This guy is one of the BEST instructors- he is so clear concise easy to follow. It’s criminal how underrated he is.

There aren't enough grip fighting technique videos out there. Almost more important than learning take downs for bjj practitioners is the grip fighting when cross training judo.

Excellent details brother! I've been working with my resident Judoka, a brown belt from San Jose State, at my gym on some new grip strategies for the 2022 season🤙 Can't wait to try them out this weekend at the Atlanta Open.

Professor, do you have a video where the opponent grabs the other side of the collar while you have your post on his? Thanks!

Is there any chance you can post a video on establishing that first contact? This video is awesome for maintaining the dominant lapel grip, but what are some ways you make sure you come out ahead and establish your grip first? Especially with my opponent’s wrestling in mind (and my hands lowering a bit to keep defensive stance), sometimes this is tricky for me. Great content like always.

I was about to write almost the same. In addition, can you post a follow up video about the sleeve grip ? On another "registrr" I tend to favour the cross collar grip; any similar tips about grip fighting that way? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

That’s a great question. I’ll post some videos on establishing the first trip soon!

Gi or nogi, my first grip sequence is go for their weapons, AKA their wrists. I will establish a wrist or sleeve control before I grab the lapel, or in my case over the back. With two-hand grip breaks now illegal in judo it is very important to prevent the opponent from establishing a grip to begin with. I learned some gripping entries from a training partner that spent some time with Jimmy Pedro Jr. It's a great way to get your grips and then use the above techniques to keep your dominant grips.
