3 ideas, not necessarily original (found from other comments) Grip on both shoes and board Grip on shoes, rubber on board Velcro on shoes and board. Velcro could wrap around shoes (like with velcro straps) instead of sticking just on the bottom to avoid them coming off like the grip tape did.

Grip tape grips to rubber, not wood. lol That's why there's the sticker side for the deck and the grip side for your shoes. Rubber grips better on slick wood, but dirt and dust lessens that grip, hence the need for grip tape.

Wood, being porous, can be gripped with grip tape, or sand paper basically. The friction is high between the two.

Uhh, have you not tried sanding wood? It doesn't grip very well. lol Try covering your tires in sandpaper and see what happens. lol The road is much more porous than a skateboard deck but it'll grip less because the asphalt doesn't get bitten into by the sandpaper as well as wood does. Sandpaper is kinda like lots of little teeth that bite into the surface. Softer wood would actually have better grip with sandpaper because the grit can bite into it better. What helps here is the high points of the sandpaper can push into the wood a little, which is how sandpaper works. It digs into the surface and scrapes it away. The reason why the sanding of the board makes it more and more slippery isn't actually because the board is getting more smooth, but because wood bits are clogging up the sandpaper, this is why they need to clean their grip tape for better grip every once in a while.
