Carriers, so they hadn't much choice. The whole controversy around it had to do with cost overruns, Military-Industrial Complex politics and other, non-aircraft specific factors. But Donald Trump gave Europe as a whole a taste of what it would be like if the US suddenly became a non-reliable supplier, like Russia... so why do we *STILL* rely on non-European military aircraft suppliers, like during 20th Century 60ties or 70ties? I just don't get it.

Ever tried useing the stick deflection limiter override? Its not toggle-on like Cobra and it does not disable stability assist, but lets you still pull large AoA, not as much as the Cobra button, but allmost and is, i find, more usefull.

Use the cobra manoeuvre only if you have R-73 archer or equivalent missiles in a fox-2 dogfight. Not in a guns only dogfight.

Just read the Falcon Strike 2015 summary. Pretty obvious Gripen is underpowered from that summary, and just a rudimentary reading of its numbers. I've made the same criticisms on Gripen's Wiki page. Thrust:Weight, range, ect are with 3 drops of fuel and stripped clean. F414 isn't going to fix that.

The speaker was reported to be Li Zhonghua who is said to have participated in Exercise Falcon Strike 2015 in Thailand. One of the slides showed the score during each day of the exercise and during the first day, the Thais flying the Gripen were beaten 16-0.

irl Thai Gripens lost every single dogfight with Chinese Su-27Sk in exercise. Tho they did good in BVR.

The problem was not in the plane but in the old AIM-9 Sidewinder robots that Thailand uses. They did not manage to lock on to the targets because they have a track rate of about 16 degrees / sec, which is far too little when flying in close dogfight. Then Thailand also lacked a helmet sight, which is a prerequisite for if you want to send the robot in some direction to chase the target. No cannons were used in these exercises

In Falcon Strike exercises between RTAF and PLAAF, Gripen hurt the older Su-27 in BVR 41:9 exchange ratio. In visual range, Su-27 wrecked the Gripen, but the RTAF was not allowed by MBDA to use the IRIS-T Helmet-HOBS missiles. US let RTAF use CATM-120C but wouldn’t allow them to use F-16A ADF and OCU aircraft with all the upgraded expansions for A2A/AIM-120 interface. The PLAAF pilots came down in advance to fly exchange in RTAF Gripen Ds, while RTAF pilots went up to China to fly Su-27UBK. They had to work out how to instrument the Su-27 for RVV-AE simulation to validate missile shots. Chinese said the RVV-AE has roughly a 50km WEZ, which put them at a major disadvantage to the Gripen C with AIM-120C and its 80km+ WEZ. They attended the next year in J-10s with longer reach Chinese-built BVRAAMs, AESA radars, better data links, and took away any advantage the Gripen had prior. Especially when they brought J-10C with the DSI inlet, multi data link, and PL-15 missile, it made the Gripen not very survivable in either BVR or WVR/H-HOBS range. China then did an internal tactical exploitation study of J-10C vs Su-35K, and found that the J-10C smokes the Su-35K in BVR and matches it in WVR. They launched an upgrade initiative to put AESAs in all their older Flankers, since the Su-35 has avionics that are more integrated to where modifications bricks the whole aircraft, requiring technicians from Sukhoi to come fix for them after they tried installing their own superior avionics in them.
